I would love some help coming up with a name for DD2 please!
Our surname starts with H and is one syllable.

our criteria is:

No names starting with S or H
2 or 3 syllables
does not end in an ee sound (like Sophie, Mary, Katie)

the middle name will be Gill or Gillian for family reasons (hands tied on this one)

Our two favourite names atm are Imogen (which I've gone off recently)
Georgia (which dh has gone off since royal baby)
Pippa (until our polish friend laughed at us as surname can sound rude)

any other suggestions are MOST welcome!

Elise
Alicia
Allanah
Denice
Verity
Vanessa
Vivienne
Tamara

Can you give us some examples of names he does like, by way of guidance?

<bitterly remembers DH's list of possibles: 'Samantha. Errm, or Rosie?'
Both perfectly good names but not in fact the only names in girldom...>

NotYoMomma Fri 06-Sep-13 14:00:07

honestly if it was up to me I would call her Any number of names on this thread

freya
Merryn
esme
Georgia
Clara

are all names I have mentioned to him.

his initial suggestions were Stephanie and Kayleigh and he seems a bit stuck in 1980s sad

he named dd1 though (Sophie) so if he just says no to everything for this one I will bust some balls.

Lancelottie Fri 06-Sep-13 14:04:26

<narrows eyes> Have you in fact kidnapped my DH? Stephanie made it onto his list for DD after much thought as well.

Bet he likes Rebecca, Rachel, Debbie and Karen.

NotYoMomma Fri 06-Sep-13 14:06:33

he does!!!!

he (and mil) are also why Gillian is the middle name. I'm pushing for Gill as it is a bit more bareable. I love mil but not the name haha

Thumbwitch Fri 06-Sep-13 14:09:30

No S or H
2 or 3 syllables
no --ee sound (and yet your DH came up with Stephanie and Kayleigh?)
No U names either, tbh, or her initials will be UGH! Even A (AGH?) could be a bit odd.
And I wouldn't do J either, not with Gill(ian) as a middle name.

Marilla
Charlotte
Primrose
Clarissa
Elena
Eloise
Fiona (although that's been rather ruined by Shrek, hasn't it sad )
Fenella
Margaret

NotYoMomma Fri 06-Sep-13 14:16:39

I know Thumb!

it isn't a lot of criteria and for good reason (avoid same initial as surname as dd1)

avoid same sounding ending as dd1 and... like ALL Of her friends

and he is just beyond useless. I dont want to pick a name he hates, but he now says he hates eyerything!!!

and it is my turn dammit! lol he is rruining it

Theas18 Fri 06-Sep-13 14:19:52

Imogen Gillian is just a mouthful of G sounds I'm afriad..

OutragedFromLeeds Fri 06-Sep-13 14:24:47

Nothing wrong with Rebecca, Rachel or Karen. They fit your criteria, not too current, won't be one of 10 in the class, not try hard. I also like Stephanie (not with Sophie though). I think you should give your DH more credit on the naming front wink.

I love Georgia, but Georgia Gillian is terrible!

You could try a bit of psychology on him - go for something that he REALLY hates, push push push for it and then when he's about ready to cry, say "well we could have Clara [or whatever your favourite is] instead then, I suppose" and he'll probably fall on your neck in gratitude.
grin

everlong Fri 06-Sep-13 14:34:00

He named Dd1. Enough said. Now it's your turn,

Kayleigh is terrible. Stephanie not much better.

Lancelottie Fri 06-Sep-13 14:51:57

I agree there's nowt wrong with Karen, Rebecca (though round here you WILL have ten of those in a class) or Rachel. I just think it isn't actually essential to name your daughter after your primary school classmates when there are other names out there.

Try Laura on him. He's probably heard of that, and it goes well with Sophie.

Oops, sorry, it ends in a ee sound... I just always think of this as similar to Pippa.

Stephanie or Kayleigh?

I have no words! You are doomed OP.

(just don't choose Pippa, it has filthy meanings in about 5 languages)

So...?

Ruth Gillian May H
Vivienne Lara Gill H
Elizabeth Gillian Kate H
Faith Phoebe Gillian H

Oh and I'd consider 2 middle names we did this to use a family name that didn't fit.

Eg Georgia Kate Gillian Hunt
Or Imogen Victoria Gillian Hunt

Yes more if a mouthful but means the middle name, (which isn't very nice!!) has less bearing on the name you'll actually be using.

Lancelottie Sun 08-Sep-13 09:45:02

I think Beattie has a good solution with Charlotte Gillian -- it flows nicely and sounds good with Sophie, and even Neanderthals OP's DH will have heard of it.

sashh Sun 08-Sep-13 11:50:03

Sorry but 'Imogen Gillian' - is like a character from a kids book, a friend of Pippa Longstocking (Pippa is rude in many languages).

Personally I think a definite end of word sound goes better with Gillian as a middle name, so

Pauline Gillian - no
Paula Gillian - no
Paulette Gillian - sounds better.

BTW I don't particularly like any of the names above, just the sound of the last letter with Gillian.

Maybe

Elizabeth
Bernadette

Bearandcub Sun 08-Sep-13 15:12:44

Philippa?

Biscuitsneeded Sun 08-Sep-13 22:29:32

Kayleigh is ghastly but Stephanie is a lovely name. Timeless and classy, I think.

Lancelottie Mon 09-Sep-13 08:32:03

...yes, but it starts with S and ends with -ie!

If you have to have Gillian, I'd rule out any J names and anything ending in n, as the echo sounds odd.

I would suggest Iris to go with Sophie, but then she'd be IrisH, which doesn't work.

Can you acquire an offended relative of your own (preferably called Clara, Merryn, Freya or something close to them...) and insist that their feelings would be terribly hurt if they aren't included?

PeacockPlumage Mon 09-Sep-13 08:42:56

Siblings of Sophies that I know:

Tamsin Gillian
Harriet Gillian
Ava Gillian
Aoife Gillian
May Gillian
Nadia Gillian

I think Gillian is a pretty hard name to jave to wotk on. I would be v tempted to have an additional middle name tbh.

telsa Mon 09-Sep-13 09:29:10

Vanessa, Yvette, Yvonne, Bridget, Cora, Tamara, Amanda

NotYoMomma Mon 09-Sep-13 18:55:46

haha someone suggested Imogen Victoria Gillian - thank you! DH suggested this himself as Victoria is my name wink outs self

that is the front runner but I am also liking so many of these options! I wish I had free reign, I am considering taking it anyway and attempting the teary just given birth name suggestion!

I asked him for a list (im due next month!) of his top 5 names and he has not been helpful at all. angry

MrsDibble Wed 11-Sep-13 22:11:08

I think Freya works really well with Gillian as middle name and as a sister for Sophie.

He can't not have heard of it - he's heard of Friday, hasn't he? Friday is named after the goddess Freya.

Lancelottie Thu 12-Sep-13 09:52:50

I'd go at it the other way round, OP, if he can't think of five names you don't hate. Why does he get to veto yours, whereas you need to pick one of his?

Give him your top five instead (top ten if you're feeling kind). If he claims to hate them all, he at least needs to justify why.

It still rankles a teeny bit that DH vetoed Phoebe, Verity and Felicity for DD, but whenever we meet a child called one of those he'll say 'That's a nice name. DD would have suited that...'
