Our surname ends with an -o.

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 21:52:12

and has two syllables.

Rhubarb78 Sat 17-Aug-13 22:01:41

Edith, nn edie if thats an option

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 22:04:51

Thanks for everyone's opinions. The problem I've got is that I don't have a favourite. Partly I can't imagine this one will be a girl.

nailslikeknives Sat 17-Aug-13 22:05:51

Love Beatrice. As long as your surname doesn't start with 'O' :-) kids can be cruel etc etc.
Anyhoo, Beatrice and Audrey are my fave girls' names.

nailslikeknives Sat 17-Aug-13 22:07:21

Oh, sorry, just saw your last name does end with an o. Guess that's the end of Beatrice for me.

Viviennemary Sat 17-Aug-13 22:07:47

I like April, Edith, Hester, Iris and Sylvie.

exoticfruits Sat 17-Aug-13 22:15:42

Edith

You can probably cut that list in half tonight just by doing this: practise repeating the name at least 7 times whilst issuing a command across a busy playgroup. Like: Ophelia put your shoes on. Ophelia... Ophelia! Ophelia, shoes on please. Now please! Ophelia are you even listening? OPHELIA, shoes! Right, that's it. Ophelia, 1....2...

hmm

You will say it a million times a day. If it doesn't trip off the tongue easily, if it feels pretentious or unnatural, if you worry what other people will think about it, write it off straight away.

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 22:20:45

good idea, but of course any daughter of mine wouldn't need shouted at in the supermarket surely! grin

ok so i did that, I only come up with Iris as passing the supermarket test.

DoItTooJulia Sat 17-Aug-13 22:23:25

Oh, I love Renee.

Hate Esme.

The rest are ok, but I prefer the likes of Otillie, Odette and Loveday....

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 22:23:35

ok, these are passing the supermarket screech test for me.

Bumblebee78 Sat 17-Aug-13 22:26:14

Got to agree with Jamesandthegiantbanana, think about how the name will sound when you are hollering it across the park to your child...again, about a million times!

HahaHarrie Sat 17-Aug-13 22:28:53

My favourties from your list...

Delphi
Inez - prefer Ines
Iris

FunnysInLaJardin Sat 17-Aug-13 22:30:24

Hester/Hetty was first on our girls names list. We had boys!

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 22:36:47

Inez/Ines same thing.

DoItTooJulia Sat 17-Aug-13 22:37:53

Sadly I'm not Cornish, not likely to have another baby, and even if I did, I don't seem to grow girls, so it's a complete fantasy.

But I love it!

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 22:38:44

I'm in Devon, we don't do Cornish wink

I think polly is a bit.....twee. Love Hester and Sylvie.
I was always going to call my little girl emmeline, emmie for short.

Maryz Sat 17-Aug-13 22:48:25

I saw a post with a list like that once. The op put up a long list, and every poster was allowed to cross one name out. She promised she would go with the last name standing.

I was very pissed off a tad disappointed when she didn't come back and tell us that she had done what she was asked.

fwiw, I would cross out Nyx because of the vampire books.

Wilf's Grandma is called Edith. I love that name!

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 22:55:23

I really really like Iris, DH is taking a bit of convincing as he thinks it's an old lady's name.

Tut!

tinypumpkin Sat 17-Aug-13 22:57:52

I manage with Ophelia just fine thanks! It works here.

HahaHarrie Sat 17-Aug-13 22:57:56

Iris sounds less old lady-ish to me than Hester, Polly and Edith.

But I do think you are over looking Gunilda from my list....

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 22:58:38

there's time exit. Iris she will be.

Iris Polly (lastname-o)?

bootsycollins Sat 17-Aug-13 22:59:03

I love Inez, Sylvie and Farrah from your list.

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 22:59:24

gunilda sounds like something you might say when first coming out of a coma

PinkGlove Sat 17-Aug-13 23:02:06

Love Beatrice/Bea, Esme, Iris, Kitty, Polly, Sylvie, Tabitha, Thea

Nice list!

jennifersofia Sat 17-Aug-13 23:05:01

Astrid, Beatrice, Kit, Theodora, Hester

Snazzyenjoyingsummer Sat 17-Aug-13 23:06:40

Astrid, Renee, Kitty my top three

Clary Sat 17-Aug-13 23:07:01

Of your list my favourites are Beatrice, Edith grin, Iris.

The others are either ones I am not a fan of especially or somewhat out there - Nyx and Ora would raise a few eyebrows round my way.

<reads on> Oh I see your shorter list included 2 or mine and you have now gone for Iris! Lovely choice.

thatwasadaftidea Sat 17-Aug-13 23:10:22

well i'm not really at the point of having a final choice. am ridiculously early on in pregnancy and have no idea if having a boy or girl. I have two boys, I woke up this morning in a state of fear that I don't like ANY girls names.
by bedtime tonight I'm down to 6 contenders. so that feels a lot better.

Emilymow Sun 18-Aug-13 08:55:04

Beatrice and Tabitha are cute smile

Tabitha - here kitty kitty
Theodora- ok Thea - like
Teddy- a very annoying boy in DDs class

NoComet Sun 18-Aug-13 23:38:45

Boys list are all nice except Remy and William.

I'm sorry I just couldn't have a DS called Willie

NoComet Sun 18-Aug-13 23:44:31

James and Thomas were both on my DS list and I know a nice Elliott, a great fun Myles and a very clever grown up Miles.

Reuben and Theo would be difficult to get past my family an DH, but I don't see why not.

Given your girls choices they are the two I think might suit you.

Tabitha Hadley sounds lovely.

RegularVoltaire Mon 19-Aug-13 00:05:27

Okay, so these are my very honest first thoughts to the names:
Edith/Edie - gorgeous
Esme - lovely
Hester/Hettie - I don't like this (reminds me of Hippo - I have no idea why, but I accept that I'm rather strange ...)
Iris - lovely
Polly - pocket. Really don't like this
Sylvie - cute

Elliott - don't like
Ivor - the engine
James/Jamie - reliable
Miles - love this
Remy - remedial
Reuben - lovely
Thomas - timeless
Theo - lovely
William - timeless

Good luck smile

MummyBeerest Mon 19-Aug-13 01:11:27

Iris is beautiful. And all your boys names are great!

Congratulations smile

NoComet Mon 19-Aug-13 01:13:12

Sodding Polly Pocket, I knew there was a reason why I particularly don't like Polly.

DD2 used to scatter 100's of stupid disturbing rubber clothes and shoes about the house.

ch1134 Mon 19-Aug-13 10:05:16

I just wrote my impressions next to each one and then realised I sound like a horrible person so feel free to dismiss. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks as long as you like the name you choose. But you did say whittle down. If you paid any attention to me you'd be left with:

Edith, Iris, Kitty, for the following reasons...

Artemis/Art/Missy - sounds pretentious
April - ok, reminds me of teenage mutant hero turtles!
Astrid - I had a teacher named this so sounds old fashioned
Beatrice/Bea - very popular at the moment
Delphi - doesn't sound like a name
Edith - nice
Esme - ok, quite popular
Farrah - quite Hollywood
Hadley - is this a name?
Hester/Hettie - prefer Hattie but it's ok
Inez - are you from another country? otherwise will sound pretentious
Iris - lovely
Kit/Kitty - very cute
Nyx - where did you get this from?
Ora - as in the time? (latin languages)
Polly - sounds like a doll
Renee - personally don't like it
Romy - ok, makes me think of middle class girls at university
Sylvie - gaining popularity
Tabitha - sounds like a cat or the child of someone posh
Theodora/Thea/Teddy - a bit tomboyish

ch1134 Mon 19-Aug-13 10:09:01

and for boys

Elliott - this is so popular, does no-one else think of 'Elliot huts', those horrible shed things we used as temporary classrooms (which never got replaced)? Also, most Elliotts are naughty in my experience!

Ivor - are you Scottish?
James/Jamie - ok
Miles - ok
Remy - no
Reuben - yes
Thomas -yes
Theo - ok
William - yes

your boys names are much nicer IMO!

Laquila Mon 19-Aug-13 11:10:14

I think we have quite similar taste, OP. from your original list I really like Hester, Ines and Edith. Have you considered Delphine, or Althea? Both were on our shortlist for a time.

From your boy's names, I love James (if we have a boy, this will be his middle name), Theo and Remy. TBH, I don't dislike any of your boys' names, although maybe not as keen on Ivor.

Oriunda Mon 19-Aug-13 14:39:30

I like Artemis, Delphi (what about Delfina?), Esme and Hester. As for the so called 'playground' test, I really couldn't give a monkey's what other people think of my chosen name! I'll never be embarrassed to say/shout my DS's name out, I'm proud of him.

Alisvolatpropiis Mon 19-Aug-13 15:19:50

Artemis and Theodora are the only ones I like.

suspiria Mon 19-Aug-13 15:26:10

My favourites are Artemis, Beatrice, Delphi, Iris, Romy, Sylvie, Tabitha, Theodora
It's a really interesting list

suspiria Mon 19-Aug-13 15:31:18

Boys list - Reuben and Theo

thatwasadaftidea Mon 19-Aug-13 21:46:35

yes scottish.

thatwasadaftidea Mon 19-Aug-13 21:50:58

i'm so glad you're all chipping in. very helpful. and lots of time for me to come to my senses on the bad ones.

Hadley I like from reading The Paris Wife. Hadley was Ernest Hemingways wife. i like the masculine sound to the name.

Oriunda Tue 20-Aug-13 07:04:47

Re boys' names ... If you are Scottish can I suggest Cosmo (my DS name!). Whilst I'm aware that some MNetters consider it 'try hard/pretentious' and no doubt fails the playground test etc etc it does have Scottish links.

thatwasadaftidea Tue 20-Aug-13 19:01:23

Cosmo is quirky, and I like it, but can't see it for my child if that makes sense.

TallulahBetty Tue 20-Aug-13 20:14:17

Hadley. Never heard of this before, but I like it. Maybe it reminds me of Tony Hadley?

thatwasadaftidea Tue 20-Aug-13 21:00:13
Frikadellen Wed 21-Aug-13 00:35:51

Farrah or Hester imo

noodlebum Thu 22-Aug-13 15:28:59

Astrid is great, one of my favourite girl names!

I also like Beatrice and Iris.

nevergoogle Wed 18-Sep-13 18:55:41

resurrecting this thread without the namechange.

i still really really like Iris, but both DH and DM have turned their nose up at it.

really not coming up with any other favourites for boys either.

Iamgoodbutnotanangel Wed 18-Sep-13 19:56:32

Renee or Farrah

AurorasShoes Thu 19-Sep-13 02:52:42

Haven't read the whole thread but from your original list I like:

Artemis (with nn Arti)
Astrid
Beatrice/Bea
Inez
Tabitha
Thea (as a stand alone name)
Delphine instead of Delphi

mathanxiety Thu 19-Sep-13 03:38:38

Edith/Edie - like a lot
Esme -- ok
Hester/Hettie -- very nice
Iris -- dislike
Polly -- dislike (parrot)
Sylvie -- love

I love Romy and Inez from your original list too.

mathanxiety Thu 19-Sep-13 03:40:04

Elliott -- very nice
Ivor -- 'the engine'
James/Jamie -- nice but maybe a bit bland?
Miles -- nice
Remy -- love
Reuben -- love
Thomas -- like a lot and like Tom as nn
Theo -- nice
William -- nice but maybe a bit bland?

How about Thaddeus?

runninggirl85 Thu 19-Sep-13 09:50:31

Love Delphi .. thats on my list if i have a girl .

x

elcranko Thu 19-Sep-13 10:35:58

Love Beatrice, Iris, Polly and Theodora.

CruCru Thu 19-Sep-13 14:53:19

I love Beatrice. Would you consider Delphine rather than Delphi? I think the latter may be mispronounced quite often (has a similar sound to Sophie).

MummyPig24 Fri 20-Sep-13 07:45:17

Delphi, Inez or Thea

moobaloo Fri 20-Sep-13 08:29:42

My favourites are:

Beatrice/Bea
Edith
Farrah
Hester/Hettie
Renee
Tabitha
Theodora/Thea/Teddy

top three probably Edith, Tabitha and Theodora as I love names with a 'th' in them (also Meredith, Elizabeth etc. smile )

NomDeClavier Fri 20-Sep-13 09:13:28

Of your original list:

Astrid
Edith
Hester/Hettie - I love, love, love this
Iris
Kit/Kitty - not as a name on its own but I live it as a nickname
Sylvie
Tabitha
Theodora/Thea/Teddy

Iris is a beautiful name.

Hettie

neenienana Fri 20-Sep-13 13:24:39

two of the names on my shortlist are here, Iris and Sylvie. I am also considering Nell. Of your boys names I like Reuben. Good luck!

nevergoogle Fri 20-Sep-13 13:28:10

Iris and Sylvie are lovely aren't they, can imagine these names for sisters.

MiaowTheCat Fri 20-Sep-13 15:15:49

Esme I love, but I didn't want to duplicate initials so dd2 didn't get it. Hettie I love too, but I'm biased since I taught an adorable one!

exoticfruits Fri 20-Sep-13 15:29:24

Edith

BettyBi0 Wed 25-Sep-13 09:37:58

Hester or Iris are great

nevergoogle Tue 22-Oct-13 11:49:02

Double drat. Having decided on Iris, DH and everybody else I've canvassed hates it.

pants.

DH likes Adelaide, Thalia, Hester.

Can anybody suggest some names we might like based on my and DH's list?

LadyGoneGaga Tue 22-Oct-13 13:15:33

I have an Iris. She's beautiful! I also like Esme and Sylvie from your list. We can't have Sylvie though as DH used to have a cat called it. I think it's gorgeous though. But would also alliterate and my married name already alliterates so could be too much.

My current lead fave is Marnie.

How about Isla if everyone is vetoing Iris? (insane, wrong people!) Similar sort of sound but perhaps slightly softer.
