ok, my friend and i have a 17 month old each and i also look after another boy the same age. one seems to be so far advanced and getting comments because of it and the other seems so far behind and getting comments for it and the boy i look after is in the middle and such a good boy.

now we know everyone is different and so on. but our lifestyles are the same, we meet at least 3 times a week and go to the same groups and clubs etc it just amazes us the differnce between our 2.

so could you let me know when your child could master these things.

say first word

call parents by right name

call friends by right name ( or sound meaning it)

feed themselves all food with fork ( cut up)

drank from beaker

drank from straw

drank from glass

recognise and say simple object eg ball cat

know 10 animals and sounds eg cow mooooo

pull off all clothes and nearly put on clothes

say ta without prompting MOST of the time

can draw a scribble and tell you that it is meant to be something eg baaa sheep

make up their own signs for something eg hands turned in and down for yoghurt, smacking mouth with open palm for muzzy.

go up and down stairs on their own

count to 2 and know 1 and 2.

match colours eg picks out red ball, ask for another and gets a red ball again. ( obviously doesnt know they are red!!!)

can follow simple instructions like go and get this, or take that to x.

sorry its long. thanks in advance.

Ok - my dd is 19 months now

When did she:
say first word - can't remember exactly. 12 months maybe?

call parents by right name - Started reliably calling DH & me mummy & daddy in the last month

call friends by right name ( or sound meaning it) - hasn't done this yet

feed themselves all food with fork ( cut up) - since 12 months

drank from beaker - before 12 months

drank from straw - can't

drank from glass - can do it messily

recognise and say simple object eg ball cat - 16 months or so.

know 10 animals and sounds eg cow mooooo - in the last month

pull off all clothes and nearly put on clothes - fat chance

say ta without prompting MOST of the time - nope

can draw a scribble and tell you that it is meant to be something eg baaa sheep - did this yesterday

make up their own signs for something eg hands turned in and down for yoghurt, smacking mouth with open palm for muzzy. - around 16 months

go up and down stairs on their own - 12 months

count to 2 and know 1 and 2. - not yet

match colours eg picks out red ball, ask for another and gets a red ball again. ( obviously doesnt know they are red!!!) - not yet

can follow simple instructions like go and get this, or take that to x. - since 15 or 16 months I think

DD was very early to do anything physical and speech has been slower than average. She has a wee pal of similar age and there is a huge difference between the two. Dd ahead physically but the friend advanced in speech. It'll all come out in the wash.

Oh dear ... will be shown up for being bad mummy ... haven't noted all firsts down but I'll probably be able to remember. (DS is 18 mths)

say first word - 18 mths ( total of 4 words to date)

call parents by right name - 18 mths (not very reliably... but has refreed to us by name)

call friends by right name ( or sound meaning it) - not yet. Doesn't even say much beloved sister's or nanny's name yet

feed themselves all food with fork ( cut up) - not yet - can use fork and is quite motivated to eat it if it's something he loves (mango/papaya) but still mostly likes to have it spooned in ... even in preference to finger food

drank from beaker - can't remember ... before 12 mths

drank from straw - 17 mths

drank from glass - around 12 months but only if glass is held for him

recognise and say simple object eg ball cat Recognise a dog ... been growling at dogs across the road for ages (probably before 12 months) but saying a word ... only in last couple of weeks

know 10 animals and sounds eg cow mooooo - not yet

pull off all clothes and nearly put on clothes - not yet

say ta without prompting MOST of the time - not in vocab yet

can draw a scribble and tell you that it is meant to be something eg baaa sheep - not yet

make up their own signs for something eg hands turned in and down for yoghurt, smacking mouth with open palm for muzzy. Yes - has signs for milk, toothbrush, not here, - since app

go up and down stairs on their own - up 14 mths ... down, not yet but possibly because we never let him try and always carry him down our main stairs. He can negotiate 2 - 3 steps walking down no problem

count to 2 and know 1 and 2. - not yet

match colours eg picks out red ball, ask for another and gets a red ball again. ( obviously doesnt know they are red!!!) - not yet

can follow simple instructions like go and get this, or take that to x. - approx 12 months

Big variation between DS and DD. DS has been faster with anything physical ... crawling, walking, climbing (she didn't climb anything until she was at least 3! Never even occured to her!). She was more advanced in speaking. By 18 months she had heaps of words.

However DS understands everything - can follow instructions, make himslef understood non-verbally etc. His little friend was stringing words together by 18 months and now at 21 months is speaking in sentences, counts to 20, knows all the animals etc. He's either a child genius or there is a big range in "normal"! Only time will tell!

recognise and say simple object eg ball cat - 15 months

know 10 animals and sounds eg cow mooooo - not yet

dd2 is 17 months & is not as advanced as dd1 was at the same age.
1st word,dada at about 13 months
still doesn't always call us by right names
doesn't call friends by names
can drink from a beaker,a straw & a glass
can recognise lots of things,ie if you ask her where something is,she will fetch it,but doesn't say the words.
fed herself from 16 months
knows animals but not all the sounds-it all sounds like a mangled roar to me
can certainly take off clothes -from about 14 months, can only put hats, coats, shoes on though.
Doesn't say ta,but then again,I never say it as I don't like it.
draws scribbles but can't say what they are
has made signs for about 6 wks
has gone up & down staires alone from about 13 months
can't count or match colours but has been able to follow simple instructions from about 14 months.
HOPE THAT HELPS.

Hi
From your questions and the way you have phrased things I am assuming one of the boys can do all these things at 17 months. He sounds very advanced to me (I have done some work-related research on so called gifted kids). Now clearly a lot of people on here say why does that matter at his age/ let him be a child etc. I totally agree with the latter point but it does matter a little in that his parents or carers should keep an eye out to make sure he has toys that are appropriate for his capabilities and NOT his age so that he doesn't get bored.

Mirage - I am totally with you on the 'ta' thing.

For what it's worth my ds is 15 months and here are my recollections of when he has done things so far

first word - about 10 months

call parents by right name - about 13 months

call friends by right name ( or sound meaning it)
no
feed themselves all food with fork ( cut up)
most of it but not all - has a good go
drank from beaker - about 12 months

drank from straw - tries but can't yet

drank from glass - if I hold it

recognise and say simple object eg ball cat
about 13 months
know 10 animals and sounds eg cow mooooo
no
pull off all clothes and nearly put on clothes
can take most off (especially when you don't want him to,) can't put any on without help
say ta without prompting MOST of the time
no but see above!
can draw a scribble and tell you that it is meant to be something eg baaa sheep no

make up their own signs for something eg hands turned in and down for yoghurt, smacking mouth with open palm for muzzy.
no
go up and down stairs on their own
yes but crawling not walking
count to 2 and know 1 and 2.
no
match colours eg picks out red ball, ask for another and gets a red ball again. ( obviously doesnt know they are red!!!)
no
can follow simple instructions like go and get this, or take that to x.
yes from about 13.5 months

There is a good book called The Baby Development test by Dr Dorothy Einon which tells you more about what is normal at a particular age.
