Hello there, I am concerned about my third son who is now 11 months old.

At this age my other two sons were crawling and could stand and even cruise. Finlay does not seem to be able to use his legs properly. He does a kind of commando crawl where he pulls himself along using his arms. His legs do not seem to support his weight in the all fours position.

Looking back on photos and videos of the other two, I can see that they were keen to stand and yet Finlay never pulls himself up against furniture or tries to use his legs. He sits normally and rolls but there is no leg movement.

Has anyone else experienced this with their children? I am very concerned.

thanks

Allie.

I wouldn't be too concerned just yet. Some babies crawl, some do the commando you describe, I even knew a little boy who used to roll over and over on his side.
They're all different and he'll do it in his own time

My DD2 didn't move at all until she was 12 months. She did crawl then but didn't walk until 19 months. There is huge variation...if you hold him up on your lap will he brace his legs?

I was concerned about this too I have a 10 month old ds and it's only in the last couple of weeks that he crawls on his knees rather than commando he's only just started pulling himself up occasionally but doesn't cruise yet. At this age his sister could stand unaided and she only ever commando crawled as she walked before she could crawl properly iyswim. DD was really light though so I think it was easier for her to move her body whereas ds is alot heavier. They are all different and eleven months is still young to be concerned.

Hi allie - my third son is nearly 20 mths old and is now only starting to walk. He's a bottom shuffler and apparently it's not unusual for them to walk later so maybe it could be the same for commando crawlers? My ds could not weightbear until around 15 months and only recently began to pull himself up on furniture and cruise. Hope this reassures you.

my ds didn't crawl until he was 12 mths - he used to roll around to get to where he wanted. he didn't walk unaided until 19mths - he only started cruising at about 16-17mths. however when he did walk, he just got up and walked across the room! when he finally decided to crawl, again, he just crawled across the room - no warning, ie rocking on all 4s or anything. i just think that they'll eventually do it when they feel like it! (i think boys can be quite lazt sometimes?! ) just enjoy the lack of movement!!

oh yes - i meant to also add my ds was big, heavy and tall for his age, and i think this can make a difference. hes now the same as all his friends who started walking at 10mths!

Thanks for the advice. Am not worried so much by the lack of crawling, more by the lack of weight bearing as he will not brace his legs at all.

Have been to GP today who agrees it warrants a referral so will have to wait and see.

thanks everyone.
