Eloise or Eloise? (or other suggestions)

We like the name, but can't decide on the spelling smile

Potential middle names are Violet or Grace.

Other suggestions welcome, though nothing beginning with 'J'

TangfasticMrFoxalastic Sun 25-Aug-13 07:33:47

Damn auto correct, I checked the text body but not the title grin

The question is Eloise or Elouise? smile

BikeRunSki Sun 25-Aug-13 07:39:50

I think the standard spelling is Eloise, which I prefer, but Elouise also makes sense in that it is not "creative".

Not Grace though..... it seems to have become such a common middle name as to be completly indistinctive iyswim.

Eloise Violet is nice though.

Sunnysummer Sun 25-Aug-13 07:40:19

This is one where autocorrect is correct... Has to be Eloise, the other one looks like a misspelling to me.

I like Eloise Violet, it's a nice spiky contrast to the softer sound of the fIrst name smile Grace is pretty too, but currently seems like a more common 'filler' middle name (along with Rose and Mae).

num3onway Sun 25-Aug-13 07:43:39

Eloise is so pretty. I also really like elodie but oh said no!

Not keen on violet and grace is quite common now but if its what you like go for it!

TangfasticMrFoxalastic Sun 25-Aug-13 07:44:23

Thanks, good point made about autocorrect and Grace smile

BetterWithCheese Sun 25-Aug-13 08:22:18

I had Eloise Violet on my longshort list but my husband has vetoed Eloise sad It's a beautiful name smile

LittleBearPad Sun 25-Aug-13 08:26:46

Go with autocorrect.

Elouise looks like it could be said E-Louise.

Eloise Grace is very pretty

Seaweedy Sun 25-Aug-13 08:26:48

I find the combination of Eloise and Violet difficult to say and to look at because of the recurrence of 'i' and 'o', but reversed, if you see what I mean.

Eloise, definitely. Elouise would be pronounced entirely differently, surely?

BabyBrainMom Sun 25-Aug-13 09:03:58

Prefer Eloise

How about Eloise May instead?

LadyLech Sun 25-Aug-13 12:48:00

I know 4 little girls called Eloise. All spell their name this way.

Ihatepeas Sun 25-Aug-13 14:00:31

Eloise Violet is gorgeous!!!!

Linguaphile Sun 25-Aug-13 14:14:14

I really like Eloise Violet.

picnicbasketcase Sun 25-Aug-13 14:16:09

Eloise - Elouise looks wrong and the I is entirely redundant.

TangfasticMrFoxalastic Sun 25-Aug-13 16:17:56

Wow thanks, that's pretty conclusive! And was my preferred spelling too so even better wink

I shall pass on the verdict smile

picnicbasketcase Sun 25-Aug-13 16:19:16

^ That should have said the 'U', not the 'I', of course. The I is very important smile

Thumbwitch Sun 25-Aug-13 16:22:38

Good ol' autocorrect, got it completely right for once! Glad you're taking the hint wink

I love the name Eloise. I agree that Grace is very popular at the moment but as it's a middle name, does that really matter? Still, if you like that kind of name, what about:
Eloise Faith
Eloise Hope

cookielove Sun 25-Aug-13 16:22:59

A friend of mine just had a baby abd called her Elouise. To me it looks odd and much prefer the other correct spelling. smile

racingheart Sun 25-Aug-13 16:23:29

Eloise is really pretty. Not sure it goes with Violet - it's the o-ee i-o vowels that sound a bit odd. I like Grace, even if it is popular. Lovely meaning and sounds pretty with Eloise.

riskit4abiskit Sun 25-Aug-13 16:25:11

Heloise is a medieval name I will throw into the mix.

I like eloise as a spelling better than the other way

How are you allpronounincing Eloise? I say elouise, I wouldn't spell it that way, but its the way I would say it.

Mucho prefer violet as a MN too!

ChasedByBees Sun 25-Aug-13 16:37:34

Eloise is lovely. Elouise sounds like an online version of Louise.

Thumbwitch Sun 25-Aug-13 16:41:41

TangfasticMrFoxalastic Sun 25-Aug-13 16:54:30

I'd say it as thumbwitch above. Just need to convince dh on the spelling now

Not sure about Heloise, doesn't quite have the same ring to it, imo, but still nice. I suspect we'll go back and forth on middle names smile

Thumb, how do you say Louise? Sorry I think I'm being thick today!

SunnyIntervals Sun 25-Aug-13 16:59:56

Thumbwitch Sun 25-Aug-13 17:03:09

Glaikit - Loo-weez. smile

Ahh! I see now!! My Scottish accent strikes again! Oh and oo!! grin

liquidstate Sun 25-Aug-13 21:02:34

Surely Elouise would be pronounced El-oo-weez. I much prefer Ell-o-weez.

Also I prefer the Faith and Hope suggestions for a middle name.

Heloise is my DHs favourite girls name after I had vetoed Kimberly

sunnybobs Sun 25-Aug-13 21:55:01

What about Elodie? Also lovely & slightly more unusual at the moment

zippey Sun 25-Aug-13 22:00:32

Have you thought about Louise?

MissCalamity Sun 25-Aug-13 22:07:55

Oooh, I love Eloise. Definitely top girls name for DC2, we'd have the middle name as Catherine as it's my mum & sister's middle name.
My middle name is Louise, that wouldn't go down well!

HoneyDragon Sun 25-Aug-13 22:07:57

Thumbwitch has it spot on.

ems1910 Mon 26-Aug-13 01:11:51

No u, just Eloise. Definitely with Violet as a middle name.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee Mon 26-Aug-13 01:21:21

I think, out of the two, Grace is much nicer with Eloise (it has to be that spelling). But I do like Faith Hope etc instead. Definitely not Violet - it doesn't run on right.

WeAreSeven Mon 26-Aug-13 01:31:44

Well, thank God for that. I kept looking from Eloise to Eloise trying to spot the difference and wondered if I was developing late-onset dyslexia!

I had never seen or heard of Elouise before. Just seems wrong.

AberdeenAngusina Mon 26-Aug-13 06:17:02

I think Eloise Violet flows beautifully. Perhaps it's an accent thing, because I'm baffled by comments that it sounds awkward. I have a Scottish accent, and Eloise Violet sounds lovely.

Eloise Grace doesn't sound quite so good to me because of the repeated "s" sound at the end of each name.

TangfasticMrFoxalastic Mon 26-Aug-13 10:01:10

Thanks there are some really good points, the important ones being you all agree with my spelling wink

I'm leaning more towards Violet tbh. I'm due next Monday, so not long now I suspect smile

Frikadellen Mon 26-Aug-13 15:04:23

Another preferring for Eloise But will just throw in DD2's name of Eloisa just to stir a bit smile

Eloisa Violet is gorgeous imo

noodlebum Tue 27-Aug-13 14:07:27

Eloise! Violet is a nice middle name.

JamieandtheMagicTorch Tue 27-Aug-13 14:51:12

JamieandtheMagicTorch Tue 27-Aug-13 14:52:03

I prefer Violet

Eloise will inevitably be shortened to Ellie, which is rather popular

madmayday Tue 27-Aug-13 15:14:31

I'm an Eloise Anne, which depending on your surname, flows pretty well! grin

I prefer Violet to Grace and Eloise to be honest.

However I'll also thrown Elise into the mix because I think that is pretty.

Out the names you have said I think Eloise Grace sounds better than Eloise Violet even if I don't prefer it.

throw not thrown!

mamalovebird Tue 27-Aug-13 15:20:51

Eloise - this my my DDs middle name. I love it.

minipie Wed 28-Aug-13 14:44:29

I do think a one syllable mn works best (unless you have a one syllable surname) but so many are overused at the moment. How about

Eloise Fleur
Eloise Blythe
Eloise Ruth
Eloise Anne (I bet Ann or Anne will be the next Rose/May of middle names though)
Eloise Faye
Eloise Beth

HoneyDragon Wed 28-Aug-13 16:40:33

Eloise does NOT get shortened to Ellie, as the average Eloise comes with a highly efficient glare of death.

DizzyPurple Wed 28-Aug-13 16:45:51

I like Eloise Violet too. Sounds great!

JamieandtheMagicTorch Wed 28-Aug-13 17:51:38

Honeydragon grin

lade Wed 28-Aug-13 22:18:06

Ha Ha, Honeydragon - I take it you've met my Eloise then grin.

Of all the Eloises I have ever met (6 in total - I'm a teacher, 15 years of teaching). One has been called Ellie, one is sometimes called Ella and the rest are strictly Eloise with no other nickname at all.

HoneyDragon Wed 28-Aug-13 23:32:53

My Mil is the only person in the history of EVER, who may call me Ellie. She's earned the right and its done as an affectionate tease.

Anyone else has only ever tried to call me Ellie once. grin

Oddly enough, the other Eloise's I have met are equally as previous about their names blush

I am curious to know how old madmay is. I don't meet many grown up Eloise's.

HoneyDragon Wed 28-Aug-13 23:33:17

*precious, not previous

TangfasticMrFoxalastic Sat 07-Sep-13 07:14:59

Thanks for all the opinions and suggestions, I just wanted to give an update.

She is officially Eloise Violet smile
