won't settle in bed

I wonder if anyone has any ideas for my ds, who is 4?

Basically, nobody and nothing can or will get him to settle at night. He fakes sleep, or just refuses to go to bed in the knowledge I have a bad back and can't haul him up. When he is in his room, he waits until he thinks i'm gone and then comes on down- ad infinitum. He's a strange (although dear) little kid who is so stubborn. Worst of it is, ds2 is now copying. Last night they settled at 1a.m., and ds3 generally wakes at 5am. This has been the pattern for months.

Once asleep, he's out for seven hours and then wide awake. this is progress- it was 5 hours!!!

Dad works nights, so I'm alone with this one (and also breastfeeding which means I need to sit down at some point during the evening).

You poor, poor mum, I feel very sorry for u. Look at the time!, Yes I'm up with my little one dd, of 20 months. She has wind until now, She is having a snack at present in the hope she can pass her wind!!.

Re your 4 yr old, what time does he get up in the am? Does he have an afternnon nap? If he does, maybe consider cutting it out completely. Has he always been like this? Maybe he simply is'nt tired, Is he hungry? Have u tried the star charts (form of bribery) ie if he goes to sleep, he will be rewarded in the am with a special treat, ie video or whatever.

U must be totally exhausted, please give us some more info.

fimbles have you tried rubbing or massaging her tummy in a clockwise direction to get the wind out?

Punnet, I would probably take out the afternoon nap and give them lots of activities during the day that they are very tired at night and so long for sleep.

i APPRECIATE THE ADVICE , BUT HE DOESN'T HAVE A DAYTIME NAP- GAVE THEM UP AT 18 MONTHS. HE ALSO ATTENDS MONTESSORI OR PLAYGROUP EVERY DAY, SO HE SHOULD BE TIRED. BUT NEVER IS. INTERESTINGLY, PHYSICALLY HE IS WAY AHEAD OF HIS AGE GROUP- GYMNASTICS, CLIMBING, RUNNING- ALWAYS HAS BEEN. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS IS LINKED TO A LOW SLEEP REQUIREWMENT?
