How many naps do your 8/9 month olds have a day?

And what's the duration of each?

Just curious to know.

My 8.5 month old DD has 2 naps a day. About a month ago we dropped the afternoon one as it was starting to interfere with her being settled for her night time sleep.

Most days she has about 30 mins in the morning (approx 2 hours after waking from night time sleep), and an hour and a half/2 hours over lunchtime.

Over the past week and half however she has shown signs of maybe not needing the morning sleep anymore as she 'faffs' around for ages when you put her down, despite showing all the tired signs beforehand. Mostly she will eventually go to sleep but it might only be for 15/20 mins!

Today though she had an hour and a half at her morning sleep!!!!!! She's never done that before!! Had to keep checking on her ;)

And subsequently the lunchtime sleep has gone pear-shaped!

Any way, am just thinking that surely 1 sleep for a baby her age isn't enough? Am keen to know how it works for the rest of you.

07:00 – Wakes and Bottle
08:00 – Breakfast
09:00 – Nap for 60mins in cot with dog comforter, in sleeping bag Just put him in bed and leave him (always up for 10am)
11:00 – Lunch (this is apparently when babies should have lunch)
11:45 - Bottle
12:00 – Nap for as long as possible (1.5 – 2.5 Hours) in cot with dog comforter, in sleeping bag Just put him in bed and leave him
15:00 – Bottle (5oz)
16:00 – Yoghurt/Snack/Fruit
18:00 – Bottle
18:15/18:30 - bath and bed for 18:45 will settle on his own with dog comforter, in sleeping bag.

Now with solids and maturity he does sleep through, also no longer has 16:00 nap. Roughly 12 Months they drop morning nap but will keep lunchtime nap till about 2.5 / 3 Years Old.

The key to it is consistency & perseverance .... I was determined to crack it, took a week (DS now 8mths)

I was given this 7-7 routine by a maternity nurse Grin

Good Luck & hope it works for you.

Thanks. Sorry but is the 7-7 waking at 7am and bed by 7pm?

I was sort of doing the 2-3-4 routine (although the '4' bit is always longer.

My DD generally wakes around 6/6:30. Has a bottle at 6:30 (but at same time if she wakes later then that's fine).

She has 4 milk feeds at 4 hourly intervals and is now on 3 solid meals a day.

Yes waking at 7 am asleep by 7pm which I think is the routine you're talking about.

Do you know I have know idea why lunch is at 11am... I presuming it's because lunchtime nap starts at 12pm .....

DS normally has two naps a day of between 1 - 3 hrs each, however I know DD at this age only had one nap after lunch. They're so variable, DS seems to need a lot more sleep than DD ever did.

At that age (and till about 14 months I think) DD had two sleeps - short morning and long post lunch.

i would guess that you need it push the morning nap slightly later so she doesn't resist it. 2 hours from waking may be too early.

today may be a one off due to having a slight bug, heat, not having slept well last night...?

9 months, and the longer nap has always been in the morning. It's been getting later this week, so perhaps she's moving to one nap.

Up 6.30ish, milk
8 breakfast
9ish nap for about an hour and a half
Milk on waking, snack at 11ish
Lunch 1230/1ish
2.30ish nap for half an hour to an hour.
Snack around 4, tea 5, bath 6, asleep theoretically at 7 (ha).

Thanks everyone. I know they are all different but hearing your routines does reaffirm to me that she does need (and should be having) 2 day time sleeps.

I may push the morning one back half hour.

My DD is 8.5 months and only has one nap of an hour and 15 mins at around 12. She has never needed as much sleep as other babies. The only time I manage to get her to take a second nap is if she has been up earlier than usual and therefore has her first nap earlier than usual.

Two naps here. Can range from 45 minutes to two and a half hours. The longer ones seem to occur if he's been awake for ages before hand.
