Hair raising....

DS is 2 and a half and the last time he went for a hair cut the barber gave up half way through as he was scared he'd take a finger off...it was, according to dp, not a plesant experience - ds was in tears and struggling...
Anyway bought clippers and had a bash ourselves last night - he still fought/cried, but we kind of managed it, except he now looks like he auditioning for a part as a street urchin...
So any advice? How do we get him to have a haircut with out the tantrums? - or is he destined to have dodgy haircuts for a while yet...

DS was exactly the same and like you bought clippers. We used to have to warn him it was going to happen later that day and then promise him a bag of buttons or whatever afterwards. Very traumatic all round. It does get better though and now at just 4 we go to the hairdressers quite happily and he sits there as good as gold.

We have had the same problems with ds1, now 3.5. We have used clippers since he was born and he screams like a banshee the whole time we are cutting his hair.

Once I took him to a hairdressers, he started off calm then gradually began getting more and more hysterical. The barbers tried everything - gave him lollies, put Cbeebies on the tv - but he wouldn't stop crying, then I had to have him in my lap. They did manage to finish the haircut and it's the one and only time his hair has looked really good but it's just not worth the trauma so now dh just uses the clippers and ds ends up with practically a shaved head.

sounds like dodgy haircuts for a while yet then!

Feed him sweets all through, praise him non-stop and distract him with books, silly games etc. And a big treat afterwards for being a good boy - even if he wasn't.

Agree with aloha - it's the only we can get ds1's hair cut (4.5) - he screams the salon down as if we are sawing his arms off!! Ds2 who is 2 is an angel!

We have the same problem with ds, 2.5. We give him a lollipop at the START of the process and let him sit on his dad's lap the whole time. It gets easier every time and he did get some dodgy 'do's at first!
