how often does your toddler fall over?

DS is two in two weeks, he's been walking for around 11 months.

He falls over almost constantly.
He runs so fast, he goes face first lots. He also just randomly trips on nothing whilst walking about slowly indoors. Shoes or no shoes. Grass, pavement, carpet, wooden floor. No difference. Just constantly on the floor. At first I thought this was normal as he just learnt to walk, but a year on it shouldn't be this bad should it? He also walks into doors and door frames too..

He's seeing a paediatrician due to speech delay, lack of communication etc and when we first saw him around 15months old he asked me if he was clumsy, and I said yes, but he's only just learnt to walk in last few months. As its no better I'm assuming it is a sign of something? Originally we were thinking autism due to lots of things, but then verbal dyspraxia looked like it could fit, and I wonder what the clumsiness could be, if it's anything...

How often do your toddlers fall over? Those that have been walking for around a year?

My DD is almost three and is constantly falling over where she just runs about and jumps. She's also just clumsy and doesn't really think.

Mine is 2.3 and falls a lot, especially when running (usually because not looking where he is going).

Also an early walker (10m), so I don't think that has anything to do with it.

I'm not worried.

Dyspraxia can be a general condition affecting co ordination of all the muscles or just the oral motor muscles and it does sound like he may be a bit more clumsy than is typical. However, he could just be a bit out of sync. Perhaps he is stronger and braver than he is co-ordinated at the moment but the balance may shift as he gets older. My DS who has been walking 6 months only falls a couple of times a day but he is relatively cautious.

  • also does he like falling? If he has sensory processing issues (just a guess with you suggestion he has some ASD traits) he might like the feeling of falling or at least not avoid it as much as others.

if it were just tripping/falling I wouldn't be worried, some people are more clumsy than others and if you concentrate on other things it's easy to trip.
but def mention this when you have your appointment.

My 2.8yr old DD trips and falls all the time, at least once a day usually more. She's always covered in bruises and red marks. I sometimes worry about it but I think mostly she is just clumsy / does everything at a million miles an hour / runs while looking in the opposite direction!!
