Isaac or Tobias?

I love them both. I really love Toby as a nickname but I've just had a call from my mum (who honestly doesn't have a problem with what we call our son) going "you can't call him Toby, I've just realised it sounds like Jobby!" We're Scottish and jobby (meaning poo) is a word quite commonly used where I live but I'm doubtful that anyone would actually pick up on it.

Any advice?

I love Tobias. Really don't like Isaac.

NewbieMcNewbie Sat 26-Oct-13 14:55:07

I love Toby.

I wouldn't bother with Tobias. Not keen on Isaac.

I prefer Isaac.

I know a Tobias it's lovely. I can't understand the obsession with nick names on here I loathe people messing with my name same goes for my DCs why take a nice name and piss about with it.

ReturnPlacenta Sat 26-Oct-13 15:58:11

Tobias is lovely. Even pretending to be Scottish I can't make it sound like jobby. grin

DaleyBump Sat 26-Oct-13 16:16:49

I think I'm leaning towards Tobias too smile

sonly do I really sound obsessed about nicknames? Did you honestly not think about what your child might end up having as a nickname? My parents didn't and it really fucked me over all through school. I can't think of any nicknames for Isaac and I still love it. I don't get people who assume things about others hmm

Bowlersarm Sat 26-Oct-13 16:18:47

Tobias nn Toby is lovely

DaleyBump Sat 26-Oct-13 16:19:01

Return did you really sit and say Toby in a Scottish accent? grin

I am Scottish and in my accent, Toby doesn't sound like Jobby. It's Toe-by not Tobby. But I prefer Isaac, lovely name, and the only nicknames I'm aware of are Zac (quite cool) or Ike (retro Anerican) so that helps too. (You definitely do have to consider nicknames IMO: you don't want your child to go through life with a name you hate, and that's what'll happen if there's a common nickname for their given name.)

I love both but much prefer Zac to Toby so for that reason Id say Isaac.

Love Isaac. Like Toby but not Tobias.

squoosh Sat 26-Oct-13 16:51:00

Isaac definitely.

Toby is a bit babyish. But no Toby doesn't rhyme with 'jobby', I don't think anyone would make that connection. They might think 'boaby' however!

TheGirlOnTheLanding Sat 26-Oct-13 16:59:22

Hahaha Squoosh @ boaby - haven't heard that for years!

QueenMedb Sat 26-Oct-13 17:15:54

Isaac is lovely. I love Tobias, but am not so keen on Toby as a nickname.

tobiasfunke Sat 26-Oct-13 17:26:43

Pick me. Pick me. However don't watch any episodes of Arrested Development or it might put you right off Tobias.

Clargo55 Sat 26-Oct-13 19:27:33

I love Tobias.

Iwaswatchingthat Sat 26-Oct-13 19:28:57

I love Isaac. I think it is sweet for a baby and manly for an adult. Perfect.

weneedtotalkaboutkettles Sat 26-Oct-13 19:42:27

Both lovely names.

DaleyBump Sat 26-Oct-13 19:50:40

I didn't think it sounded like jobby either grin it was just my mum who thought so then smile and I've heard boaby used as a nice nickname occasionally so that wouldn't really bother me.

Agh I love them both!

2children2cats Sat 26-Oct-13 20:28:46

They are both lovely names but Isaac wins for me, it has such a lovely meaning.

I know a Tobias and parents call him Bias for short

Alisvolatpropiis Mon 28-Oct-13 10:52:14

Though Isaac is nice too.

Whereisegg Mon 28-Oct-13 11:00:42

I have a Tobias.
We call him Tobias/Bias/Toby.
His best friend calls him Toby Wan Kenobe grin

TheBuskersDog Mon 28-Oct-13 11:13:12

I like Tobias but I don't know why have never liked the name Toby. I think maybe Tobias sounds dignified and Toby definitely doesn't, Toby sounds like a dog's name. I think of them as two different names really.

I know a grown up Toby and it just seems wrong. I also know an 8 yo Tobias who is always called Tobias, never Toby.

TerrorTremor Mon 28-Oct-13 20:46:46

My sister's dog is called Tobias (everyone calls him Toby though).

Ironically, she is thinking about calling her son Isaac.

Possible nn for Isaac I have heard though is Issy.

Which might sound a bit girlish.

caz05 Mon 28-Oct-13 20:47:38

I love the name Isaac as I have one, also like Toby but not keen on Tobias although you have to go with what you think and don't listen to other people too much

smithwillsam Tue 29-Oct-13 07:22:35

Isaac is such a beautiful name. I love the name. It's our second choice name if we have a boy.

Lucyadams184 Tue 29-Oct-13 10:26:11

I like both but I prefer Isaac.

JoJoManon Tue 29-Oct-13 12:58:15

Isaac personally. Plus I like Zach as a nickname more than Toby. Just an opinion.

lola0106 Tue 29-Oct-13 13:49:42

We are calling our son Toby grin I like Tobias but I know quite a few children with that name so are going for Toby x

DramaAlpaca Tue 29-Oct-13 13:52:47

Prefer Tobias/Toby.
