Friends of mine have a baby born about 5 days ago, he was 8lb 30z but has lost nearly 1lb since birth and has been taken back in to hospital with mum for monitoring. Spoke to her dh tonight and she has had a bit of prob breastfeeding but today it seems better, he looks pink and healthy apparantly but the HV insisted that he went to hosp

Is this normal weight loss for a tiny breastfed babe? I don't know cos I bottle fed.

I think it is a bit more than would be considered "normal", but chances are that all is OK anyway. I think "normal" is up to 10%? but some babies lose more initially without it being a problem.

Thanks Oakmaiden. I thought that was the case. I will introduce her to mumset asap then she can ask her own questions (who knows she may already be here...)

Not unusual to have weight loss of 10-15% but many midwives/ health visitors stress over it. Depends the baby's behaviour - ie disinterested/sleepy - whether admission is necessary. Hope she is in a hospital that has a B/F counsellor. The worst thing is when admission results in formula supplements without attention being paid to technique of B/F.
