Legibly or illegibly???

DS started writing name at about 4 I think. Pretty illegibly. Is now five and it's much better.

Depends on the name, to some extent, IMO

I think a Tom might manage it before a Christopher and an Ann might manage it before an Anastasia!

Ds1 was 3
Ds2 is just about starting to do his and he is 4.1 but he needs help, he needs to be told how to do each letter. He seems to be completely ambidextrous which isn't helping as he doesn't get intensive practice with one hand iyswim.

Ds2 can do it really well tracing over dots - I'm talking about without tracing and just writing it on a blank piece of paper.

he can do the first half of his name, but then gets lost. if his name was Ben he would be able to do it, but it's an 8 letter name!

he is 3.8

Agreed Aardvark!

Ds1 has been writing his name for several months. Will be 4 next month. But his name is Noah. And he's been hothoused by dd!

Does it matter? Rather to my surprise my three and half year old can produce a scrawl which is 'her name' and looks vaguely like the letters - but she can't write, she can just reproduce the look of the letters. Looking back, her sister could do the same. Doesn't mean a thing. DD1 is now getting to grips with reading, at nearly six, and is quite good at it, but it's got nothing to do with her earlier efforts at 'writing her name'.

Readable between age 4-5yrs. ds could do it before then but just scribbles and if you showed it to anyone without the name i had written above for ds to copy no one would no what it said, they are too young to understand the writing of thier name before the age of 4, dd age 3 gets me to write things like mummy and daddy but has no understanding of it, she is just happy to be playing a game

Judging from the Xmas cards ds2 received from his classmates in Reception, some can write their own name and some can't

DS is four and four months and he can't do it yet.

DS1 learned sometime when he was 3, at nursery, but he was 4.5 before it was really legible and the letters were correctly formed. DS1 has a really easy 3-letter name.

DS2 similarly could do a spidery scrawl approximating to his name in foot-high letters before he turned 4, but it wasn't really legible till 4.5.

would depend partly on name; Archibald harder than Zak, iyswim. But anywhere between 3.5-6 depending on teacher (is it a priority to them?), how much they practise, when they're ready.

DS2's teacher agrees with me that kids (particularly boys)_ suddenly hit an age when the connection in the brain that allows them to do it is there, that age signifies nothing except the building of a neuron link- not intelligence or anything else.
