One boys name & one girls name that just makes you cringe!!

Girl - Girtrude
Boy - Gaylord

EsmereldaBelle Mon 20-Jan-14 08:56:05

Girl - Prudence hmm
Boy - Dick grin

Theas18 Mon 20-Jan-14 09:00:30

another " this will no go well" thread....

Superworm Mon 20-Jan-14 09:10:47

It is beyond me why women want to bitch about children's names....it's just unkind to everyone.

Theonlyoneiknow Mon 20-Jan-14 09:14:47

We have just had a horrible thread about worst names so why start another???

newyearhere Mon 20-Jan-14 09:21:00

RoseHoney Mon 20-Jan-14 09:39:37

These threads are just awful.
If you don't like a name then don't use it, no need to make other parents feel crap for their choice.

And by the way
It's Gertrude wink

brokenhearted55a Mon 20-Jan-14 10:08:46

Maybe and Nearly for two little girls.

HandragsNGladbags Mon 20-Jan-14 10:10:59

La-a - oh no that's made up
Chlamydia - oh no that's made up

Just thought I'd get those in first wink

My brother used to ride a horse called Gaylord <irrelevant fact>

Nataleejah Mon 20-Jan-14 10:21:05

Bledard and Iron (boys), Eskada (girl)

I live in Germany so I have tons.

Mechthild for a girl
Traugott for a boy.

Piddlepuddle Mon 20-Jan-14 10:24:18

Come on OP, tell us your kids names first, I mean fair's fair and all that.

Horrible thread, who gives a fuck what anyone calls their children.

I'd like to say Summer-Rose and Khylan, OP. Buy wouldn't that hurt your feelings?

So extrapolate that yo all the parents out there whose names you want to snurk at with your thread.

Think on.

JanePurdy Mon 20-Jan-14 11:00:33

Horrible thread.

Theonlyoneiknow Mon 20-Jan-14 11:13:43

I have been in tears over some comments about my DS's name on threads like these. Why do people start them, just dont get it.

MaryQueenOfSpots Mon 20-Jan-14 11:15:09

Janine. Yuk.

topknob Mon 20-Jan-14 11:15:50

Girl: Highbury

Can't think of a boys one.

LightsPlease Mon 20-Jan-14 11:16:24

peppinagiro Mon 20-Jan-14 11:21:40

Yeah, Khylan is pretty awful.

I don't get it.

Surely a large percentage of people on this thread have children? And they all took their time choosing a name, thinking about it, it means something to everyone. It's a personal choice made for many different personal reasons.

But somehow it's ok to come on here and sneer and laugh and cringe at people's personal choices?

That says more about you than the person who chose a name you didn't approve of.

I fully expect my ds1 name to pop up on here, it's a very much hated name. I love it, my DH loves it, my ds1 loves it.
That's pretty much the only people who matter.

My DDs name won't be on here because it is a "made up" name (it actually isn't but why let the truth get in the way of Internet snobbery) and I think my ds2 name is ok but I think it was once proclaimed "pretentious".

Look at how much I give a fuck grin

Only1scoop Mon 20-Jan-14 11:40:26

It's Gertrude by the way.
We pointed out a few days ago for you that Finley is Spelt Finlay. I know the names of your choice which you keep posting keep getting flamed but maybe get a good baby naming book/site ....you can check spellings/meanings (if that is important to you).
Myself not included but I know these posts can upset people.

Theonlyoneiknow Mon 20-Jan-14 11:40:37

I could have written your post tantrumsandballoons except for I really let the comments get to me (initially, as I was totally oblivious DS had such a disapproved of name on MN!)

UriGeller Mon 20-Jan-14 11:41:09

I know a child named after Supermans original birth name.. That's pretty funny.

And there's a lady in town who has a baby with a very pretty Broderie Anglaise pram cover thing with her daughters name embroidered on it in pink curly letters. Miley-Rae.

I think its funny though, not horrid or cringeworthy.

Trudy / Trudie are both derived from Gertrude as is Truus which is pronounced with a slightly rolled r and a soft s and sounds beautiful.

Pinkbell123 Mon 20-Jan-14 12:34:17

Raaa why do people do these threads?!? Everyone's different, everyone likes different names get over it. I actually quite like Gertrude (Trudie)

KatoPotato Mon 20-Jan-14 12:35:48

Just not for me thanks.

gruffalosfriend Mon 20-Jan-14 13:18:11

I don't have any 'worst' names and no name has ever made me cringe. But there are people that I dislike and, by association, their names!
Equally, a lovely person can make any name beautiful in my mind!

What is your name op?

tammytoby Mon 20-Jan-14 14:39:19

Would also like to know op's name!

My lovely gran was Gertrude and that's what I associate it with now.

Only1scoop Mon 20-Jan-14 14:43:07

Op never seems to come back to her threads. Not even for a thank you hmm

GoodnessIsThatTheTime Mon 20-Jan-14 14:43:51

Urigeller. I think I know the same person. Didn't she originally think it sounded like a lovely Indian name smile

plainjanine Mon 20-Jan-14 14:52:00

MaryQueenOfSpots, I like what you did there, but us Janine's are not all arseholes. ;-)

BronzeHorseman Mon 20-Jan-14 14:56:21

Marmaduke (though I reckon that Gaylord is worse) and Hortense.

Alisvolatpropiis Mon 20-Jan-14 19:28:43

All other names are fine.

ZingSweetApple Mon 20-Jan-14 19:31:41

twin girls Vanilla and Cinnamon

boys: Hero, Snake, Fox

hattymattie Mon 20-Jan-14 19:33:29

I met a German girl called Wiltrude once pronounced Viltrude.

blueemerald Mon 20-Jan-14 19:33:39

Younger twin sisters of a boy I teach called Meek and Mild. Yes, there are religious connotations but imagine going through life introducing yourself as Mild. We have regular discussions at work about which twin has the worse deal.

monkeymamma Mon 20-Jan-14 22:08:06

I luuuuuuurve the name Prudence (nn Pru)! So does my dh. We are both big Beatles fans. Lucky for any future dd of mine my mum has vetoed it (sensible).

UriGeller Tue 21-Jan-14 08:39:30

Goodness, little Kal-El's parents (well, Dad) is biiig superman fan. Goes to Comic Con dressed up and everything !

Or do you mean Miley-Rae?

When i was pregnant i wanted to call our dd Atman, its a Hindu word that means The spiritual life principle of the universe, residing in the individual's real self, without ego. Its like the true soul.

But it was kindly pointed out by someone not subject to pregnancy hormones that it sounds a lot like "Batman". grin

Lancelottie Tue 21-Jan-14 08:43:00

I was genuinely struck dumb this week by Foxglove, but given how many Daisies, Poppies and Lilies we know, hey, why not?

tattychicken Tue 21-Jan-14 09:14:12

Little girl with first name Chelsea, middle names Stamford Bridge. sad

LinghamStyle Tue 21-Jan-14 09:22:44

I don't like names. I think we should all just have numbers.

RayPurchase Tue 21-Jan-14 09:28:03

Ooh... I know a Kal-El too! Maybe there's a few of them out there.

GoodnessIsThatTheTime Tue 21-Jan-14 09:47:48

Uri - no, I know of a kalel with an Indian dad.... There's more than one! I love it, it really suits him.

peggylane Tue 21-Jan-14 12:59:20

I love the ignorance of people on here saying things like: I live abroad and they have strange names over here, shock horror, as well as a strange sounding language and different culture- who would believe it??? As a foreigner myself living in the UK I can assure you that there are lots of English/ Scottish/ Welsh names that sounded strange or indeed foreign to me when I first arrived but I would have never dreamed of making fun of them as I understood that for everybody living here they were perfectly normal and part of the culture....
I totally agree with everybody that said that names are a very personal thing and it's simply rude to sneer at somebody's very personal choice and be childish about it.

mellicauli Tue 21-Jan-14 13:14:46

whitepuddingsupper Tue 21-Jan-14 16:50:49

There's a Kal-El at my DD's nursery, I never knew about the superman thing I thought it was middle eastern or something.

ZingSweetApple Tue 21-Jan-14 18:09:36

Nicolas Cage named his son Kal-El too.

mummyjanine Tue 21-Jan-14 18:12:25

How is that Kal-El pronounced??

blueemerald Tue 21-Jan-14 19:22:50

I totally agree that 'names are a very personal thing'. They are personal to the people they are given to not given by. This is why parents need to put their own egos aside when naming those children and think about the future ramifications. If you love Chelsea (to pick one example) so much change your name don't inflict that on a baby.

Kal - like Carl

El - same is beginning of elephant

oohdaddypig Tue 21-Jan-14 22:12:20

In fairness aren't these threads relatively light hearted?

It's no different to asking opinions on a specified name. It's just a personal opinion - it does not make it fact. I'm not that interested in baby names and if I was sensitive about it I wouldn't read the thread.

What is wrong with gaylord anyway? smile

SPsMrLoverManSHABBA Tue 21-Jan-14 22:18:20

My sons name. I hate it, its so shite. Worse name ever.

Well must be as it appears here often.

It begins with the dreaded K.

People.could call their children ShitStain-TibbyLane* for all I care. I couldn't give a less of a fuckle about what other people name their children.

*Feel free to use it.

WaitingForMe Tue 21-Jan-14 22:23:29

DSs name is sometimes called pretentious. The shortened version (which we call him) is a dog name.

I think I did pretty well to fail on two distinct areas of name hatred grin

Jemimapuddlemuck Tue 21-Jan-14 22:28:09

My DS has a name that's (gasp) popular - the most popular in fact - a cardinal sin on MN.

Theonlyoneiknow Tue 21-Jan-14 22:28:35

Our DS probably have the same name shabba grin

LunchLadyWannabe Tue 21-Jan-14 22:33:36

Boy - Drazen

Girl - Alice

SPsMrLoverManSHABBA Tue 21-Jan-14 22:34:07

TheOnly I am intrigued to know. I don't think they will but will be surprised if they do grin

Theonlyoneiknow Tue 21-Jan-14 22:42:47

It's Kyle, was brought up on the last "worst baby names" thread and definitely seems to be on the mumsnet never call your child this list grin

But we love it and he really suits in. I don't know any other little boys with the same name but going by lots of posts on baby names there are hundreds of them running around causing mayhem and throwing things at teachers

PiggyPlumPie Tue 21-Jan-14 22:45:14

DD2 has a K name that is also a nickname. Two strikes for me!

DS name doesn't sound good when screeched by Bianca on Eastenders but suits him down to the ground.

LunchLadyWannabe Tue 21-Jan-14 22:46:28

Im a fan of the name kyle, its not over used.

I thought the name was going to be Kayden

SPsMrLoverManSHABBA Tue 21-Jan-14 23:24:09

Not Kyle, I have Kyles in my family though. My sons name was on that list too!

MoominsYonisAreScary Wed 22-Jan-14 05:50:09

Ds1 has a naughty boy name

Ds2 has an american actors name (2 in lost boys)

Ds3 has a nickname on his birth certificate and name has gone up in popularity due to eastenders stolen baby story line.

Ds4 has the name of the wolf in twilight
Ds5 is called joseph grin

LightsPlease Wed 22-Jan-14 06:39:49

What is wrong with the name kyle. Perfectly normal name.

RobinSparkles Wed 22-Jan-14 06:49:38

I like Kyle. I have a DN called Kyle, although one day he said to me: "why do you call me Kyle? All my friends call me ky-ul!"
confused Erm...

These threads are disgusting and goady, and created only to hurt and sneer at people. And it's CHILDREN who are being discussed. For fuck's sake.

Lancelottie Wed 22-Jan-14 11:53:37

I'm intrigued, Waiting! Do you have a Monty, Toby or (P)Tolly? Or is your son called something like Rover Barksworth the Third?

Alisvolatpropiis Wed 22-Jan-14 20:12:45

Whilst I see your point, it isn't children being discussed, it's names. Names belong to adults too. Some names mentioned are not exactly in common use at any rate.

It interests me how a name can effect how you are perceived etc

I do find it tiresome when people trot out the same names all the time. Certainly some of these names are not my style but...Jaden (for example) just isn't the worst name one could possibly have. It just isn't. It's easy to say and spell, people are familiar with it. There's no "WTAF is that actually even a real word never mind a name" thoughts when the name is said aloud.

chandlery Wed 22-Jan-14 20:25:18

My friends boss had two children, Hera and Zeus!

Just thought I'd also say, I didn't make this thread for people to involve children or even baby names. I was just curious to see what names people didn't like, and I was pointing more towards old names that aren't very much heard of these days, and very rarely used as children's names. I was not trying to upset people for any reason whatsoever, I would simply delete this thread if I could! Didn't expect to get so much grief, and also.. I have an aunt called
Gertrude who hates her name, it's not like I was pointing out random names to offend people. This is just stupid, how do I delete this thread??

i love how many people claim to be affronted by these threads, yet contribute anyway!!!

controversial comment here im afraid, but i genuinely believe that whilst making us all guilty of being nasty cow bags, some of the threads here do spare some poor souls a lifetime of torment over truly diabolical names!

Gwan then, Ilovekittyelise, point me to a poster who has claimed to be affronted by these threads, yet contributed anyway.

My speed readign may be failing me.

TheFabulousIdiot Wed 22-Jan-14 22:47:43

M granny was called Gertrude I love it

Just looked at the website for my local school and there's a pupil called Barbie.

ps mummyjanine, not sure how much time you spendon babyname threads (iv been here loads recently due to imminent arrival of un named one), but if you hang around you will notice that some people kind of enjoy the sport of it in a not very kind type of wsy. dont be upset, its obvious you were just having a bit of fun!

BuntyPenfold Thu 23-Jan-14 07:51:43

Actually, there is a worst, it was Male- for a girl.

ZingSweetApple Thu 23-Jan-14 08:00:25

report your opening post and ask MNHQ to delete it if that's what you want

but I wouldn't. if people get involved and then get upset it's their fault fir getting involved.wink

Algorithm Thu 23-Jan-14 10:27:05

I'd say my own name, of course. It's well and truly hated on MN due to having been used on Eastenders and is 'too American' but actually before that it was only one thing - the most gorgeous shade of blue and a very luxurious jewellers.

Oh my sister's name should probably be included for being 'chavvy' and a 'little girl's' name. Oh and the shortening is obviously horrifying if you do decide to name your precious DD it how could you cope with such a bad NN? hmm

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT Thu 23-Jan-14 10:52:55

My name is hated grin apparently 'every other little girl in Britain is called it', and it's a 'chav' name. There certainly weren't many around in 1994, and I've never met another with the name, 'chav' or not wink

MrsKoala Thu 23-Jan-14 17:36:26

I came on this thread actually looking for suggestions for our next dc. DSs name gets some pretty nasty responses so i thought i may find something i like amongst peoples most hated. Sure enough the very first post had a name i love in it - Gertrude. I think Rudy is an absolutely gorgeous name for a girl. Haven't found any boys names i like, so come on people dig deep and think of ones you reaaallly hate. I'm sure to love it.

Double barreled names and names that look made up like khylan.

brokenhearted55a Thu 23-Jan-14 19:46:22

Mummyjanine is a pretty sickening name.

Without the mummy bit Janine is a pretty crap name.

chaos first page is full of posts of that tone!

Janorisa Thu 23-Jan-14 20:41:26

I love Prudence

ZingSweetApple Thu 23-Jan-14 21:04:01

I suggest Oblivion or Serendipity. I dare ya!grin

MrsKoala Thu 23-Jan-14 21:38:05

DH wants Callaban confused

MrsKoala Thu 23-Jan-14 21:39:11

Sorry, Caliban i mean.

mummyjanine Thu 23-Jan-14 21:42:17

Yeah i hate my name too! It's pretty awful lol but doesn't bother me, couldn't care less tbh so say what you like smile

hollyisalovelyname Thu 23-Jan-14 21:43:26

Gobnait (girl)
Lancelot ( boy) I always think Prancealot grin

ZingSweetApple Thu 23-Jan-14 21:58:24

not Caliban, noooooo!
sounds like Taliban

or a Scrabble mix up of Cannibal. just no.

hoppinghare Thu 23-Jan-14 22:05:24

Worst girl's name - mummyjanine

MrsKoala Thu 23-Jan-14 22:27:43

I've vetoed it Zing. DS has a name of a Shakespearian character (not intentionally) so we'd look like Shakespeare weirdoes - which we aren't btw.

Alisvolatpropiis Thu 23-Jan-14 22:30:16

Does your DS's name begin with H?Short?

I like lots of the Shakespearean names smile

MrsKoala Thu 23-Jan-14 22:32:47

No, it's Bottom wink

MrsKoala Thu 23-Jan-14 22:36:28

Not really of course - it starts with L and it is the most beauteous boys name in the land. The problem is we love it so much we just can't think of one for the expected sibling which is as gorgeous. I am thinking of starting a thread for inspiration but i may not be able to handle negative comments. I got some last time and i still feel angry about it. Which i accept is sad and funny at the same time. But it just felt so personal.

Alisvolatpropiis Thu 23-Jan-14 23:11:43

I think I know what it is MrsK, I think it's a lovely name, tough one to match though, as you say!

ZingSweetApple Fri 24-Jan-14 07:08:52

ZingSweetApple Fri 24-Jan-14 07:10:03
