Dyspraxia - Please Help

Hello Mums
My 6yo ds has recently been diagnosed with Dyspraxia. I know that there is a wealth of reading and information which I am currently trawling through, however I have 2 questions.

  1. I know that intervention can be very effective particularly early on. Please can anyone who has successfully used a particular therapy or practice let me know.
  2. My son gets very angry and the smallest thing will trigger him off into a huge meltdown. Is this associated with Dyspraxia. I would not describe him an lacking in confidence or necessarily frustrated. For example what set him off this morning was his brother getting hold of a book that he was intending to pick up and read.

Thanks very much from a desperate and shell-shocked mum ;-)

My sister's dyspraxic. It can take a little adjusting too, but here's what helped for her growing up!

  1. She really excelled thanks to horse riding, alongside other activities to help develop her hand-eye coordination like throwing around bean bags etc. She's super smart, but struggled to translate that intelligence to paper, so instead my parents placed emphasis more on effort than achievement. Horse riding was also great from her starting it early on as it was a way of building skills and recognised achievement.

  1. The major thing we learnt with S as she grew up was that meltdowns were common when her expectation didn't match up to reality. So as much as possible, try to ensure things are predictable, and if things aren't going to match up, ensure there's something else for him to focus on instead.

It might feel like a battle, but you're not alone - and S is now a wonderfully balanced mum with her own beautiful daughter. :)

Hi, I think early intervention is really important as my DS2 aged 8 has been diagnosed with Dyspraxia. Support him, and try to find easier ways for him to resolve the difficulties. Does he get support from school? Before my son was diagnosed school had a completely different approach and he was very unhappy. Now the school are supporting him he is gaining a lot more confidence and learning so much better. My son also went through tantrum stages and still does although they have calmed down a lot, he also has other health issues but I did find supporting my child through his tantrums instead of ignoring him and mocking him helped him understand the situation better and prepared him for future situations. I found it really important for me to understand the condition so I could help my son develop.
There is lots of information on the dyspraxia foundation website. Hope the information helps and good luck.
