Which classical boys name do you consider usable?

I read the Persephone thread with interest... Are there as many classical-type boys names out there that can be used nowadays? I'm coming more from the Hector/ Percy angle, rather than visions of me shouting 'Theseus' or 'Achilles' across the playground - but correct me if I am wrong!

Hector and Edgar (the two shortlisted names for my son ) smile

I don't know which category this fits into but I like Tristan

I think Orion is cool. Maybe Apollo. Castor?

(there are probably more, but Hector and Jason are the only ones which wouldn't get a hmm here and there, I think)

Aeneas?

We know a Ptolemy hmm known as Tolly. Only useable in the right circles though.

Alexander has stood the test of time. I also like Hector.

I know a brand-new Zeus Apollo.

Alexander. Top 20 name too!

Philip, Marcus

Ant(h)ony maybe?

Off the top of my head, boys I know with classical names (bear in mind this is from a Anglo Greek/Cypriot background)

Hector
Ares
Leonidas
Alexander
Lysander

Love Hector, and I think Terence is due a revival. Tristan is gorgeous. Lots of classic, biblical names are still v good but I especially like Simon.

I love Oberon but don't know if it's actually usable

niffernaffer Sat 17-Aug-13 20:08:52

That's lovely. I would spell it Auberon though

DS is Cassius. He was nearly a Cyrus though. I love Alexander too but it was vetoed by DP.

Paris, but only for boys IMO

But I agree that only certain circles can get away with some of these. I would be carted away if I named a child Lysander or Ptolemy

I want another baby. A boy. And I will call him Alexander <begins working on a plan to persuade DH>

I have a Magnus - tis a fab name.

Edmund, Cyril, Balthazar (know a 5yr old Balthy), Cedric, Leo/Leonard, Wilfred, Bede, Augustus, Clement, Sandro, Ceasar, Octave, Rupert.

SpinningSpider Sun 18-Aug-13 05:37:53

Love Clement. Could never use it though.

niffernaffer Sun 18-Aug-13 20:30:27

Clement is DS1's name so I'm obviously on the right lines with my thinking for number DS2. I also lurve Augustus (Gus) but DH not keen.

HahaHarrie Sun 18-Aug-13 22:50:43

Ernest, Francis, Aubrey, Ambrose, Otis.
