4 year old finger sucker

So I got a tip from reading all the posts on this subject - it was from a mom whose child sucked thier fingers (like mine) and he only stopped after he broke his arm and could not suck. Obviously I am not suggesting breaking a limb is a solution but I remebered this advice when my 4 year old burned her favoured fingers on the iron, whilst under close supervision I may add. Anyway she could not put them in her mouth initially when this happened as they were too burny so I put sudocrem on them and bought special Peppa plasters. I thought back to the mom who broke the habit with her son with the broken arm and thought that if I could just keep the plasters on during the day and night for a short period she might stop! Unbelievably it worked. The sudocream, as a deterrant was discovered really by accident and was put on each night at her request to help her fingers- wink, wink, nudge, nudge! She enjoyed the nightly routine and after about 4 or 5 weeks the habit was truely broken.
I think I can count on my one hand the number of times I have seen her fingers in her mouth since and believe me they were in there day and night.
I wanted to share this with you as a thnaks to the lady who posted the broken arm story. Its amazing what you can learn on mums net. PS I also have a two year old who sucks his thumb. I feel its too early to do anything with this habit as he does not have the same comprehension - so wish me luck with stopping this in the future!
