Tips for getting baby to take a dummy??

I've convinced myself that if I can get dd to take a dummy it will help solve our sleep problems/get her off using me as a dummy ALL night. I realise this in unrealistic but even if it helped a little bit....

She is six months. Please don't give me all the reasons not to have a dummy or tell me it's too late.

I just need tips on how to convince her it's a good idea. Please?!

My husband used to gently tap the end of the dummy for a minute or two and that made DD accept it. I have no idea how it works, but it does.

Mmmmm I'd be looking at why she wakes so much. Reflux? Wind? Tongue tie? Teeth?

Nothing worked with DS. He's never taken one.

We had to have a visit from the dummy fairy to get 2.11yo DD to give hers up.

I think they either take one, or they won't. You can't make them!

try every make /shape you can find.... We eventually found a silicone one worked. Good luck I know how you feel... We got dd to take it and then she self weaned herself off it ( at 3.11.29 the night of her 4th birthday ) - has perfect teeth and speaks fine

My DTs never had dummies but I bought comforter blankets from jojo mamon bebe like these and they both suck the feet to get to sleep instead. I think it helps their teething pain. I used to sleep with one stuffed down my bra to get the milk smell on them! Maybe worth a try?

We had to try a variety of different ones before DD found one she 'liked'. However we started her on it much younger (about a month) and weaned her OFF it at 6 months. If you're bfing, perhaps try expressing a little breast milk on to the teat?

If you are breast feeding try to find one that looks like your nipple shape after a feed.
Warm up the teat in hot water before offering it.
Offer it with a muslin or similar you have slept with.
Try giving it just after a feed when they are at the most dreamy.

We started dd2 with a dummy at roughly the same age. We were trying to get her to move away from bf onto formula- however she really missed comfort feeding.
We found that as she was used to being breastfed rather than bottle she preferred a latex teat (the brown ones)- as these apparently are harder -more like a nipple than the softer clear silicon ones.

Pleeeeease whatever you do, DO NOT dip the dummy in sugar, ribena, formula, breast milk or anything like that or you will rot her teeth.

Maybe DD just doesn't want it.

Thankyou for the advice people. I really appreciate it.

You might be right zebedee. I have been trying the last couple of days with different dummies and at various stages of awakeness/mood. I haven't dipped it in anything but I did try warming it with warm water. When awake and happy she things its a new toy and giggles and puts it in and out of mouth like a toy. She likes to feed to sleep and comfort suck so I've been trying to ease her off boob post feed and ease the dummy in...she does NOT like that! Pulls it out and gets herself back on boob before I can blink!

She knows what she wants!!

I know it's not what you want to hear but I agree with a previous poster, you just can't make her take it. DD didn't when I was at my wits end BFing all night, and day it seemed. And that was when I tried at six weeks. Now she's two I'm so glad I don't have the battle of weaning her off one. There are more than enough other battles! But she did start having a bit of formula at night at six months even though I still BFd her until 10 months. I don't know how you feel about that...

I was joking. My boys wouldn't take dummies ever.
