Just found out we are having a BOY {eekkk} really thought it would be another girl.

DH and I can't agree at all on boys names. DH likes James, I like Toby. We need a compromise, can you help?

Thank you for the congrats!

Annoying DH isn't having Jude at all. Also it doesn't really go with DD's name. Names I like but DH doesn't are: Monty, Rex, Xarvier those types of names. Basically pretty much all of Fingers list DH has turned his nose up at smile

We had Kit down several years ago for DD. I am not a huge fan of Christopher, Christian or Kaster. So not sure if we could pull it off a just 'Kit'

I like Oliver and Thomas however too popular. Miles and Elliot dont do it for me. Have gone off Arthur recently.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions. DH has said no to every name I have suggested. Seriously impossible!

SmallTorch Thu 05-Sep-13 14:14:44

Actually I do know a little Joby! He's 3, quite posh.

MortifiedAdams Thu 05-Sep-13 15:06:13

What has he suggested?

daughterofafarmer Thu 05-Sep-13 15:49:44

Mortified Only James! That's its. I tell you....arghhhh

He's know said no to Kit too, so literally no names.

He doesn't like Toby and I think James is perfectly nice just a bit popular!

mrsyattering Thu 05-Sep-13 15:52:37

I immediately thought Jude.

Jude is a flat no.

If your only complaint about James is the popularity then James it should be.

How many baby James' do you know? Have you ever actually heard James being shouted in the playground?

girliefriend Thu 05-Sep-13 20:03:28

James is a good, solid, will never date or embarrass anyone name so agree with above post of your only objection in its popular I would go for it (for what its worth I haven't come across any james ever and am sure there has never been one in any of dds classes - now in yr 3)

Unless your dh is called James himself i would go for that grin

girl and * mortified* You raise excellent points, incredibly valid. Noted. Great friend has a James, he's only 10 wks or so. However they live overseas so unlikely we'll see them that much over the next few years.
Jamie day to day?

Hmm responses from DH: Nicholas, Daniel, Lawrence.

Flat no: Andrew, Ralph, Luca, Rafe, Max, Joseph (in fact anything Josh or Jake is no) Robin, Rufus, Cassius

Already used by family or very close friends: Monty, Otto, Louis, James, Caspar, Hugo inc Hugh.

DD is a 'H' so keen not to repeat. Saying that I do like Hamish I am Scottish

Thank you for the suggestions.

daughterofafarmer Thu 05-Sep-13 20:54:48

George is a no too. As he doesn't like it.

Although in our house hed get Jim Jameramalam. We always seem to lengthen names blush

daughterofafarmer Thu 05-Sep-13 21:05:23

Yes it is so but we live in SW England, so not really popular. And it's about the only Scottish name DH can pronounce grin Lachlan is hysterical, he just can't get it.

Duncan is my ex. Douglas and Fergus are no's. Love Magnus but's never going to happen. can't use Findlay as it doesn't go with our surname. Sister has a Angus. Rest are no's!

Frangepani Thu 05-Sep-13 21:53:16

James was our favourite boys' name and my husband's grandfather's name, so that's what we chose. When our longed-for only one was born we started calling him Jamie right away - it seemed to suit him as a baby and a wee boy. I remember at the time we thought he might prefer his 'proper' name of James when he got older. But he's still Jamie at 21 & 6 ft 3! Also our Scottish surname is one syllable and Jamie goes well with it! His middle name is Ian, after my Dad.

enormouse Thu 05-Sep-13 22:03:48

Hi daughter hope you and baby are doing well (I read the jan 2014 thread). We're having a boy too and can't agree on a name, (must be Celtic-ish as we have a Ewan already and preferably not shortenable). DP wants another -an ending name as we all have one.
I like -

Thank you for all the comments, apologies I have been away for a few days R&R without DH and DD. Bliss.

enormose {waves} hello, yes much better now. Thank god.

I have come round to James, however still looking that 'perfect' name grin DH will not move on Toby. So it looks like I'll have to give in come the end of the year.

Think James Lachlan Surname?

JamieandtheMagicTorch Mon 09-Sep-13 17:13:58

Your DH has more conservative taste than you. These are nice:

Don't give in - with to find one you both love. It can happen

sorry - the "with to" wasn't meant to be there in my last post

daughterofafarmer Tue 10-Sep-13 08:27:08

DH said last night he wasn't 100% set on James, just it's the only name at the moment he can suggest hmm so at least maybe we could find something we both love.

However Honor and James does sound good!

Seriously I despair!

Dominic

JamieandtheMagicTorch Tue 10-Sep-13 21:30:47

It is v hard. I have 2 boys and DH vetoed all my suggestions first time. There was ONE name he suggested and I had not thought of before and immediately loved. That just left DS2 to name when the whole rigmarole started again. DS2 should be Matthew ...

daughterofafarmer Tue 10-Sep-13 21:36:46

Thanks Jo

We already have a Dominic in the family and Jasper is a no from me smile I think it's a great name just for some reason it makes my teeth inch blush

Jamie I think it doesn't help that we really thought it was a girl. So really stupidly didn't think we'd need a name. Good luck with Matthew!

JamieandtheMagicTorch Tue 10-Sep-13 21:42:41

... daughter. He's 10, and not Matthew.

Fredrick James

Flossiechops Tue 10-Sep-13 21:56:02

Sounds like he is fixed on James otherwise he wouldn't say no to so many other names. Why not ask him to come up with his top 3? Dh was determined to have a Welsh name for our ds. I really wasn't convinced with his chosen name throughout my pregnancy but by the time he was born Dylan just fitted his name perfectly!

What about
Robert (rob / robbie/ bobby)
Frederick ( Fred / Freddie / rick)
Jules
Jonathan
John

CoolStoryBro Tue 10-Sep-13 22:02:13

I think James is a lovely name and I don't know any little James' at all. Lots and lots and lots of big James' though. Which is why we could never use it, as half my ex boyfriends were called James or a variant of.

You both have to love the name. I let my dh chose the name for my ds and it still doesn't work for me, although I adore my little boy. My girls have traditional Victorian names from my side and my ds has what can only be described as a really Middle Eastern name from my dh. My dcs names don't match. Apart from our stupid surnamesmile

Brodie
Orlando
Alexander (here is commonly abbreviated to Sasha)
Leo
Brian Lara Surname

daughterofafarmer Thu 12-Sep-13 18:27:44

floss I agree. However it's a joint decision and I'm not budging Mature

Can't use Frederick as much as I love Freddie. Is already been used within the family.

Robert - poss mn

Hamish is on the list. Would it be odd having Honor and Hamish?

Lawrence I have suggested but DH isn't convinced.
Hunter - good I wish I was this brave, don't think we could pull it off?

Brodie - warming to it. However I do know 1 and when he was name my father laughted for days!

Leo - Flat no from DH.

Orlando - same as Hunter

Thank you all

daughterofafarmer Sun 15-Sep-13 12:51:01

Night you ave hit the nail on the head. I see Honor as being quite a strong punchy name, known but not well know. Still gutted about Juno, hugely so. So only one thing for it....DC3

I do quite like Lucas (is it popular?)

Campbell is good, being Scottish I do like it.

Names like Finn etc don't work with our surname. Max works well, However it's the only person DH every punch was called Max grin he was 10 Milo is a but too hippy for us, however I do like it.

daughterofafarmer Sun 15-Sep-13 12:55:57

Posted too soon...
What do you guys think of Honor and Tristan?

fuzzpig Sun 15-Sep-13 13:01:48

That's funny I just came on to suggest Tristan. I love it.

Also love Elias.

Frikadellen Sun 15-Sep-13 13:25:28

Conrad
Bertram (Bertie)
Peter

I do like Nicholas and I dont see to many around

ChickenLickenSticken Sun 15-Sep-13 13:34:49

I don't like Tristan but that's only because I know a horrible Tristan.

fuzzpig Sun 15-Sep-13 13:46:46

It's a shame when that happens isn't it Chicken. There's loads of names I had to rule out due to dodgy associations.

For example I love the names Christian and Anastasia but E L James has somewhat ruined them for me hmm

nightcircus Sun 15-Sep-13 22:03:58

Don't think Lucas is that popular.
Tristan- I knew one who was kind but wet...think it could grow on me though

Some more names:-

Jenson
Bertrand
Rex
Jared
Xavier
Atticus
Emmett
Ezra
Gabriel
Rafe

ChickenLickenSticken Sun 15-Sep-13 22:54:20

Yes it is a shame. I really like my ex's name but that's obviously a no-go. We're not in touch but are friends on fb so would be weird, let alone hubby's reaction!

Piddlepuddle Sun 15-Sep-13 23:00:01

What about Jago, the Cornish version of James?

VivaLeThrustBadger Sun 15-Sep-13 23:04:14

Jonty?

itried Sun 15-Sep-13 23:06:27

Laro, Jude?

daughterofafarmer Tue 17-Sep-13 13:18:36

Thank you all for the suggestions, annoyingly quite a number of names suggested have already been used eg: Jensen and Gabriel on reflection I don't think we'd pick these names.

I used to work with a Jago, nice guy just a bit odd. Name association has ruined that for me.

Jude is an utter no go. It really isn't our style of name. I could get DH to agree to Juno but not Jude. I do like Xavier.

daughterofafarmer Tue 17-Sep-13 13:19:57

Currently my list is:

Tristan
Toby
Hamish
Alexander
Kit not short for anything

daughterofafarmer Sat 21-Sep-13 17:53:58

Hamish is off the list and Johnny possibly John but not hugely keen on that more to the top of the list.
