HI

I have just joined

I have a 4 1/2 month old son who i am trying to start in solids - as he downs 10 ounces in about 8-10mins and is still looking for more - interstingly he is not very heavy and weighsin at the 25th centile.

Problem is he goes berserk every time i offer him solids -

  • to be honest he goes berserk if i try and burp him at any stage till his bottle is over and also just before all his milk feeds -

-as soon as i sit him on my lap for a feed he goes berserk till the bottle is in is mouth
  • he is on a routine and before i sit him down for the feed he is usually fine and smiling at me so i can't belieive he just suddenly gets soooo hungry!!- but once he is feeding postition he goes BERSERK
  • and he has to down his whole bottle before i can burp him - then if i offer him solids he goes balistic - is really demoralising - i spend ages pureeing and then wham - screaming and in the bin - trying to offer on my finger but no help

PLease tell me if this is commonplace ? does it get better - i relaly think he needs solids as he is so ravenous and is having a lot of milk.

I had to stop brestfeeding the little man as he was fussing so much on the breast - i stoppeed at 4 months. What is up with this little chap and food ????

all comments gratefully recieved

sounds like he needsan extra milk feed perhaps - def does not sound like he is ready for solids yet.

maybe a different feeding position would help? could he feed in a chair rather than on your lap perhaps?

What teat flow is your little one on? Maybe you could go for the next flow speed upward.. hence he would get his milk and not have to work so hard for it?

I'd personally leave it a bit longer before you give him solids, it sounds as though you're more worried than he is about getting them in to him. Please don't think I'm having a dig at you there, my DS2 was also on the 25th percentile and I had H.V's on my back about him being underweight, needing formula instead of breast milk. If he'd been my first baby I think I'd have gone insane. Thankfully he's my second, I ignored them, carried on feeding him his milk as he wanted it.
He is now 15 months and a real healthly cherub, with chubby bits in all the right places.

Please don't stress with feeding and food, keep giving him his bottles, and make sure he isn't thirsty, so he's not looking for extra milk to quench his thirst. Does he have a cup / bottle of water at intervals throughout the day? (Mine never drunk alot of water, but did enjoy it when they needed it.)

It will get better, for both of you, but only when you relax about his feeding!

Good Luck, we all know how hard it can be!

thnks for all replies

the little fella has a flow teat - size mudium - we are using NUK bottles as he refused anything but siloicone teats after his booby feeds.....
but i can't give him anything faster or he would down the whole bottle in 2 mins flat!!!

He hates water and also goes beserk if offered this -

NOTE WELL - he is usually otherwise delightful - and the beserk stuff only really occurs around feeding times!!!

He's still very little. Giving an extra feed is a good idea. Don't worry about the food, if he is a 'lighter weight' baby, the milk will fill him up much better than fruit and veggies.

As a btw, as my friends dd was very small, the hv recommended weaning as soon as possible - she spent the next 2 months struggling to get the baby to eat, baby lost much more weight, and my friend now deeply regrets weaning so early .
Good luck what ever you decide to do.

Have you tried him with solids about 1/2 hour after hes finished his bottle, just to get him used to the spoon. This helped my DS realise that it was food aswell.

Have you tried a "hungry baby" formula? It might fill him up more effectively. (Not sure whether it would help or hinder the weight gain though.)

well ....thanks chaps

my berserk little man took his baby rice this pm like a vacuum cleaner!!! downed his whole bottle in 6 1/2 minutes ( 10 ounces!!!) and promptly passed out!!

Will discuss with HV re hungry baby formula

And i think i will seperate the solids and milk completely and make inot diff issues

good to hear Pitchounette that my son is not the only little fella bonkers when he feeds - is really a sight to see - when i feed him in public people think i am strangling him or something!!!

I am a real foodie so i suppose he had inherited this from mummy!!
