What have we missed?

DD2 is due in little over 2 weeks and I'm pretty confident she is going to remain nameless.
DD1 (3.5) is Esmé and we are struggling to find a name we love as much as hers. I chose her name when I was 15 so half my life ago.

Names I like that OH has vetoed are:
Elsa
Mila
Alba
Alia
Arya
Orla

Names he likes that I have vetoed are:
Isabelle
Summer
Marnie
Lorelei
Leilani

We currently have 2 on our list we both agree on though we feel neither is the 1:
Lydia
Amélie

Is Amélie too close to Emily? My brother and his soon to be wife will use Emily if they ever have a girl, she feels the same about that name as I do Esmé so i wouldn't use it if it would cause upset.
What have we missed? I dont want to just make do with a name, ideally something not in the top 50 though its not a massive issue, i know DD1s name is rising the charts and it doesn't bother me. Im beginning to get a little stressed that she wont have a name!
If it helps, she would of been either Arlo, Asa or Seth if she had been a boy.
Thanks

littlebluedog12 Sun 23-Mar-14 20:31:45

I think you also need to bear in mind you may never find a name that you love as much as DD1's name. I gave DD1 the name I had loved since the age of about 16- it was always going to be my girls name, without a shadow of a doubt.

When DD2 came along we had such a long list, and nothing really stood out for us. Even after we named her I wasn't sure. Now I love the name, mainly because it it hers, she has grown into it iyswim.

barnet Sun 23-Mar-14 20:33:25

Ooh Delphine is gorgeous with Esme.

dimdommilpot Sun 23-Mar-14 21:09:45

Some fabulous suggestions here thank you. Will see what OH says.

Esme and Lydia sounds great!

Good luck! We have 3 DSs and like you, I had decided on the first ones name way before I was even preg. It was a nightmare deciding on two more boy names! (We did get there in the end grin

NearTheWindymill Sun 23-Mar-14 21:25:57

Lydia and Amelie are much nicer than the others on either of the lists. My dd has a classic name. She is nearly 16. FWIW her friends who were given unusual, unique sorts of names detest them and have all vowed to give their own children "normal" names. Can't really post examples without outing myself I'm afraid.

Mireio Sun 23-Mar-14 22:34:52

Esme and Lydia would be perfect.

Prefer Lydia to Amelie

Anya
Celeste
Sylvie
Marion

I am a late 60s baby with an unusual name that I have always loved.

Allalonenow Sun 23-Mar-14 22:50:53

I agree about Amelie being much too close in sound to Esme.

I think Lydia is a lovely name, but would suggest also Leah or Leonie, as not overused but very pretty and interesting names.

If you would have used used Arlo for a boy, then give Leah or Leonie a try smile

Lydia is beautiful

Amelie will upset your SIL

Sleepy678 Mon 24-Mar-14 00:07:23

At baby groups I go to, the baby Amelie's are always called Emily by mistake. Think they are too similar.
Other names that may suit : Florence, Willow, Lottie, Nell ?

TheseAreTheJokesFolks Mon 24-Mar-14 00:19:20

Also is your first pronounced Ezme or ezmay or ezmeh
Is a nickname used
Is the spelling French Scottish or irish
Thought female form was esmee if former, like Renee or Aimee or Desiree with accents on first e although have seen a grave accent without second e

And Livia.

fideline Mon 24-Mar-14 05:16:21

Lyra?

dimdommilpot Mon 24-Mar-14 09:09:28

Its really difficult because i know so many kids since having DD and a lot of the names suggested are those of friends children.
I adore Sylvie, OH not so keen.
Esmé is Ezmay and gets her name or just Ez.
I really wanted Elsa and had gotten over them both having the same initial when OH sprug the 'my mums old friend had a dog called Elsa so we cant use that name' line on me! Gah!!!

traininthedistance Mon 24-Mar-14 10:39:02

Leonie as someone posted is lovely'

Esme and Leonie
Esme and Lydia
Esme and Lyra
Esme and Lottie
Esme and Lucy (somehow Ls seem to work very well!)

Or:
Esme and Aline
Esme and India
Esme and Elise
Esme and Ottilie

Esme and Sylvie is gorgeous - any chance you could get OH to rethink?

Blueberrybaby Mon 24-Mar-14 13:47:34

Lydia is gorgeous. Much prefer it to Amelie. If you aren't that much in love with Amelie I would leave it, as it is rather close to Emily.

How about Lara?

ROARmeow Tue 25-Mar-14 18:53:32

Lydia is a lovely name (my biased opinion)

Also love the name Celia for a girl. Was on my short-list for DD but vetoed by DH.

bakingtins Tue 25-Mar-14 19:31:33

Lydia is lovely.
Amelie is too close to Emily.

I think if you've always had a girl's name that was the one for your future DD it will be hard to match it. You will grow to love DD2's name just as much in time.

everlong Tue 25-Mar-14 20:42:33

I would put Esme with Alice, Florence or Martha.

Jemimapuddlemuck Tue 25-Mar-14 20:46:36

Julia?

I know an Arianna, which is very pretty, I think.

pencilsharpener Thu 27-Mar-14 19:15:32

I agree that Amelie is too close to Emily for you to use. They might both end up being shortened to Millie - which would be even more confusing!

Seems like you like short names ending in -a, and your DH likes longer, more unusual names. So names that you might both like could be:

Thalia
Mariella
Miranda
Serena (Think this goes beautifully with Esme)
Helena
Octavia
Xanthe
Pollyanna
Cordelia
Alexandra
Alexis
Arabella
Susannah (Susie)
Sabrina
Tabitha
Lucinda (Lucy)
Phillipa (Pippa)

Elllimam Thu 27-Mar-14 19:25:27

Lydia is gorgeous, it is one of my favourite names. I agree with pencil that Esme and Serena go well together too. I also think Amelie and Emily are very similar and likely to annoy SIL x

guineapig2014 Thu 27-Mar-14 19:32:23

I agree very much with pencil
Susannah and esme is great
Also
esme and elodie
Esme And Livia as said above
Esme and Xenia
Esme the xanthia
Esme and Evie
Esme and efa or Aoife
Hope this helps you!! thanks

mum2jakie Thu 27-Mar-14 22:01:45

What about Leila, Ella or Elspeth?

Galena Thu 27-Mar-14 22:20:09

Iona or Rosa?

AmysTiara Thu 27-Mar-14 22:23:56

Lila, Cecille, Alana?

Gugglebum Fri 28-Mar-14 04:00:05

Xanthe?
Of the two you agree on, I would say Lydia.

Milknosugarthanks Fri 28-Mar-14 13:08:11

Priya?

Esme & Priya

redspottydress Fri 28-Mar-14 13:11:09

Camille?

dimdommilpot Fri 28-Mar-14 20:23:02

There are some lovely options here thanks will mention to jamie. Elodie and Elspeth and ones i discounted cos of the same initial but i do love then. When i mentioned Elodie to him we both pronounce it different, for me its melody without the m, for him its ell O di.
Whilst trying to convince her to turn just now (she is breech as confirmed today at a late scan) i was calling her Lydia to see if it fits.

Frikadellen Sat 29-Mar-14 14:47:53

I would not use Amelie if dsil is set on Emily
The 2 Esme' I know has sisters called
Kitty short for Katherine
And Daphne

I always felt Esme & Daphne goes well together.

And as an aside any chance you would relent on Marnie? It's sooooo pretty and goes fab w Esme imo

Rtfairy Wed 02-Apr-14 20:50:16

Lydia is beautiful and goes well with your DD's name
