Ds12 'panic attacks' ... ?

My ds aged 12 has mentioned periods of time (few minutes) that he refers to as a panic attack. It's very new, in the last 2 weeks, and the first episode occurred on holiday when he had a bit of sun stroke and had a temperature. He woke me up saying he had difficulty breathing and everything was moving fast and voices were really loud. I thought this was purely down to him feeling under the weather and spent the night with him in his room. For the remainder of the holiday he mentioned similar episodes and said he'd been getting them every day but was able to control them by breathing deeply. I haven't made a big deal of it through fear of fuelling a fire that may not come to anything. On the other had, I don't want to ignore it and not support him. Has anyone had any experience of similar? Thanks!

I find it interesting and odd that he's actually referring to them as panic attacks--most kids who have panic attacks have them happen for quite some time before figuring out a name for them.

Can you find out from your DS how he knows this term? I wonder if another child he associates with has an anxiety disorder--these kinds of symptoms can be "catching" if a kid who already has anxious tendencies sees another child having these behaviors and receiving some kind of favorable attention for it.

I would get him checked out with a Dr as this is new, it might be worth them checking there isn't anything else going on.

Yes, I thought the labelling odd too ... I did ask him how he knew the term and he just said he'd heard of it and thought it counded similar ...? I've decided to pop him o our GP so they can check him over. thanks!

Hi, how did you get on at Drs? I have a DS aged 13 who also started getting possible panic attacks on holiday. He didn't know the word (he does have learning difficulties) but symptoms sound similar. I am taking him to GP on Friday. As you say I don't want to make too much of it but also don't want to ignore Confused
