New baby girl is due shortly, and we're still unsure as to what to call her. DC1 is Kester so we're looking for something to complement that too. Our current shortlist looks like this:

I appreciate there are a few 'marmite' names on there, would welcome any comments and suggestions in the same vein.

I only really like Lyra and Beatrice from your list.

Really dislike Zelda & Cambria, and the Beckham connection would put me off Harper.

Other suggestions:
Summer / Autumn / Winter

Onesleeptillwembley Wed 10-Jul-13 09:25:42

Love Beatrice, the rest are hideous.

gillywillywoo Wed 10-Jul-13 09:30:53

So I'm guessing you like game of thrones, Harry potter and ... Zelda? Lol grin

gillywillywoo Wed 10-Jul-13 09:31:43

And Juno?
And maybe the band coheed and cambria? grin

gillywillywoo Wed 10-Jul-13 09:32:30

I really like Astrid by the way... Sounds nice with Kester as well smile

gillywillywoo Wed 10-Jul-13 09:35:43

I'm assuming you are actually into Zelda... ? Did you ever play final fantasy?
Always liked the name Aeris from FFVII.

all nice

Dancealot Wed 10-Jul-13 09:40:51

Love Kester and i think names not also ending in an er/a sound go best. From your list Wren is my favourite by a long way.

zoetstoffen Wed 10-Jul-13 09:41:55

The main reason I'm undecided on Arya is the GoT connection, it's a lovely name but wondering if it'll be a bit faddy as she's one of the few on there with a not-particularly outlandish name!

I've never read or seen Harry Potter. Are some of those popular names from that, I don't particularly want anything that'll have people thinking of Harry Potter quotes.

cheekbyjowl Wed 10-Jul-13 09:46:38

quinn and kester sound nice together. lyra is pretty as is beatrice. zelda does have the scott fitzgerald link but also fairy fountain so might avoid it

BreakfastInTheMed Wed 10-Jul-13 10:04:07

From your list I love Astrid and Beatrice (both of these are on my list smile) and dislike the others

gillywillywoo Wed 10-Jul-13 10:07:53

Hi Zoe!

Luna is from Harry potter... I have a friend with a dog called Luna due to HP and another friend with a cat called Luna due to HP!
That might put you off although i think its a lovely name! smile

Arya is lovely too (and an awesome character in GoT) but I think it might become very popular.

BetterDaze Wed 10-Jul-13 11:12:41

I think from your list Arwen, Juno, Luna and Lyra are lovely and go well with Kester. Also liked pps suggestions of Anya and Willow.

brackengirl Wed 10-Jul-13 12:24:25

I like Beatrice and Indie from your list.
What about Lark, I taught one once and she was such a lovely girl, since then I have always loved the name. DH wouldn't even consider it.

TenthMuse Wed 10-Jul-13 13:59:38

Like these:
Astrid - beautiful, my favourite, nn Asti is very cute.
Arwen - very pretty, if a bit LOTR
Meadow - if you're sure you can get away with it!
Wren - nice, but possibly works best as mn

Actually really like most of your choices in theory, but as you say some of them are quite 'marmite', and others are very closely linked to particular characters or people (Juno, Zelda, Harper). Suspect Arya and Juno in particular will be faddy.

Suggestions in a similar vein:

Astrid is my favourite from your list also, think it goes really well with Kester.

Others to consider maybe

PearlyWhites Wed 10-Jul-13 18:35:13

Like Beatrice and Juno that's all

BettyBi0 Wed 10-Jul-13 18:38:34

I like Juno, Wren and Quinn best. Kester is a great name too btw

GlitzPig Wed 10-Jul-13 18:46:47

Arwen-very LOTR
Arya-Not keen-only a n away from Aryan
Astrid-love this
Beatrice-love this, but seems very popular
Cambria-sounds like a car 'I've traded this in for a Ford Cambria!'
India-Katie Hopkins
Indie-not convinced this is a name
Luna-nice, but very Harry Potter
Lyra-nice, but very Philip Pullman
Meadow-not convinced this is a name
Quinn-very American
Wren-not convinced this is a name
Zelda-doesn't seem to fit with the rest of your choices!

Kester is Gaelic, so maybe a Gaelic girls name? Bronte is lovely, Anwen is similar to Arwen and Seren (Welsh) is really beautiful.

Rhubarbgarden Wed 10-Jul-13 19:06:43

I love Wren and Astrid.

Rhubarbgarden Wed 10-Jul-13 19:07:10

Thank you for all the extra suggestions - the list must reflect our tastes quite well then as many of them (Tilda, Xanthe, Seren, Merryn, and Vashti in particular) are names I love that my husband didn't like so much. I love Seren in particular, though husband preferred Serendipity which I think might be a bit much.

Cambria has been our favourite since the beginning, and is the name we use to refer to "baby girl", but it does seem to be poorly received on mumsnet in particular (I posted a thread about it before and many people seemed to think she would get confused for a cheese).

If we used India, we'd be calling her Indie day-to-day as a nickname, but I'm not entirely convinced on Indie as a proper name for a woman rather than a child? And I'm worried though that India might be a bit middle class aspirational though, which is fine if you can pull it off but I'm very much not that sort.

Harper I love but may have to reluctantly leave to the Beckhams. I also fear it would be mangled very easily in my accent (Haa-Pah!) I also worry that Wren looks prettier written down than spoken out loud, would she end up saying Wren-with-a-W lots? Ren and Wren sound the same when I say them.

This feels much harder to get right then than it was the first time round ...

OP I think you and I have slightly (but not entirely!) overlapping taste in girls' names.

From your list I love Beatrice, Astrid, Luna and Wren. Zelda for me immediately makes me think "Legend of", Harper is too strong a connection to the Beckhams, sadly, and Arya is too GoT. Lyra is lovely and has I think outgrown it's Philip Pullman associations.

I'll also throw our current favourites into the mix for you: Corin, Delphine and Auden.

TenthMuse I love most of your suggestions, btw.

Laquila Thu 11-Jul-13 14:21:34

I meant to say - I think Cambria is a very pretty name but I do think it might induce a bit of confusion ("Did you say Cumbria?? Etc etc")

MiniPenguinMaker Thu 11-Jul-13 14:36:28

I love your name list! My favourites, in terms of going well with Kester, are Beatrice and Cambria.

Some other names that I like - and I think we might have slightly similar taste - are Lena, Linnea, Merle, Isis, Veda, Seren, Anouk, Tamar, Marina... ?

Wbdn28 Thu 11-Jul-13 14:53:07

Cambria reminds me of cambric (a cotton fabric).

Still18atheart Thu 11-Jul-13 15:23:06

Arwen - Quite like it
Arya - it's ok but not sure how to pronounce it
Astrid - no
Beatrice - quite like it but it's aquite a common baby name where I'm from
Cambria - to similar to Cumbria
Harper - Beckhams
India - Like it
Indie - indie rock nn for India sooo...
Juno - quite like it
Luna - Lovegood
Lyra - Lycra
Meadow - too earth mother/ hippy for my taste
Quinn - Glee
Wren - a bird
Zelda - Just no, computer game

Onetwo34 Thu 11-Jul-13 20:24:23

I love Meadow and Wren, Lyra is great, Astrid great. Maybe Astrid sounds too similar to Kester though.

Arya is definitely faddy. I don't really like Cambria, sorry!
Juno and Arwen are Ok.

williaminajetfighter Thu 11-Jul-13 21:18:05

I like Wren.

Cambria just too much like Cumbria

ELR Thu 11-Jul-13 22:16:52

I like Wren.

MustafaCake Thu 11-Jul-13 22:26:13

Only like Astrid from your list I'm afraid.

Cambria sounds made up and she will get called Cumbria.

CarriMarie Fri 12-Jul-13 11:57:31

Luna, Quinn or Wren go with Kester, or how about Ayla.

thegreylady Fri 12-Jul-13 12:12:22
