Is it boring?

Me and hubby have long been idly chatting about potential baby's names and most of his I have vetoed initially but then found them growing on me.

One name he mentioned was Zoe and I immediately ruled it out and said it was too boring. However, after weeks of thinking about it, I now actually really like it!!! I'm still worried that it is a bit plain though?

Our surname only has 1 would the name seem too short??

Bowlersarm Sat 24-Aug-13 16:51:21

No because Zoe is two syllables.

How many letters in your last name?

Bowlersarm Sat 24-Aug-13 16:52:19

Sorry that was unclear....I mean I don't think it is too short.

Writerwannabe83 Sat 24-Aug-13 16:53:19

Our surname is Wise. I'm just worried it doesn't sound right??

redcaryellowcar Sat 24-Aug-13 16:56:20

Think its very nice, I prefer shorter names which can't be made too much shorter, so would be looking for something no longer than two syllables for dc2.

BikeRunSki Sat 24-Aug-13 16:57:16

My sister is Zoe and our family nane is only one syllable. Never been a problem. As long as you have something other than Eve/May in the middle. My sister has 2 x 3 syllable middle names .

Bowlersarm Sat 24-Aug-13 16:57:17

I think it's ok.

Could you give her two middle names to give her name more interest ie so she has three initials then Wise

Z G E Wise for example.

Or a long middle name like Elizabeth so when she writes her name in full the whole thing is quite long.

I sympathise as we had the same problem, and I am drawn to short names.

Writerwannabe83 Sat 24-Aug-13 17:01:46

Thanks Redcar, I like it because it is simple but also really pretty. I'm not one for 'showy' names but don't want a dull one either.

Middle name would probably be Elise: pronounced with the 'Lise' sound rhyming with 'Peace'.

Writerwannabe83 Sat 24-Aug-13 17:02:54

I also like Caroline as a middle name too...

Zoe Elise Caroline Wise.

Perhaps too long now? smile

ZolaBuddleia Sat 24-Aug-13 17:03:32

I think with Elise you'd be constantly twitchy about people saying Eleez.

For me, Zoe doesn't work with Wise because of the repeated Z sound. [so wouldn't work with mispronounced Elise either]

I love short names.

Writerwannabe83 Sat 24-Aug-13 17:05:06

That's a good point about the 'Z' sounds - maybe that's why it sounded a bit off when I kept saying it to myself....

Bowlersarm Sat 24-Aug-13 17:08:04

I think you're over thinking it. Have now said Zoe Wise over and over and I think it sounds good.

StrawberryMojito Sat 24-Aug-13 17:08:34

It's also the double w sound that makes it sound awkward.

Bowlersarm Sat 24-Aug-13 17:09:01

Do you like Chloe?

StrawberryMojito Sat 24-Aug-13 17:10:31

I mean Zo-e gets pronounced Zo-wee so Zoe Wise doesn't roll off the tongue.

EnjoyEverySandwich Sat 24-Aug-13 17:11:17

I like it, it has an almost palindromic sound, if that makes sense. There is the buzzy Z sound at the start and at the end, and the W sound repeated in the middle (there's an "invisible" W in Zo-e).

TallulahBetty Sat 24-Aug-13 17:55:58

Chloe? Zara?

nooka Sat 24-Aug-13 18:12:36

I think it works, but not with Elise in the middle. I think it scans really well with Caroline though. Z is a very cool initial - Z C Wise, Zoe C Wise, Zoe Wise. Not boring at all, and Zoe isn't that widely used at the moment.

We have a one syllable surname and dd and I have three syllable names, ds and dh have two syllables. All the names work, in fact even the children's nicknames rhyming with our surname (not intentional) isn't a problem

FobblyWoof Sat 24-Aug-13 18:28:41

I really love Zoe. It's on our shortlist for girls. I think it's a good, solid name and goes lovely with your last name.

Zoe Caroline Wise is lovely.

I would miss out Elise - though it is a lovely name - Elise Wise is too matchy, written down (and if pronounced "wrongly" audibly too).

TenthMuse Sat 24-Aug-13 20:20:00

Zoe's my name and I love it! Mine's a one-syllable surname too, and I think it works fine. Agree that it needs a more 'solid' sounding middle name than Elise though, otherwise there are too many vowel sounds. Zoe Caroline/Zoe Catherine etc. work much better I think.

If it helps, I'm a teacher and have only come across two or three primary-aged Zoes in five years - so definitely not too common or boring.

EnjoyEverySandwich Sat 24-Aug-13 20:27:26

And Zoe means 'life' - which together with 'wise' has got to be a lucky name!

delilah89 Sat 24-Aug-13 21:48:51

I think it sounds brilliant!!!

Writerwannabe83 Sun 25-Aug-13 09:36:46

Arr thanks everyone! The name Elise was only in there to pacify the husband, I have no problems getting rid of it smile

I will definitely put in on our list of potentials then.

Unfortunately I don't like Chloe, I feel it has been done to the death!

BlueStarsAtNight Sun 25-Aug-13 09:42:42

I love the way it looks written down, but I do think Zoe Wise is slightly awkward to say with the repeated 'w' sounds. I think that once you've said it often enough though it doesn't feel weird at all. Caroline works really well asa mn too smile

Writerwannabe83 Sun 25-Aug-13 11:58:43

I wish he liked the name Diana - it must be due a comeback?!

EaudeChl0e Sun 25-Aug-13 12:08:29

I like it! Elise is not so nice. Although I like Eloise, and Elsa. Zoe is lovely. You can't go wrong with that.

EnjoyEverySandwich Sun 25-Aug-13 12:46:50

Diana is one of those names that has never been in or out of fashion. Properly timeless.

Bowlersarm Sun 25-Aug-13 12:52:03

Much prefer Zoe to Diana.

Think Zoe works from newborn to pensioner.

In my head my first image of Zoe would be of a cool, pretty teen, or maybe 20 something.

I don't think of a Diana like that, and can't imagine a child called Diana. Of course, if I knew one it may seem more natural.

DanicaJones Sun 25-Aug-13 16:20:47

It's not my favourite

southeastdweller Sun 25-Aug-13 22:05:15

Boring? No, it has connotations of a free spirit, someone who's open minded and likes to travel for me. Maybe it's become too linked with Zoe Ball in my mind, I don't know. What interesting names is your hubby preferring?

It's a classic name, class-less and it's not overused and never has been and would go nicely with your surname. I say go for it.

TheBleedinObvious Mon 26-Aug-13 06:04:59

I like it.

But agree Zoe Elise doesn't go.

How about Zoe elisabeth?

Themarriedwoman Mon 26-Aug-13 06:20:07

Zoe Diana Wise?
I think that sounds nice

sparklingstars Mon 26-Aug-13 06:28:39

It sounds good to me.

Writerwannabe83 Tue 27-Aug-13 11:05:41

What about Emily? Is that boring?

I asked my husband if he like Amelie but he said no hmm

MortifiedAdams Tue 27-Aug-13 11:08:13

Ooh I love Zoe Wise! It has a lovely ring to it. I like the similar sound in the names and think it is perfect.

Zoe Emily Wise?

MortifiedAdams Tue 27-Aug-13 11:09:17

Zoe Wannamaker is smashing! She alone would.make me want to use Zoe.

I also like Zoey (as in Deschanel), think its pronounced Zoo-ey

ThursdayLast Tue 27-Aug-13 11:14:51

Zoe Wise is a beautiful name smile

Writerwannabe83 Tue 27-Aug-13 11:22:04

smile smile It is definitely our front runner.....

I'm going to go and Google Zoe Wannamaker.... grin

ThursdayLast Tue 27-Aug-13 11:24:04

Zoe Emily Wise.

Classic but feminine and simple.

Good choice!

Writerwannabe83 Tue 27-Aug-13 12:04:10

I just spoke to my husband about it and he wasn't too impressed that I'd scrapped Elise! Then he tells me that he would want it spelt Elyse!! I told him absolutely NO WAY! grin

We don't have a single boys name on our list.... hmm

ThursdayLast Tue 27-Aug-13 12:19:39

Hahahahaha, I presumed you knew it's a girl!

Poor little lad! Still, I bet he'll be the only male Zoe in his class wink

Writerwannabe83 Tue 27-Aug-13 12:28:54

No, lol.

I'm convinced we're going to have a girl but he is certain it will be a boy grin

At least if he is right it means I can avoid the whole Elise/Elyse issue smile

Grumblelion Tue 27-Aug-13 12:39:10

A colleague of mine just named her little girl Zoe - I really liked it because it suits a girl/woman of any age and is well-known enough to avoid spelling/pronunciation issues but not often used.

Like Caroline as a middle name too, or what about Kathryn or Rebecca?

MortifiedAdams Tue 27-Aug-13 13:55:39

Zac for a boy?

noodlebum Tue 27-Aug-13 14:00:25

I like it!

Writerwannabe83 Tue 27-Aug-13 17:49:03

I mentioned Zack a few days ago but hubby didn't like it.

We do have a name on our Boys list now though : Brian!!
This is a complete joke and only because it is the name of a stray cat that comes and visits us sometimes grin

Mothersruin75 Tue 27-Aug-13 22:04:56

We've just called one of our DDs Zoë (do I know you grumbleliongrin) Like you it was DH's suggestion and it grew on me over the pregnancy. Had lots of compliments on it, we also have short surname. Her MN is Faith.

The only boys name we could agree on was Toby if that's any help.

Writerwannabe83 Tue 27-Aug-13 22:09:16

I love the name Toby!!! Husband has said no though hmm

I keep suggesting it every 2 or 3 days just in case he has forgotten it has previously been suggested and has also forgotten that he doesn't like it grin

mynameisnotmichaelcaine Wed 28-Aug-13 07:58:57

I think Zoë Wise is a great name. My best friend is called Zoë, and I've always thought it's a very underused name.

Mothersruin75 Wed 28-Aug-13 08:48:33

OP we have great taste. Could you try Tobias with DH or would he see through that one?

Other boys names I had on my list were Alex, Isaac, Max.

Writerwannabe83 Wed 28-Aug-13 09:07:26

Yep, already tried Tobias, haha grin

Why can't men just cooperate with us?! grin

gintastic Wed 28-Aug-13 09:27:39

My daughter has a very short name (2 syllables, followed by 2 and then 1 for the surname). Never crossed my mind that it was a problem.

At least it fits on all the official forms, only 12 letters total over 3 names!

I think Zoe Wise is a fab name :-)

CoolStoryBro Wed 28-Aug-13 09:33:28

I knew a Zoe Wise at school and, quite freakily, I dreamt about her last night too. I'm a bit weirded out now!!

Writerwannabe83 Wed 28-Aug-13 09:43:01

That's really, really weird!!

It's clearly some kind of sign that I'm going to have a girl and Zoe must be her name! grin

Was she nice?? grin

CoolStoryBro Wed 28-Aug-13 10:55:10

Yes, she was!
