'His weight will drop off when he gets walking....'

But it hasn't. DS is now 20 months and still chubby compared to mosy babies his age. He was 31lbs about 6 weeks ago and is very tall. He still has his fat belly and chubby wrists and legs.

He eats healthily and not huge portions at all. He has about 14oz whole fat cows' milk a day. He is also active and energetic and I take him to spft play, swimming, etc, at weekends.

Anyone else got a chunky monkey who is staying chunky?

Your chunky monkey sounds like my chunky monkey, Popsycal. My dd is 21 months and chubbier than most others her age. Think she is probably about 30lbs. She's very tall for her age too (dunno how, I'm not that tall, nor is her dad). She has pot belly, big thighs etc.

She also eats healthily but does have a good appetite - I give her the same amount cow's milk as you do your ds.

I'm not worrying - she's had chickenpox this week and I'm glad she's on the plump side as she now looks much thinner (they need their stores at times like that). Plus, my mum said the other day that I weighed 32lbs on my second birthday, so did my sister, and we are both skinnies now (well, when not pregnant I am!)

But I DO get annoyed if people say she is a "big girl" as I used to get called that as a child and HATED it.

Snap DD was a bruiser and continued to be so until about 2/2.5. Now all change she hasn't put on any weight in the last 10/12 months and has evened out at around 3 stone - but continued to get taller. Don't worry - like you I expected her to slim down as soon as she started walking and it just didn't happen. She only lost the last 'roll' on her thighs around Christmas time!!

Look on the bright side - her clothes have fitted for ages as I was having to buy larger sizes to get round her tummy but they were far too long and now they fit perfect!!!!

popsycal the best advice i can give you is enjoy it mines only 7 months and a bit on the chubby side my mum said i was the same up until i was 5 years old then she couldnt get enough food in me because i was running around to much just under 2 is very young to worry about his weight because he will burn that of in a blink when he's running around outside with his freinds
and dinny people used to say that about ds and i used to reply well people cat excuse me of starving him making a joke of it but at the same time telling them it was none of there buisness people say it now and ds gives them his toothy smile and i just laugh and say yeah he's going to be as big as daddy one day kids they grow up so fast

My friend's dd was a real brusier - weighed 3 stone at two years old. But from then on, she just grew upwards and stayed same weight. She's now 7 and weighs the same as then!

A "friend" of mine queried whether dd should be having full-fat milk to drink! Bloody cheek!

btw, nothing to do with this but my dd's doppelganger was on that Diane Ketaon film last night - the one about the businesswoman and baby. Was very excited (apart from dd muuuch more beauitius, naturally )

yes, Mummytojames, they still can't really run properly or walk long distances at two anyway. Well, dd can't. Just a bit.

my dd, 21 1/2 months was never chubby but since January she has become quite podgy. She has just started eating more. (not that healthiely either). She has always had a big appetite but has and is still very fussy with food. She is also very tall 92 cm which is the height of 2 3/4 old I'm told. Last week she was weighed and I nearly died. from 19/12 to 19/3 she had put on 5lbs!!, now weighing 33lbs. She is off the centile chart in every direction. I;m not worried about that though.I think she will have to become a little more active to help burn it off.

My chunky monkey has been walking for about 4 mths now and is still the same. He did lose a bit of weight when he was ill but otherwise he's still a chunky monkey. He is a bit of a pig though. He will eat anything and everything, doesn't even check what you've given him before putting it in his mouth.

My dd2 was also very chunky, and stayed that way until she had pneumonia just before her 2nd brithday. Now she is quite skinny.

Hi popsycal, I'd enjoy him, especially his good eating (drools slightly with jealousy ...). My dd's nearly 18 months and only weighs 20lbs but she's v. active, lively, bright etc. Some great new words emerging by the way! She's alway been a bit skinny but definitely got skinnier when she started walking.

But what I wanted to say was also a response to dinny, even though dd is clearly rather lean for her age I still get told all the time 'what a big girl she is!' It never ceases to amaze me. I think people just say it regardless.

Maybe people just mean kind of grown-upwhen they say it, Evita.

I always notice that children's size at this age seem to bear no relation to what their parents are like. The skinniest toddlers I know have rather plump mothers, quite often (no comment on anyone here!) And vice versa. Anyone else notice this?

Popsycal my ds was just like yours, always ate well and was quite chubby as a baby/toddler. I was worried for a while there because he also had a very stocky, muscular frame, and the bit of excess weight made him look even bigger. But I have to agree with dinny - ds is now approaching 4, and he's been the same weight for ages now. He has shot up in height and people comment how much he has slimmed down now. I think he was always going to be a big child though - he's now 21 kg (46 lb) and is 112 cm tall... according to my Christopher Green book, he's about the size of an average 6 year old!

Don't worry about it just yet, the real weight starts to come off when they are running, jumping & playing outdoors, which will come when your ds is a bit older. As long as his diet is ok and he's not over-eating, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

\agree, don't worry about it. I don't think they really start to shoot up and thin out until much later. My ds didn't until about 3 IIRC and he's perfectly normal weight etc now.

I should've also given the example of my brother who was a total little pudding as a baby. Really truly I don't think I've EVER seen such a chubby baby. By the time he was about 2.5 he shot up in height and was like a bean pole, you wouldn't believe it was the same child. Now he's 6,4" and weighs about 10.5 stone.

dinny, actually yes I do get told dd seems strangely 'mature' for her age. It's all an act for strangers of course. Soon as we're home she's rolling round gurgling like a 3 month old.

Forgot to mention that at ds's age, i was even fatter....
Fine now though! Thanks for all your posts...you all have confirmed what I thought in the first place - but it feels nice to be reassured.
Thanks again

Popsycal,

My dd is 21 months old and weighs 30lbs so similar to your ds. I wouldn't describe her as chubby though (like your ds she is tall for her age). Are you sure you are not exaggerating his 'chubbyness'. They mostly have pot bellies at this age - more to do with lack of muscle tone than flab!

Popsy ...
My DS was a chunky baby from birth ... and all the way until he was 3 years old ...
He is now nearly 4 and a half and he has stayed 3 stone for a year but has grown about 10cm in height in that time.
Although still solid he is by no means fat or chubby ...

well dd2 is 18months and around the 35lb mark. but she is also off the charts for her height, head circumfrance and her feet are big (6.5G). she has been wlakign since 10months old, everyone said her weight gain would slow down once she was walking, but so far it hasnt. the health visitor suggested keeping a food chart for a few weeks and seeing a dietician at her last weight check (b4 xmas i belive). i had to ask them to check her height as they were only going by her weight and the fact she has jumped more than 2 percentiles since birth. bear in mind that within the first week of being born she didnt lose weight like newborns do but gained instead.
people are always shocked when i say she is only 18months as most people think she is around 3yrs old because of her size. she wears age 3-4clothes.
