I would have been Luke after the Steve McQueen film, apparently.

Richard John Ralph. Phew!

My bio dad wanted to call me Candy! Good job my mum over ruled him.

Repeatedlydoingthetwist Wed 11-Sep-13 09:18:26

It's interesting how a name (or potential name in this case) can be so 'of an era'. I reckon the ages of a lot of the posters here could be guessed approximately by their answers?! I'm seeing loads of what I would class as 80's names here!

Blu Wed 11-Sep-13 09:21:07

It was considered sophisticated and unusual in that particular year.

elvisola Wed 11-Sep-13 09:29:13

Stephen. She saved it for my brother anyway.

I was lucky to get the boring 70's name I got, she was desperate to call me Pamela, my dad vetoed it. No offence to any Pamela's out there but I am so not one and was more than happy at school to disappear behind the 5 other Sarah's in my class.

VenusRising Wed 11-Sep-13 09:30:47

I like Elliot, but not too sure about Oswald (was that after O Mosley) it's a bit like Adolf.

A lot of Rorys - have you Welsh / Irish parents?

Ihatepeas Wed 11-Sep-13 09:46:36

Christopher William (william after my late grandfather)

chickensaladagain Wed 11-Sep-13 09:48:36

So would have been 1 of four in my class

Instead I had a ridiculously common girls name so was one of 5!

DaisyBD Wed 11-Sep-13 09:57:55

Matthew John, then my younger sister would have been Matthew John, then the twins would have been Matthew and John but they were both girls. My mother only wanted boys hmm

MissHC Wed 11-Sep-13 10:07:37

Thomas. 6 years later my brother came along and they completely changed their minds.

fiishfingers Wed 11-Sep-13 10:24:48

Hate the idea of being called Dick or Johnny so am very pleased to be female!

TwoTearsInABucket Wed 11-Sep-13 11:19:10

Marc or Oliver.

If I was Marc I would have been one of seven in my class. As it is I got a name that I only encountered for the first time on a French exchange.

birdofthenorth Wed 11-Sep-13 11:53:31

theginganinja Wed 11-Sep-13 11:55:22

Kerry hmm I'm so glad I swerved that one. I've never known a single bloke called Kerry.

Theresadogonyourballs Wed 11-Sep-13 13:11:10

Colin. Fortunately they came to their senses when my brother came along and called him James. Lucky escape!

Wigeon Wed 11-Sep-13 13:14:43

Richard. Weirdly my DH's first name is Richard (although he's known by his second name). And even more weirdly, his younger sister has the same name as me, so presumably his parents would have called him that name if he was a girl.

So DH would have had my name if he had been a girl and I would have had his name. Odd!

Wigeon Wed 11-Sep-13 13:16:03

Littlecherublegs - those two names are my DH's first and second names, in that order! Were you born in the late 1970s too?!

Nathan. Same for both of my sisters.

Yoghurty Wed 11-Sep-13 18:36:45

Maximilian Alexander then my Mums long maiden name, then surname :/ Quite pleased that didn't happen, would've been a nightmare to fit on forms.

aquashiv Wed 11-Sep-13 18:57:57

Mum said if I'd been a boy I'd have been adopted out in case I turned out like my dad, even after explaining that having male genitalia would not automatically make me like my father and my older sister is EXACTLY like him she still sticks to this.

In the past she has said she'd have called me jason. My dad would have called me jeff. 'Luckily' my twat of a half brother got that instead.

I love my girl name, luckily while it screams 80's when my middle name is included my first is actually biblical.

AintNobodyGotTimeFurThat Wed 11-Sep-13 20:35:07

I think my parents wanted to nickname me Stef, no matter what. smile

MrsDibble Thu 12-Sep-13 14:44:44

I would have been George, which is fine now, but when I was at school (state) would have been a disaster! A boy called George would have had no chance at my school!
