What were your children's shadow names?

A shadow name for those who do not know the term is the name that would have been used if your child was the opposite sex

DD1 - Maximillian
DD2 Benjamin
DS Ilona
DD3 Bertram or Søren. (was going to be the 2 names but we would wait and see if he felt like a B or an S and use the other as mn)

wigglesrock Wed 08-Jan-14 19:29:58

Dd1 would have been Leo
Dd2 would have been Dominic
Dd3 would have been Joe

Middle name would have been a choice from Ciaran, John, Patrick.

Busyoldfool Wed 08-Jan-14 20:22:10

DD was a surprise and I didn't even think of any names, boys or girls, until after she was born - I was just trying to get my head round the idea of a BABY!
DS would have been Edith Helen.

Lutrine Wed 08-Jan-14 20:23:00

DD would've been Edward (Eddie) or Arthur, we haven't told anyone IRL that though cos if we do ever have a boy we'd probably use one of them!

Skiingmaniac Wed 08-Jan-14 20:25:20

Ds would have been Zoe
Dd would have been Finley

DoItTooJulia Wed 08-Jan-14 20:27:40

Ds1 would have been Bo
Ds2 Nadia, Isla or Riba

ems1910 Wed 08-Jan-14 20:31:45

DD1 Tyler
DD2 (no boys name picked)
DD3 Mason
DD4 Joshua

Maryz Wed 08-Jan-14 21:06:26

This is interesting.

How many of you who had a boy then girl or vice versa used the name for your second child?

I'm just wondering whether names tend to last the test of time, or whether each pregnancy has a different set of names altogether, iyswim.

SanityClause Wed 08-Jan-14 21:12:19

DD1 would've been Edward James
We were fairly sure of the sex of both DD2 and DS, so we didn't have backup names.

SanityClause Wed 08-Jan-14 21:15:03

Maryz, in our case, we didn't even consider either name when DS ame along.

We had also chose a name for DD2, when DD1 was born. We didn't use that, either!

wigglesrock Wed 08-Jan-14 21:15:33

It is Maryz, it's funny I absolutely love dd3s name, it was a name that we decided on very quickly & never quivered. We had a few other faves, but she was always going to be her name but that name never came up when we were considering names for our older two girls.

Whether it was a name in a tv show book or whatever I don't know but it never was even mentioned for dd1 or dd2.

Maryz Wed 08-Jan-14 21:20:54

Strange isn't it?

I don't know anyone who has "kept" a boy's name and used it on a later girl or vice versa. It's almost as though the names are taken confused.

WaitingForMe Wed 08-Jan-14 21:28:05

DS would have been Evelyn.

If we had another child (won't happen as DH had a vasectomy), I wouldn't have Evelyn as an option. That's the name of the baby that was not to be. She existed in my imagination for about 16 weeks then disappeared. It'd feel weird to use the name again.

ThoughSheBeButLittle Wed 08-Jan-14 21:47:56

DS1 Heather although I was always pretty convinced he was a boy
DS2 Rose
DD Rory although DH was briefly keen to revisit Heather instead of the name she ended up with.

Theonlyoneiknow Wed 08-Jan-14 21:49:44

DD would have been Harris

Blipbip Wed 08-Jan-14 21:52:39

I wanted DS1 to be Manus, I didn't use it for DS2 I don't know why as I still love the name.

Blipbip Wed 08-Jan-14 21:53:19

Ex over ruled me sad

GirlWithTheDirtyShirt Wed 08-Jan-14 22:06:59

DD would have been Sebastian Edward. If we have another child and it's a boy we'd probably use that. We also liked Alexander but I've totally gone off that.

Our alternative girls name has now been used by a family member (odd as it's v unusual) so if we ever have another DD we'll be right back yo the drawing board.

SlightlyDampWellies Wed 08-Jan-14 22:11:49

DD1 would have been Theo
DD2 would have been Theo
DS 1 is NOT Theo, incidentally, but would have been Raven or Isis.

Dollydishus Wed 08-Jan-14 22:12:32

Ds1 would have been Jessica.

DD's boys' name we kept and used for DS2. <lazy>

Dollydishus Wed 08-Jan-14 22:15:07

That post was in response to Maryz....we chose our names when we had DS (our first baby) and said we pd use them up in order...which we have done, more or less. (Some as mddle names).

GimmeDaBoobehz Wed 08-Jan-14 22:17:12

Leo or Alex, probably.

CeliaLytton Wed 08-Jan-14 22:20:56

Maryz we had a shadow name for DS but did not use it for dd, it did feel like it had been taken, that name will always be ds's, absolutely bonkers I know!

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping Wed 08-Jan-14 22:24:22

DD1 would have been Jack William
DD2 would have been Dillon Michael
DD3 would have been Dillon but undecided on middle name

I only have DDs so no chance of using them. If I were to have a DS with a new parent I think I would pick a new name as it feels strange to think of using a name I picked with exH when the child was somebody elses.

Ds1 would have been Margot Poesie
Ds2 would have been Delphine Viola
If we ever have a girl we may use a variation of those but dh has his heart set on mythological names.

Frikadellen Thu 09-Jan-14 07:51:30

Maryz I have a DS between dd2 &3 He is not called Maximillian or Benjamin. (In fact not even close he is Conrad)

HoratiaDrelincourt Thu 09-Jan-14 08:01:15

DS1 would have been Catherine (Katy) Elizabeth

DS2 would have been Catherine (Kitty) Elizabeth

DS3 would have been Catherine (Kitty) Elizabeth Charlotte

We aren't having any more DC but when we get a cat she'll be known as Kitty grin

HoratiaDrelincourt Thu 09-Jan-14 08:03:06

And as it happens, my shadow name is one of DS2's middle names.

woodrunner Thu 09-Jan-14 08:08:45

DSs 1 & 2 would have been Sophia and Georgia probably.

treaclesoda Thu 09-Jan-14 08:20:50

DD would have been Eoin, or maybe Oliver
DS would have been Melissa or Leah

But the strange thing is that when we had DS, who is the younger of the two, we didn't even consider those names for him, even though we both love them. Did anyone else find that?

treaclesoda Thu 09-Jan-14 08:21:37

oh, sorry, I see that point has already been made by Maryz!

MotheringShites Thu 09-Jan-14 08:22:59

Had B/G DTs first so both names used! DS2 would have been Iris.

Fantail Thu 09-Jan-14 10:30:36

DD would have been Jonathan Albert

ImpOfDarkness Thu 09-Jan-14 13:07:51

DS would have been Naomi Aphra.

MummyBeerest Thu 09-Jan-14 13:17:27

DD would have been Liam. But after having her she's made friends with a lot of little Liams, so I don't think I'll
be using it.i

pygmy Thu 09-Jan-14 13:51:58

DS1 (12) Ella
DS2 (9) Poppy

Not at all keen on Ella anymore!

jazzyjenbo Thu 09-Jan-14 13:59:39

DramaAlpaca Thu 09-Jan-14 14:04:16

DS1 Emma
DS2 Emma
DS3 Emma

We never had an Emma!

Theonlyoneiknow Thu 09-Jan-14 14:08:02

jazzy i know girls called Rowan, would that be an option?

Dillydollydaydream Thu 09-Jan-14 14:08:04

Theonlyoneiknow Thu 09-Jan-14 14:08:33

jazzy i know girls called Rowan, would that be an option?

hawkmcqueen Thu 09-Jan-14 14:57:09

DS Alana Victoria
DD Tom or Max
Pending DD would have been Jack, Tom or Lucas

TheSporkforeatingkyriarchy Thu 09-Jan-14 15:40:04

DS2's name was the shadow name for DD1 and DD2 (as he is named after my grandfather).

Most of the names from earlier pregnancies trickled down, some new ones and some old ones discarded. But I created a giant name with DC1 and mostly it just shrank over time.

Anjou Thu 09-Jan-14 16:44:59

DS1 would probably have been Stella
DS2 would probably have been Freya or Tabitha

dobedobedo Thu 09-Jan-14 16:49:19

DS1 - Madison
DS2 (not born yet) - Libby

Rosencrantz Thu 09-Jan-14 16:59:30

DDs would have been Ross and Alexander.

Astarael Thu 09-Jan-14 20:02:26

My shadow name was Hugh but it was relegated to middle name position by the time my younger brother came along.

Ive only had one dd so far. In my head her shadow name was Evan but DH HATES it so in reality there was no boy's name and if she had been male some kind of fight to the death would have ensued in the delivery room.

thegreylady Fri 10-Jan-14 14:34:31

ds would have been Harriet and dd would have been James smile

pinkgirlythoughts Fri 10-Jan-14 21:15:04

MIL and FIL used DH's shadow name for SIL when she arrived 18 months later. Although the name is a unisex one, they'd picked it as their girl name, so chose not to use it for DH.

Interestingly (after reading Jazzy's post, the name is Rowen)

DS would have been Annabelle or Imogen

NotMeNoWay Fri 10-Jan-14 21:41:00

Have name changed for this as it will out me but,
Rhys Matthew- really glad we didn't have Rhys now.
Scarlett May - love Scarlett still but not sure about May.
Meg(an) Hanna- still love both.
Francis Mary - really wish I had got the chance to use this one.

No1 son would have been Mairi or Kirsty
No2 son would have been Mairi or Kirsty

tbh we never really puit that much thought into it's we only had possible girls names for No1 son though we were fairly sure he was a boy all the discussed boys names never really made it to possibles - he didn't have a name for 2 days.

We were 99% sure that 2nd baby was also a boy (no scan , just felt it) so we really didn't bother thinking of any names as we knew that we'd probably not go with anything we thought up but vaugley said that the girls choices still stood. He was a week and a half old before he was named.

Strokethefurrywall Sat 11-Jan-14 03:11:12

DS1 would have been Alannah or Dylan
DS2 (due in March) would have been Valentina or Darcy

sleepywombat Sat 11-Jan-14 06:27:10

Ds1 & 2 would've been Catherine and Alexa.

BikeRunSki Sat 11-Jan-14 06:30:42

Ds - didn't have a girls name alternative
DD - Frederick

sleepywombat Sat 11-Jan-14 06:31:34

Knew we'd have another boy, so to avoid disappointment, didn't even think about girls' names for ds3.

Ds1 would have been Amy
Ds2 would have been Sarah
Dd1 would have been Jack
Ds3 would have been Poppy
Dd2 would have been Joe.

JimbosJetSet Sat 11-Jan-14 06:38:14

DD would have been Adam.
DS would have been Caroline.

We'd gone off Adam by the time DS arrived, and we hadn't even considered Caroline when we had DD, which I'm a bit gutted about because I think I prefer it to her actual name grin

SanityClause Sat 11-Jan-14 06:44:17

I now wish I'd called DD1 Sylvia, Jimbo, and prefer it to her real name. We didn't consider it when I was choosing though, so maybe DH would have vetoed it, anyway.

i'm different to most on here then as DS 1 was going to be Kate up until the lat week when I changed it to Zoe, DS2 was going to be Zoe and DS3 was going to be Zoe Kate.....not very imaginative?

However the other shortlisted Boys names didn't come up for subsequent boys

ThePlEWhoLovedMe Sun 12-Jan-14 16:13:26

DS1 - Siane Lauren
DS2 - Sadie Rose Ann

MummyPig24 Sun 12-Jan-14 17:00:43

Ds would have been Holly.
Dd would have been Jack.

MotherOfInsomniacToddlers Sun 12-Jan-14 17:21:55

Dd would have been Fynn or Joshua
Ds would have been Rose

Gone off Fynn but would still consider Joshua or Rose for future dcs

TawdryTatou Sun 12-Jan-14 17:23:32

DS1 would have been Molly or Daisy.
DS2 would have been Imogen.

Rhubarbgarden Sun 12-Jan-14 18:42:32

Dd was going to be Gus. We used that for ds as we still loved it. If he'd been a girl he'd have been Ingrid or Simone.

QueenFuri Sun 12-Jan-14 18:51:17

DS1- Ellie
DS2- Ava

youarewinning Sun 12-Jan-14 18:56:40

DS was Sophia.

Ironically my closest friend and me met when our children were in nursery together.

Her DDs shadow names were my DS name and her DD2 is similar to my DS shadow name!

So we could have ended up with 2 children named the same!

I have a boy followed by a girl.
DS - Lucy or Alice
DD - we didn't really agree on any before she was born (and then took two days to name) but my short list included Sam, Linus, Casper and Sebastian.
We didn't name DD Lucy or Alice, we had gone off Alice as DS had a CD with 'Alice the Camel' on it, Lucy was DH's favourite, but it just didn't feel right, so we went with a different name that was vaguely mentioned by a friend's child after she was born!

Mutteroo Sun 12-Jan-14 19:30:59

Kept our boys name so won't list it, but had he been a girl we had Lorna & Alexandra

Grumblelion Sun 12-Jan-14 20:06:12

DD would have been Benjamin (Ben)

gwenniebee Sun 12-Jan-14 20:11:07

I would have been David.

DD would have been Alexander or Montgomery (Monty).

Skrifa Sun 12-Jan-14 20:18:43

DS1- Emma Lily
DS2- Sophie Jenna.
DS3- Ivy, Susannah or Zera.

So either an Emma, Sophie and Ivy, an Emma, Sophie and Susie or an Emma, Sophie and Zera.
