My 8 year old DD found a piece of cardboard about two months ago. She gave it a name and played pretend games with it and carried it everywhere. I thought this was rather odd behaviour for an 8 year old but hoped she'd grow out of it. Anyway as it got steadily more minging, she taped it up with sticking plasters until today, it finally got beyond repair and she came out of school in tears. When should I call the child psychologists :) She seems fine otherwise but could there be something underlying?

I can't offer any advice but I can say it sounds like your DD is a really sweet sensitive little girl!

my son has a rock that i am not allowed to throw out. he's had it since he was about 9. odd yes, but perfectly normal behaviour as far as i'm concerned.

he also had this cheap toy from school that was effectively a balloon filled with flour and decorated with a face. he sobbed when it broke.

so don't worry too much - they grow out of it.

I normally just look through threads however when I read yours i smiled to myself. I have no suggestions to your question but thought i would share our dd has a fascination with the Hoover, insists on cuddling it, playing with it and wishing it good night and it generally hangs around the dining room!

Lots of this here. My DD1 has had attachments to sticks, bits of cloth, bits of broken balloon etc. Stones in particular. I always found Makka Pakka very comforting in this respect.

My ds carried around and chatted to ' brian the cuff link' for a few weeks, much to our amusement.

Sounds cute. Reminds me of when I was around 8-9 I had an elastic band ball that I had made, I called it "Gabrielle" and I took "Gabrielle" everywhere with me, caring it and mothering it, lol. I was inconsolable when I bounced "Gabrielle" and it landed into the river Brent. I'm a completely normal adult now and it's one of those stories my parents liked to bring up from time to embarrass me over the years. She'll just cringe a bit when she's older...
