How DO you go to the supermarket with a 4 wk old and 2 year old?

Trying to mentally visualise this, and it's just not working. Won't use the internet shops as the veg is always rubbish and sell by dates too soon. When I send DH out, he only buys the minimum. We have run out of nappies for eldest and I have hardly anything in the fridge - will need to shop tomorrow. Will I have to resort to valium?

Leave dh with the kids and go alone, or take the four month old in a sling but leave the 2 year old!!

I will have the same problem in a few weeksa
First I have to contend with the school run with a 6yr old, 22 month old and a newborn then I will have to shop with the youngest two, oh what fun, I think I need to start drinking in the mornings

Isn't going to be good. How about doing a BIG weekly shop by car at the weekend?

For tomorrow, I'd carry the baby in a sling or carrier of some type if you have one and put the toddler in the trolley bun or something to eat (something that obviously hasn't come from the supermarket). Then since you have the baby to lug as well, don't buy more than you really have to or take one of those trolley things to transport it home in. You'll have the baby on your chest or back, a toddler straining at one arm and the shopping in the other though.

Enjoy.... this phase will pass so quickly!

Trolley with 1 baby seat and 1 toddler seat and lots of snacks for the 2 year old. Or keep baby in the car seat and place it inside the trolley (if the 2 year old is likely to hit/poke/generally irritate the baby - my 2 year old said to me in Tesco "Mummy, Dominic has just eaten a raisin" when Dominic was FAR too young for such things...)

and buy veg seperately, i get mine online from tesco, veg has always been ok

it is either hell or fine depending on whether the baby sleeps through it or not!

Recommend sling for baby and secure 2 year old in trolley possibly with new small toy or food to keep busy with.

don't suppose you could do some of it online and only do the bits you aren't happy with online in the store?

I find it easist to order things like nappies and pasta and dried goods online, then getting veg and meat fresh is not a problem.

no, noones going to die BUT you end up with a headache, screaming baby and tantruming toddler and half the shopping missing that makes the rest of the day hardwork too and then you have to go and do it again cause tyou forgot, it's not life threatening sure but I am worrying a little I don't want to end up a shouty grumpy sore mummy just cause we need to eat

But if you gave DH a list, he'd have to get everything on it, wouldn't he?

Could you leave the 2 year old with a neighbour if you're just popping out quickly?

right what you do is. you drive there or get a taxi. put the baby in the baby seat, and the toddler in the child seat. do the shopping, pay for it. go back to car, load it all up, and go home.

WEll i do think some perspective is needed. There aren't starving two year olds all over the country so it IS possible.

oh course it i but it can be a horrid experience and if hs ehas a 4 week old then she may be feeling wobbly as it is
she is coming on here for some support not to be told she is whinging about nothing

i got 2 yr old dd out of buggy last week and put 6 month old son in it (carrying him in sling before) and it wasnt too bad. she had the odd tantrum when she wanted to go on one of them rides in morrisons and ds did not make a noise! just keep toddler distracted, get them to help out.
