I'm thinking of adding Eartha to my list of girl options but would like to know other opinions/first impressions of this name? Also any other girl's names you think I might like (espec beginning with 'E")

Thanks :-)

kelda Fri 02-May-14 09:11:10

Prefer Esther/Esme

RiverTam Fri 02-May-14 09:14:34

first thought was Eartha Kitt, not really someone I would choose to name my child after (just because I don't like her voice, I don't know anything about her personally). I think it's quite a hard-sounding name.

meditrina Fri 02-May-14 09:21:21

I'd think Kitt too. Is that an association you like?

How about Erica, Adelaide, Irma, Estelle, Elspeth?

ThatBloodyWoman Fri 02-May-14 09:26:02

Love love love Eartha.

How about Ember also?

ThatBloodyWoman Fri 02-May-14 09:26:33

Or Eden?

Jubelteen Fri 02-May-14 09:27:47

And Eartha Kitt is rhyming slang for a shit!

OwlCapone Fri 02-May-14 09:28:17

I think it's quite an ugly sounding name. What was it that appealed to you about it?

makeminea6x Fri 02-May-14 09:31:00

Eartha kitt is super cool and she has a great voice. There was also a philanthropist called Eartha m m white who was a great woman.

seashellgreen81 Fri 02-May-14 09:50:14

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

'ThatBloodyWoman' - have you seen the 'hippy names' quiz that has recently been posted on here? I did the quiz and my baby name was Ember! So your post made me smile :-) I love the name Eden but DP says its too 'religious'!

Owlcapone: I guess i'm after a strong but feminine name. Not to sound obvious but the 'earthiness' of this name quite appealed to me. Also its an old English name and i'm quite attracted to ancient names.

I'm aware of Eartha Kitt but not heard any of her music.

Currently top of my girl list are Ivy and Annora.

OwlCapone Fri 02-May-14 10:15:23

Don't go for Annora if your surname is Carrot smile

I prefer both Ivy and Annora to Eartha

RiverTam Fri 02-May-14 10:28:48

hmm, don't really like Ivy (old-fashioned but not in a good way) or Annora (which looks either made up or misspelled) either, sorry!

seashellgreen81 Fri 02-May-14 10:51:17

No Annora isn't made up! It's a lovely English medieval name. Also I met a very nice lady with this name once. We're also considering the Breton spelling Enora. I'm learning that I seem to be attracted by real 'marmite' names! haha!

Chopsypie Fri 02-May-14 10:58:24

Eartha is rhyming slang for shit. That was my immediate thought.

I love Esther and Eden though

RiverTam Fri 02-May-14 11:03:32

no no, I didn't say I thought it was made up, but that it looked/sounded made up.

I just think it's one that your DD will spend her life telling people how to spell, and she may not thank you for that smile.

SooticaTheWitchesCat Fri 02-May-14 11:05:26

I quite like it actually smile

JapaneseMargaret Fri 02-May-14 11:07:48

I have to say, I don't love it.

My DS 5 was at Kindy with an Eartha. I'm as amazed now to hear of you considering it, as I was when I first came across her name.

I've heard of Earth Kitt, but she doesn't exactly provide great PR for the name. I mean, out of the gazillions of girls names out there, you genuinely think Eartha is as good as it gets....? Really?

If so, then, um ... yeah, go for it. confused

BelleOfTheBorstal Fri 02-May-14 11:20:31

How about Gaia? Eartha really doesn't do it for me!

higgle Fri 02-May-14 11:29:17

There is an artist called Annora Spence I think. I've seen a memorial to an Annona too somewhere. Annis is another similar sort of name.

Poughle Fri 02-May-14 11:33:36

Annora is beautiful. I'm afraid I don't care foot Eartha.

Ursa? Similar sound but less "hard" somehow, and a bear is a great power animal (if we're getting all hippie)

Annora and Eartha both lovely!

DoItTooJulia Fri 02-May-14 12:34:40

Love Eartha, really love it.

Martha is similar, but doesn't begin with an E, so might not be your cup of tea?

manicinsomniac Fri 02-May-14 17:22:53

I have never ever heard this name before - I think I rather like it

My only negative is that it sounds very like Bertha which, for some reason, I really don't like.

Etta, Enya, Eden, Eriskay, Ebony, Elowen, Eilidh, Effie, Elodie

LadySybilLikesCake Fri 02-May-14 17:27:21

Evangeline? Eva for short? I think it's a lovely name.

flavourflave Fri 02-May-14 17:47:17

Eartha... U need to be quite a character to pull off this name. Yaya? Aisling? Elfin? Elvira? Lenora? Linnea? Merixchell? Artemis? Loveday? Lotus? More marmite names!

DogCalledRudis Fri 02-May-14 18:13:08

Very difficult to pronounce

AvonCallingBarksdale Fri 02-May-14 18:22:43

Ooh, not Eartha. Really for the rhyming slang. Elena/Eleanor/Elsbeth/Elodie/Emma?

CoreyTrevorLahey Fri 02-May-14 18:26:56

I like Eartha! Eartha Kitt is super cool.

Annora Carrot is only a problem if you're English wink

ThatBloodyWoman Fri 02-May-14 18:41:15

Just seen that thread on active seashell - I hadn't seen it before.

I can't see the test thingy on my tablet screen though as its too small sad

I don't like it personally, like someone else said it sounds quite ugly. My own opinion however..

HavannaSlife Fri 02-May-14 18:53:27

My first thought was poo

weatherall Fri 02-May-14 18:54:43

Eartha is better than all those horrid old lady names.

I saw eartha kitt in an interview and she seemed really cool.

I like Estella too.

Also Ebony, Emer, Etaine, Elaine, Elena, Evan, Ever, Eleica.

Bowlersarm Fri 02-May-14 18:55:46

I like it!

I might spell it Ertha just because Eartha is a bit earthy.

Great sound to it.

ThatBloodyWoman Fri 02-May-14 18:59:24

Artandco Fri 02-May-14 19:01:45

What about Inara?

BethGoLightly Fri 02-May-14 19:08:43

It's awful, sorry.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone Fri 02-May-14 19:18:49

Ursula is the name you need, I reckon.

MabelSideswipe Fri 02-May-14 19:21:13

Eartha Kitt was a pretty cool woman actually. She had a really hard childhood but was a pretty big star until she blotted her copybook in the USA speaking out against the Vietnam war. She wsd called a sadistic nymphomanic by the CIA! You can't get better than that.

flavourflave Fri 02-May-14 19:22:22

I really like the name and have toyed with adding it to my list. I also like

beershuffle Fri 02-May-14 23:35:19

Rhyming slang for shit round here. It would be like calling a baby Poo.

telsa Sat 03-May-14 00:24:13

Fantastic name. So strong. And listen to some Eartha Kitt now!

RaisingSteam Sat 03-May-14 00:27:42

I know an Eartha and she is as lovely as her name. So I'd vote yes.

Alisvolatpropiis Sat 03-May-14 01:29:38

Eartha is hideous. Regardless of the amazingly talented namesake.

Alisvolatpropiis Sat 03-May-14 01:30:25

I second Ursula.

Alisvolatpropiis Sat 03-May-14 01:31:20

Sorry, Ursula is a great name is what I meant.

Tranquilitybaby Sun 04-May-14 08:12:32

No because of the rhyming slang

Only1scoop Sun 04-May-14 08:19:19

If you told me you were prg with an 'Eartha' I probably would chuckle....just a little smile

MrsTamkin Sun 04-May-14 09:15:30

Enora is lovely!!!

Mybellyisaneasteregg Sun 04-May-14 10:31:50

I think of Bertha.
