DS (2.10) and sunscreen

DS hates having any kind of lotion or potion on his skin. I'm not entirely sure where it's come from, the very rare times we've had any skin ailments for him, I've only ever used a drop of almond oil and it's cured almost overnight. But the summer sunscreen battle is now in full swing. He completely loses the plot when he even sees the bottle. He is almost translucent he's so pale (white blond hair, bright blue eyes) so even though he's always in long trousers, long sleeve tshirt and a hat, his face and neck need sunscreen. If I do manage to wrestle some on him, he scrubs it off with whatever he can lay a hand on.

I've tried all.sorts of bribery and today had to send DD to the park with her nana while I kept him at home (I thought he'd back down when he saw them leave, but he cried and cried send still refused to let me put it on him Sad).

I am out of ideas and can't face a daily battle for the rest of whatever summer we get. Anyone have some miracle tricks I don't know??

I have no sage advice OP, on holiday last week I took to rugby tackling 2yo DD to the ground to put suncream on. She has a similar complexion too, and refuses to wear a hat Hmm

After a few days of rugby tackle it did get easier to get suncream on her but the screaming fit didn't subside.

I have a face sunscreen in the bathroom which goes on at teeth brushing time and then a nutrogena aerosol can one next to the front door which goes on feet and backs of necks etc. when we leave. I live in Australia though where it's probably more necessary. We only use sunscreen when it's really sunny. I rely on hats and clothes mostly.

Does he have a favorite video? I've downloaded Shaun the Sheep videos (7 minutes each) and he only gets to watch one while I'm putting the sun cream on. He screams I hit pause. Just find what he really really wants and bribe him.

The other thing that helped was letting him apply sunscreen to a doll. He got to tell the doll how important it was etc. It really did seem to help.

Coloured ones or a spray? If he is pale then he does need to learn to keep covered up, wear a hat and keep out of string sun anyway (speaking as a pale skinned Celt). I hope you don't live somewhere hot!

I hate the feeling of sunscreen too. I don't use moisturiser, lotion or foundation because I can't bear to have anything on my skin.

So now I use Nivea Sun Invisible Protection. I squirt it straight on (you're meant to squirt into your hand then rub on your face but I squirt my face too) and it feels as though it just evaporates within a minute or so. It's magic.

I sound like an advert Grin but for me the difference between wearing sunscreen and not is finding something I can bear to wear.

Have you tried solid stick ones and let him do it himself? Or those coloured sticks?

AliceAnn, that's a good idea about the doll, I'll try that. Mrshathaway, I had completely forgotten, but last year we used P20 which is a lot less gloopy, so that might be worth a try too.

Luckily we're in Ireland, but I'm a bit paranoid about the children getting burned! Thanks for the suggestions and sympathy Smile

We have a spray one which DD uses willingly now!

Wreched little beast...I brought him to nursery this morning and was apologising profusely to his teacher that I couldn't bear the stress of getting him slip-slap-slopped this morning. She looked at me like I was a loon and said he puts on his cream no problem for them! At least he'll be well covered for the rest of the week...

My DS has always been like that and the only sun cream he's ever tolerated is that Nivea invisible one.

Another vote for the Nivea Invisible - not greasy or gloopy at all. It sprays really easily from the bottle and just needs a quick rub over afterwards.
Even Dh uses it now and he was far worse than either of the kids were Grin

Glad you're feeling better about it.

Nivea invisible though. Since I started using it I don't think I've burned once - as opposed to at least one major scorch every season Blush

Just to update, I finally got around to getting new sunscreen at the weekend and got the boots invisible spray, spf 50. He not only sat still, but held out his arms and legs and lifted up his face for me to put it on! Not a tear or moan and the entire application took about 3 mins! Thank you, oh very wise MNers Flowers Flowers
