I think that DS age 5.5 might need to see a speech therapist - should i speak to school or GP ?

I have been a bit concerned about my DS1's speech for a while - he mumbles and mutters and finds it hard to articulate what he wants to say, I'm now wondering whether to get him to see a speech and language therapist. It's sometimes difficult for me to understand him and when he meets new people I know they can't understand him some of the time either. DS2 (17 months younger) is far more clearly spoken... Does anyone know if this is something I should sort privately or should I refer to school or our GP? Thanks.

I would have a word with his class teacher in the first instance and ask her whether she can understand him. If not then make an appointment to see the school nurse - she can refer you to a speech therapist if necessary.

Go direct to the SALT in your area - do it now as there's a long wait! I went through my HV for DS2 (also 5.5) and she told me to speak to the SALT dept - they're all in the same clinic whereI am so it wasn't difficult You may end up going private due to the waiting list though.

You could ask the GP to check your DSs hearing - if he's mumbling it oould be something like glue ear. A friend's DS's speech was inistinct and he had hearing problems due to glue ear. Grommits sorted that out and his speech began to improve.
