When and how often did your baby roll over..

My daughter is 5 and a half months. She has only rolled over once. I left her on her changing mat while I took my eldest to the loo, came down and she was on her belly.

She hasn't done it since..

Should I be concerned?

None of my three rolled until way after crawling. DD1 was hilarious. If you sat her up she could crawl away. If you lay her on her back she was stranded like a turtle .

Do speak to your hv if you are worried. But it certainly can be utterly normal.

My DD did exactly the same at 5 months. Didn't do it again until close to 7 months, she's rolling constantly and sitting up/trying to crawl now (almost 8 months).

Back to front? She's six months old and she still hasn't done it once. She's only rolled front to back a few times too. She just doesn't seem to be that interested in moving.

When you lot were born the advice was to put you on your front to sleep. This was a boring position to many of you, and you made massive efforts to lift your heads and look round. This increased your upper-body strength at an earlier stage , and you quickly learnt to push up like tortoises. Many of you learnt to roll over earlier than many babies who've always been put on their back or side to sleep.
Advice has changed and that pattern has changed too. Your babies will still learn everything you did in their own time, but some of the milestone dates probably need adjusting.

DD1 at five months. DD2 is nearly eight months now and had done it maybe twice, just to prove she can, and nothing since. They're all different.

Ds1 rolled at 4 months front to back. DS2 is 5 months and not interested in rolling at all.

DD1 did it once at 4 months then never bothered again until she could crawl at 8 months.
DD2 did it at 4 months and still does it regularly at 6 months.

My DD rolled from back to front at about four months, but didn't master front to back until after she started crawling at 6 months....still takes her a few go's at 8 months, unless she's done it by accident!!

DD3 was 17 months!!! I know, lazy old bird! To be fair, she had physio because she wasnt showing any signs of even cruising at 12 months old. She bum shuffled everywhere, and eventually rolled and got her first tooth at 17 months. She finally walked at 22 months.

If you're worried, go see you health visitor. But don't worry unduly - granted if DD3 was my 1st baby, i'd probably have panicked, but she was my 3rd (and definitely enjoyed being the baby of the family - still does aged 4!), so experience told me not to worry too much.

She's completely fine with walking / running / rolling etc now Grin

DS rolled at 19w and then became a rolling machine Grin He rolled and rolled and rolled then shuffled his way around and rolled again to get to where he wanted. This meant he didn't crawl till 10.5m as he could roll to get anywhere. I miss his rolling!

Thank you for the replies. Puts my mind at rest.

My son (now 4) was early to roll and used to roll to get to where he wanted to be. But was late to sit up, crawl, stand and walk.

I guess they are all different and unique :)

DD1 not for ages can't remember but maybe 8 or 9 months. She was very late crawling and walking (is hypermobile) but is fine now and is 4 and a half. DD2 was rolling at 3 months and is a very active nearly 3 year old who walked at 12 months and is never still now! DS1 is 6 months and has only rolled twice. I am not at all concerned.

DS rolled at 3/12 months but that's ridiculously early. Make the most of it I have to deal with him rolling away mid nappy change...

All so different. My little one was on his front a lot when awake, and rolled over (accidentally) when he was 6 weeks old O.o I am aware this is very unusual though. He did it several times, but only when I turned my back on him! However - he is at just the same level of physical abilities as most other toddlers his age now (nearly 2), so I think it doesn't matter too much what age they are for these things :) Some are slow, some are fast, they will all catch up with each other soon enough!

Front to back may I add. Perhaps he had a heavy head that rolled him over, haha. Back to front was much later :)

Did it a few times at 5m, took a break then started in earnest at 6m.

My DS1 never rolled over. He didn't move at all until 16months old then stood up and walked all day. (Now 10yrs old and very sporty for county)

Please don't worry. My cousin didn't move off her num.until nearly 3yrs old as her older brothers did everything for her. They sent the older brothers away to grandparents for 2weeks in the end. Then she moved.

Can't remember with ds1. He didn't do anything til bottom shuffling at 11mo, then walked 17mo. DS2 is 6mo and not rolled yet, he is sitting with a teeny bit of support.

Can I suggest that you not leave a 5 month old unsupervised on a changing table in case they do pick that moment to start rolling over.
Having said that, my dd was crawling for 6 months before she started "rolling over."

GlowWine · 04/01/2016 20:54

Don't think DD ever really rolled over. Hated tummy time and never crawled either. Once she was sitting confidently and she could pull herself up to a sitting position she bum-shuffled (fast!) until nearly 2 years old (18m+ maybe) and then mastered walking in a matter of weeks.

Dc1 rolled over once at 5 months and never again.
Dc2 never rolled over.
Dc3 was born with ants in his pants and was rolling over at 8 weeks.
Dc4 is taking after the first two, ie lazy bugger :) (he's 4.5 months)
My first two dc were crawling by 9 months and walking by a year, dc3 aka captain disaster was crawling at 6 months and walking at 10 months, he's got more energy than the Duracell bunny!
