So, Junior Panda almost has a name... DH prefers one, I prefer another. It's DEADLOCK - we need your help!

1. Aubin Laurence Stephen [2 syllable surname starting with A]
2. Felix Laurence Stephen [same surname]
3. They're both hideous
4. Either is good

Stephen as you might guess is a non-negotiable family name. I won't say who prefers which but would love to hear your thoughts.

WhatNo Thu 25-Jul-13 10:42:38

Felix is great.

gymboywalton Thu 25-Jul-13 10:43:11

laurence is fab-especially with laurie as a shortening.
stephen is nice.

felix is ...a cat
aubin is just vile

Woopdedo Thu 25-Jul-13 10:45:11

Totally agree with gymboy, sorry

capercaillie Thu 25-Jul-13 10:45:42

Laurence is nice though. And Laurie is lovely.

Out of Felix and Aubin, then Felix is definitely better but not my cup of tea

Teamjavert Thu 25-Jul-13 10:46:43

Definitely Felix.

amessagetoyouYoni Thu 25-Jul-13 10:47:25

Laurence is nice.

I dont like Felix but it is vastly preferable to the, frankly, ODD Aubin.

nurseneedshelp Thu 25-Jul-13 10:47:39

I just keep thinking of the poor Stephen Lawrence :-(

WhatNo Thu 25-Jul-13 10:48:20

Gym bob - I'm sort of with you on the cat thing. I was the same until someone we know had a Felix. Now it's just his name and I never think of cats!
(Sorry - Don't like Aubin)

WhatNo Thu 25-Jul-13 10:49:12

Gymbob not boy

Sunnysummer Thu 25-Jul-13 10:49:40

Not 1. Aubin is odd.

Onesleeptillwembley Thu 25-Jul-13 10:49:46

Felix is a cat, absolutely not to my taste, but infinitely preferable to Aubin. Aubin really is bad.

WhatNo Thu 25-Jul-13 10:49:49

Arghh - I give up (slinks off)

MrsBungle Thu 25-Jul-13 10:51:23

Felix is preferable to aubin but not really my cup of tea.

absentmindeddooooodles Thu 25-Jul-13 10:51:32

Felix. Also like Laurie do you have any other options if you are struggling with these two?

Allalonenow Thu 25-Jul-13 10:51:36

gymboywalton Thu 25-Jul-13 10:52:02
500internalerror Thu 25-Jul-13 10:54:34

I really like Aubin. But its a bit of a mouthful with 2 long middle names. Actually, its those names I dont like! But I'm assuming they are family names.

Flibbedyjibbet Thu 25-Jul-13 10:55:18

3 sorry, have we ruined your day? So sorry

showtunesgirl Thu 25-Jul-13 10:57:25

Aubin, he WILL get called Oddbin at some point by people that mishear his name.

I'm also another one that thinks of Stephen Lawrence. sad

Felix = cat.

SixPackWellies Thu 25-Jul-13 10:58:31

How do you pronounce Aubin?

Is it like Oban or Auburn?

I like the latter.

squoosh Thu 25-Jul-13 11:01:08

3 from me too sorry.

Aubin is a bit lumpy and odd sounding.

Felix is wet and babyish.

But yes, Laurence is nice, so not all bad!

FromageFrog Thu 25-Jul-13 11:02:24

TheSecondComing Thu 25-Jul-13 11:03:52

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

tabulahrasa Thu 25-Jul-13 11:04:13

I'm not massively keen on Felix but I don't hate it.

Aubin is making me go confused Does it sound like Robin with a missing r? Now I'm repeating it in different ways with different stresses in my head and it's even odder, lol.

yawningbear Thu 25-Jul-13 11:06:35

Laurie Felix Stephen is Junior pandas name I think grin

pinkje Thu 25-Jul-13 11:08:01

Why not just Laurence Stephen then? More normal to have just one middle name isn't it.

yawningbear Thu 25-Jul-13 11:08:13

Am really hoping you didn't have your heart set on Aubin.

And congratulations flowers

Snowyelephantshavewrinkles Thu 25-Jul-13 11:08:15

3 sorry

Snowyelephantshavewrinkles Thu 25-Jul-13 11:09:17

congratulations btw

WhyMeWhyNot Thu 25-Jul-13 11:10:32

I have to use my initials a lot at work so always think of how they go.

AA. Roadside repairs or Alcoholics Anonymous

FA. F**k All

Something to bear in mind perhaps!

yawningbear Thu 25-Jul-13 11:13:10

LFS is fine though, more than fine, has a good ring to it even.

threefeethighandrising Thu 25-Jul-13 11:16:20

I love Aubin smile

JourneyThroughLife Thu 25-Jul-13 11:16:30

Well, I think Aubin is lovely, because it's unusual and has a nice sound to it....but then I like unusual names and called both mine very 'different' names. Better than Felix, which sounds like a cat...

I'm going against the majority - I like Aubin!

However Felix is, indeed, a cat.

Twirlyhot Thu 25-Jul-13 11:17:00

5. Laurence Stephen

tableandsofa Thu 25-Jul-13 11:17:52

I agree with gymboy.

shoobidoo Thu 25-Jul-13 11:19:39

Aubin is a great name - classic, strong, easy to spell/pronounce and not overused - what's not to like?

Laurence is a girls name for me, the feminine form of Laurent.

Felix is a well known brand of cat food in the UK.

nemno Thu 25-Jul-13 11:25:47

Felix is better than Aubin imo but just Laurence Stephen is lovely.

Aubin is OK, but not with a surname that's also two syllables beginning with A. Unless he shows signs of being a superhero.

GherkinsAreAce Thu 25-Jul-13 11:28:14

3. Sorry!!

Too close to poor Stephen Lawrence and Aubin too way out.

Felix Lawrence?

heidihole Thu 25-Jul-13 11:29:11

Oh I'm sorry I think 3)!

Remember though its up to you, not us! Felix is just too cat like I can't get passed the association so I'd say Aubin, which I also dislike smile

VinegarDrinker Thu 25-Jul-13 11:33:52

Felix rather than Aubin - but seems very popular at the moment if that bothers you?
Laurence is nicer than either imho

You're brave posting on here, though! I posted B's name back before she was born (along with a few other options) and was universally dismissed as being totally dull and unoriginal. You can't win! grin

SJisontheway Thu 25-Jul-13 11:34:21

4. I think they are both lovely, but Felix is my favourite. Try not to take all the responses to heart. You will never get unanimous approval on mn. If you love the name, go for it. My ds's name has been described as wet on here. Didn't put me off.

WafflyVersatile Thu 25-Jul-13 11:34:29

SlouchingPanda Thu 25-Jul-13 11:36:58

Thanks for the quick opinions! Really interesting to hear some outside thoughts - things can get a bit insular when you're confined to the house learning how to cope with a newborn.

All you voting '3' to a baby blue-ridden new mum, you nest of vipers, you! wink perhaps shouldn't have given it as an option!

We do like unusual, but perhaps our first two choices are a bit too 'out there'.

Aubin really splits opinion doesn't it... in a 95% of people really hate it and the very tiny minority like it lots sort of way. It is pronounced ORR-bin, and IS a real name, honest!

I am well aware of the Felix / catfood connection but before anyone called their cat it, it was a bona-fide human name! grin

Hadn't thought of Stephen Laurence being an issue but will be careful not to have them that way round. And the initials issue hadn't escaped my notice either.

Oh it's so hard! Will think some more...!

Bowlersarm Thu 25-Jul-13 11:38:05

squoosh Thu 25-Jul-13 11:39:29

For what it's worth I don't think Felix is 'out there' at all, I've heard of lots of newborn Felixes, it just doesn't appeal to me personally.

VinegarDrinker Thu 25-Jul-13 11:40:34

I know loads of baby Felixes, too, I certainly don't think it's 'out there'.

FeegleFion Thu 25-Jul-13 11:40:44

Don't ask MN! Not everyone will like every name.

My DS is Jude and I've read quite a few comments about it being a feminine name but we love it and he's a strapping big baby boy wink

They're both lovely names, I hope you and your DH come to an agreement. He's your son, it only matters what you both think.

Coconutty Thu 25-Jul-13 11:42:41

I think Felix is better than the one I keep pronouncing in different ways!

Which one is your favourite?

Instead of Aubin, how about Aubrey instead? Felix isn't too odd and much nicer than aubin imo

SlouchingPanda Thu 25-Jul-13 11:46:02

PS. No need to apologise for not liking our choices! I was just interested in a 'general' opinion... andvthis seemed like the easiest way! Certainly not ruining my day if you don't like them, and probably wouldn't stop me using either.

Hi Vinegar - I'm feeling brave and feisty, and resilient to a universal planning! <surprising on just 3h sleep>. Plus it's easier than leaving the house grin

Branleuse Thu 25-Jul-13 11:46:40

either are nice. I have a felix. ive always loved the name and dont much care about strangers feelings on it (thankfully)
choose the one you love

Opinions are just that, although i like to get the gist of opinion i wouldn't let it change my choices either.
I want to name my unborn baby xander for a boy or sapphire for a girl, i have already been told by my mother she hates xander and when i tell people they make a pissy face!

Better that than a child with a way to popular name, that has 5 of their namesakes in the same year-imo boring.

SelectAUserName Thu 25-Jul-13 11:59:45

I really like option 2, I think those names are lovely together. Felix is a great name.

Congratulations btw flowers

SlouchingPanda Thu 25-Jul-13 12:00:24

Thanks for your kind words PumpkinSweetie. Funnily enough we rejected Aubrey for being too 'bully-worthy'...<awaits backlash that both other choices will be just as bad!!>

Other short-listed options were Bartholomew and Gabriel. We had SO many girls' names!

FWIW Felix is my choice and Aubin DH's.

squoosh Thu 25-Jul-13 12:02:17

No name is universally liked, if you love a name go for it.

The only time I told someone on MN not to use a name no matter how much she loved it was when she wanted to call her daughter Randy.

VinegarDrinker Thu 25-Jul-13 12:02:45

I like Gabriel a lot.

squoosh Thu 25-Jul-13 12:03:12

Oh I love Gabriel so much.

shoobidoo Thu 25-Jul-13 12:03:20

Aubin Lawrence - gorgeous!

Littlecherublegs Thu 25-Jul-13 12:03:20

Go for Gabriel!

SlouchingPanda Thu 25-Jul-13 12:03:45

PS. To the PP who mentioned 2x 2 syllable A names and comic-book superhero names; I too have that combo, and although I've never had to rescue a woman from a burning building, I often feel like a superhero!

FeegleFion Thu 25-Jul-13 12:05:09

pumpkin Xander was the first name we both liked for DS. Cracking name wink

stopprocrastinating Thu 25-Jul-13 12:16:30

I love the name Laurence, with Larry as nn.

stopprocrastinating Thu 25-Jul-13 12:17:10

What about the name Fletcher, as alternative to Felix.

FreckledLeopard Thu 25-Jul-13 12:18:14

How about Auberon (as in Waugh) rather than Aubin (which I do like, incidentally)?

TigerSwallowTail Thu 25-Jul-13 12:21:21

I like Felix, I love Stephen, I don't like Aubin and I hate Lawrence.

So Felix Stephen smile.

ELR Thu 25-Jul-13 12:21:41

But Lawrence is nice.

Artijoke Thu 25-Jul-13 12:22:54

ELR Thu 25-Jul-13 12:27:19

Gabriel is nice too, the only reason I say I don't like aubin is because there was a boy at school called Aubrey who used to pick on me! But I suppose aubin is ok but I really just think of a pet or pet food when I think of felix.

Aubin is confusing me somewhat, I've never seen it as a first name. I have a French girlfriend whose surname is Aubin (pronounced 'Aw-ban').

How about Aubrey? Much softer sounding and a classic under-used boy's name. Or Auberon, NN Bron?

VinegarDrinker Thu 25-Jul-13 12:37:28

Aubrey is a girl's name too. Not that it matters particularly.

squoosh Thu 25-Jul-13 12:38:22

Aubrey is a boys name.

Audrey is a girls name.

VinegarDrinker Thu 25-Jul-13 12:41:08

There is a girl called Aubrey at DS's nursery.

JassyRadlett Thu 25-Jul-13 12:43:30

2. I'm a convert to Felix and know a couple of lovely little Felixes. Doesn't work with my last name at all, sadly.

Aubin makes me think of St Alban's. I know it's a saint's name but I think it would be a struggle.

SlouchingPanda Thu 25-Jul-13 12:47:14

Yes, Aubin is of French origin - can be surname or christian name.

All of our chosen names are either saints' names or biblical names which is important to us...

Still thinking! We have six weeks, right?!

SlouchingPanda Thu 25-Jul-13 12:49:03

Aubrey definitely unisex according to Wikipedia

squoosh Thu 25-Jul-13 12:50:32

Aubrey now considered unisex because America has adopted it in recent years as a girls name.

It's still a boys name though.

squoosh Thu 25-Jul-13 12:51:28

They also use Rory as a girls name but nothing will ever convince me that Rory is a 'girls' name.

katydid02 Thu 25-Jul-13 12:54:14

I don't really like either TBH. How about shortening Laurence to Laurie and having that as a first name? Laurie Stephen has a ring to it IMO.

haven't read the whole thread but that's my gut reaction, sorry

LaRegina Thu 25-Jul-13 12:56:33

Sorry I'm with No.3 - Felix is a cat IMO and Aubin is a bit meh...

I think if you're dithering between two, ditch them both. If you really liked one of them you would know you wanted that one - like with men really grin

Would you consider Laurence or Stephen pick Stephen for the first name with Aubin and Felix as middle names?

VinegarDrinker Thu 25-Jul-13 13:00:47

The Aubrey we know isn't American. Anyhow, OP doesn't have a girl and isn't considering Aubrey, sorry for derailing slouching!

Gabriel definitely my favourite of those you've mentioned. Or how about Jude, Noah, Elijah, Josiah...

niffernaffer Thu 25-Jul-13 14:05:06

NoComet Thu 25-Jul-13 14:09:44

Laurence Steven A... ..... Perfect.

Steven was my lovely grandpa and would have been DSIS son had she had one.

TigerSwallowTail Thu 25-Jul-13 15:04:50

When I hear Felix I think of the man who jumped from space.

TheCharWoman Thu 25-Jul-13 15:04:58

Felix is great because:
(1) it means happy/lucky/blessed - could there be a better name meaning?
(2) it's a good solid classic name. (It's even in the Bible!)
(3) it is international and everyone knows how to say it, spell it etc.

I really don't get the mumsnet obsession with 'it's a brand of cat food in the UK'. So are lots of things! Arthur? Stella is a brand of lager, Flora a brand of marg! Fwiw, when I take my 1 year old Felix to the supermarket we do a special detour to the cat food. I point out his name, and the cats - and he miaows grin but then that's just the happy/lucky /blessed little chap he is !

TheCharWoman Thu 25-Jul-13 15:05:31

Oops, sorry that was a bit long wasn't it!

Serenity6 Thu 25-Jul-13 15:07:58

Aubin sounds horrible, sorry. And what if kids at school might use the spelling to tease him ie A. Bin? They might not, but who knows.

While Felix is not my cup of tea, it is okay and far superior to Aubin.

Laurence is gorgeous. How about Laurence Stephen Aubin or Felix surname?

whyno Thu 25-Jul-13 15:10:06

Felix is lovely

squoosh Thu 25-Jul-13 15:19:58

Felix is marmite 'cat' name - I dislike it

Tabitha is a marmite 'cat' name - I love it

I'm a bit indifferent to marmite though.

Wbdn28 Thu 25-Jul-13 16:07:11

Felix Laurence Aubin

pygmy Thu 25-Jul-13 17:21:37

Felix is great!!

Green18 Thu 25-Jul-13 17:24:31

Felix! Aubin is too unusual-will cause probs for child(depending on where you live).

Green18 Thu 25-Jul-13 17:26:10

Laurence is lovely too! Laurence Felix or Felix Laurence is good.

HRHwheezing Thu 25-Jul-13 17:28:55

I'm with char lady.
Felix is a lovely name. It's a very European name, I like it.
Oscar and felix are dig and cats names but that's because we like them as names.

MrsOakenshield Thu 25-Jul-13 17:33:05

Aubin nice. Felix awful. Laurence nice. Laurence Stephen too similar to Stephen Lawrence. AA bad. FA worse.

Basically, I think Aubin Laurence would be fine but not with a surname beginning with A.

Laurence Aubin?

MrsOakenshield Thu 25-Jul-13 17:33:28

oh no, that makes LAA which is No Good At All.

MrsOakenshield Thu 25-Jul-13 17:34:57

what about Elias?

VelmaDaceDinkley Thu 25-Jul-13 17:38:45

I vote Felix

I also like Gabriel and Bartholomew.

SadPander Thu 25-Jul-13 17:54:38

I love Felix, DH has the cat fixation but can't say it bothers me. I think its a lovely name. Not so keen on Aubin sorry. Have you thought about Aubry? Not to everyone's taste but I came across it while looking at 1920's boys names and think its quite cute.

italladdsup Thu 25-Jul-13 17:59:38

Another vote for Felix

ToomuchIsBackOnBootcamp Thu 25-Jul-13 18:00:35

Aubin is meh, and terrible with an A surname.
Felix is ok-ish not my choice but I can see it might suit some babies.

Gabriel is fabulous, pick that!!!

Yika Thu 25-Jul-13 18:01:34

Aubin is quite horrible but far far better than Auberon or Aubrey which both sound wet. Aubin would be fine as a middle name. Felix is too trendy for my taste though it is a nice name.

MagicBaguette Thu 25-Jul-13 18:04:12

I prefer Aubin.

Haven't actually heard it before, but I actually really like it! (My choices are normally very safe!)

I would perhaps prefer it as a middle name though - Laurence Aubin Stephen is my favourite combo.

Not a fan of Felix

BungleGeorgeAndZippy Thu 25-Jul-13 18:18:59

I don't like either in its entirety. Felix is nice but not keen on the Laurence Stephen (too Stephen Laurence for me)

formicadinosaur Thu 25-Jul-13 19:20:48

Laurence or Lawrence is Lovely

Badvoc Thu 25-Jul-13 19:23:28

youarewinning Thu 25-Jul-13 19:31:43

Love Gabriel. I also like Laurence and Stephen. Felix is my favourite of the original 2 but not overly keen on either personally.

What about Laurence Felix Stephen?

MorrisZapp Thu 25-Jul-13 19:36:38

ZolaBuddleia Thu 25-Jul-13 19:41:09

Not keen on Aubin, too like auburn.

Felix, not keen at all, sorry.

How about Anselm?

Playdoughcaterpillar Thu 25-Jul-13 19:43:56

Another 3 sorry!
Love Gabriel and Gabe as an abbreviation.
Felix is a bit wet IMHO and Aubin is just too unusual, I would hate to have a name that makes people go 'eh? How do you spell that?

SoftSheen Thu 25-Jul-13 19:44:14

Felix is great! smile

johnnycomelurky Thu 25-Jul-13 19:53:34

People's preferences are very funny. I like Felix quite a lot and think Aubin is interesting and would grow on me. But I REALLY dislike Laurence as a first name and think Laurie as a nn for it is terrible, so I clearly go against the grain on this thread.

johnnycomelurky Thu 25-Jul-13 19:55:02

Oh and by funny I meant it's interesting how different people's tastes are.

FetaCheeny Thu 25-Jul-13 20:22:06

I've never heard Aubin but quite like it! smile
Not as keen on Felix but it's not terrible. Don't like Laurence.

CPtart Thu 25-Jul-13 20:25:00

But love Laurence as a first name.

ems1910 Thu 25-Jul-13 21:29:46

I'm pronouncing it Or-bin?

Either way it's 3 here too although Felix if I had to choose

ems1910 Thu 25-Jul-13 21:34:30

Just caught up on the rest of the thread lol.

Gabriel is lovely smile
It is interesting to get opinions but please go with what you love!

Andanotherthing123 Thu 25-Jul-13 21:53:31

I love the name Felix, it's easy to say, there won't be three in his class at school and for those who think cats, I know a Felix and it's defo not something I EVER associate with him. I like Aubin, but don't know how to say it.

BlueStarsAtNight Thu 25-Jul-13 22:51:35

I don't particularly like either of your top 2, but if pushed I'd go Felix as I really don't like Aubin.

Love Gabriel though, go for that!

FingersCrossedLegsNot Thu 25-Jul-13 23:35:43

Love Felix

XBenedict Thu 25-Jul-13 23:37:45

I prefer the first one, I know quite a few Felix's now.

mummylin Thu 25-Jul-13 23:39:36

Ooh my first boyfriend was called Felix he was Swiss and nicknamed Fewx ! Lovely name

ChippingInHopHopHop Thu 25-Jul-13 23:40:17

Yes - you have 6 weeks, use it wisely grin

I'm another 3. Sorry. (and that includes Bart & Gab)

SlouchingPanda Fri 26-Jul-13 04:42:18

Thank you to everyone who replied, yes, even those who voted for 3!

I'm really glad I started this thread. It has certainly confirmed that we all have very differing opinions on names and what is important (do initials matter? Brand names? Is Aubrey unisex?! Are alliterative names a big no and thus did I marry the wrong man!? grin). As one PP said, it would be really boring if we all liked the same names.

I think the best advice was to go for the one we love, and we will. I'm not going to come back to say what we choose in the end (still in negotiation) as I don't want negative comments after we've picked IYSWIM.

Thanks again flowers

Flowers? On a baby name thread? Must be the hormones <runs>

Tickledyellow Fri 26-Jul-13 07:42:07

Go for Laurence! Gorgeous name x

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom Fri 26-Jul-13 07:48:00

I think they are both nice. Never heard of Aubin before, but it's growing on me.

I love Laurence. I know a little Laurie (birth certificate name Laurence) and I think that's a great name.

Enjoy the little one.

SanityClause Fri 26-Jul-13 08:02:22

DS would've been Felix, except it was too "matchy" with DD2's name
