hi i wonder if anyone can give me some advice? both my children have inherited my ears which stick out quite badly. as a child i was teased and struggled thro my teens to cope with my looks.rationally i know that beauty is only skin deep and it shouldnt matter what we look like but i worry for both my children as i want the best for them . my dp and i have discussed this and his attitude - which i always attribute to someone that hasnt got the problem - was "well they can hide them with their hair." i wondered if anyone else has gone thro this?my hv didnt want to know with either child and answered the same as my husband.

DS's ears stick out a bit, not helped by his having to wear hearing aids too. He's having a cochlear implant soon and maybe in a few years if/when it bothers him he can have a cosmetic op. It doesn't bother me but if it will him...He'll have enough to deal with with the implant, so if there is some easy way to help him, why not? Of course, he may just turn out to be a very mature & confident boy (so far he is confident). He's 6.

thanks cristina - its nice to hear from you.both my kids are in your face confident too and i dont want them to lose that. i know im seeing it from my experience - it may never bother both of them.ive read about splints but think both kids are too old (8 and 4).am also wary about anaesthetic.when does your ds have the implant?

Hi there.
My ears used to stick out -not the worst you've ever seen but enough for me to be a bit self-conscious of it as a child. I think I was probably about 8-10yrs old when it really bothered me as I had long hair that had to be tied up at school, which made my ears more noticable, and also I realised I could never have my hair cut short.

Anyway, Mum took me to the GP who made an NHS referral for surgery but somehow my name got "lost" on the list so I didn't actually get it done until I was 18!!

I'll be honest, it was very painful and uncomfortable afterwards (especially if I got knocked accidently) and I hid indoors with the bandages on for 2 (?) weeks. That was many years ago though so it may be easier now.

I'm glad I had it done but on reflection I wished I'd had it done sooner (but I've still never had short hair )

A friend's two boys got her ears - large and sticky out - they both had surgery, I think before secondary school
