It's in the title. smile

InkleWinkle Fri 05-Jul-13 08:39:12

I know 2 boys called this so that would influence me.

Yonihadtoask Fri 05-Jul-13 08:40:09

I know a couple of boys named Jay and one named Jai.

Therefore I would think of it as a boy's name.

MsJupiterJones Fri 05-Jul-13 08:52:54

I know a girl called Jay. She wasn't very nice tbh but the name is pretty, I think of it as unisex.

ovenbun Fri 05-Jul-13 10:30:44

it's pretty but tbh it makes me think of jay z, perhaps use it as a nickname for a slightly longer name like jaime, then if dd has a choice of nn when she is older? smile xx

notso Fri 05-Jul-13 10:45:04

I know about 7 male human Jays and one Rat called Jay also male so it seems more male to me.

I know a little girl called Jaya who's nn is Jay though.

BlueStarsAtNight Fri 05-Jul-13 13:25:06

I also only know it as a boys name (usually short for Jason), so I would say no for a girl.

BlueStarsAtNight Fri 05-Jul-13 13:26:12

Though actually I do know a little girl who's name begins with a J, and she is called 'J' as a nn, which I guess is kind of the same thing...

piprabbit Fri 05-Jul-13 13:27:30

Wasn't one of the female singers in Bucks Fizz called Jay?

andadietcoke Fri 05-Jul-13 18:24:06

It just makes me think of Jay from the inbetweeners who's revolting, but that's unlikely to be a cultural reference for long.

MagicBaguette Fri 05-Jul-13 18:27:22

I like it as a nickname, not as a full name.

So a nn for Jessica, Jemma, Jemima, Jennifer etc

CaptainJamesTKirk Fri 05-Jul-13 18:30:36

I think you will have years of people mishearing you and assuming she's called Jade.

BikeRunSki Fri 05-Jul-13 18:32:37

NN for any name beginning with J.

curlew Fri 05-Jul-13 18:35:44

Oh give the poor child a name that's actually a name. Call her Jay as a shortening if you like.

Layl77 Fri 05-Jul-13 19:02:47

I know a jaye

zipzap Fri 05-Jul-13 19:26:06

Another one who thinks of it as a boys name or nickname.

At a push it might be a nickname for a girl with a name that starts with J but they don't want the traditional girly nickname that would be more normal for their name...

LtEveDallas Fri 05-Jul-13 19:31:56

I have a female Jay.

sonlypuppyfat Fri 05-Jul-13 19:31:59

As in Hommer Jay Simpson

LtEveDallas Fri 05-Jul-13 19:35:20

Oh and it means Victory in Sanskrit, or it's a bit of a bastardisation of the Latin word for Happy.

(I didn't chose it for either of those reasons though, it has a very personal meaning to me)

BlackMogul Fri 05-Jul-13 19:57:16

No. It definitely says randy Jay from The Inbetweeners. A boy! So many prettier names to choose from beginning with J. Just use it as a nickname if you must.

exoticfruits Fri 05-Jul-13 20:00:28

I would assume it was short for a name beginning with J. I'm sure she would get fed up with people asking what it stands for.

SleepyCatOnTheMat Fri 05-Jul-13 20:09:39

I know a female Jay in her 40s, but it is her nickname, not her given name. It works well on her, and I like it. I'd say use it but put a 'proper' name on the birth certificate.

Leeds2 Fri 05-Jul-13 20:27:08

I think of it as a boy's name, as in Jay Osmond.

rockybalboa Fri 05-Jul-13 20:37:33

Not for a girl, Jay is def a boys' name. I know a Jaime who goes by Jai which is really nice.

PicardyThird Fri 05-Jul-13 20:42:52

There are so many beautiful girls' names to choose from. Why saddle her with Jay?

FoofFighter Fri 05-Jul-13 20:46:07

I know a female Jay (Justina) in her 30s.

ChubbyKitty Fri 05-Jul-13 21:25:50

I know a girl called Jay. And a boy called Jay.

Well..a man and a woman actually. They're both lovely and lady Jay is a nursesmile

miffybun73 Fri 05-Jul-13 21:41:25

I think of it as a boy's name.

mathanxiety Sat 06-Jul-13 06:46:29

Kay is much nicer and due a revival.

I think of it as a boy's name too, have only known one who had it as their full name, but also knew one who was Jay short for Jayesh.

krazipan Sat 06-Jul-13 06:54:21

Chubbykitty I also know a female nurse called Jay! She is one of the loveliest people I know.

ClaraOswald Sat 06-Jul-13 06:56:37

I know a woman called that, and I can't stand the name as she was a dreadful thief and just a very sly person to be around

Sorry, I don't like it (for a boy or a girl)

Stellarella123 Sat 06-Jul-13 07:02:27

My dd is Jaye, a bit annoying when as a baby people thought she was a boy but that soon passed, I chose the name as it meant something to me, and I had known a girl called Jaye growing up and I always loved it, I say go for it, there's a lot worse names out there and it hasn't done me or my dd any harm, and no one has ever asked if its short for anything either

CPtart Sat 06-Jul-13 07:05:29

Jay is a bird, or a boys name short for Jason or Jayden!

Kay or Fay are lovely though.

bishboschone Sat 06-Jul-13 07:09:45

It's both my dc middle name but it has some significance behind it in our family. I like it.

VBisme Sat 06-Jul-13 07:09:49

More of a letter than a name.

ConfusedAndNew Sat 06-Jul-13 11:04:57

First post yay! I go by Jae on pretty much everything apart from formal legal stuff, passports etc. Short for Jaedan. Its pretty irritating when people ask what its short for, I'd imagine it would be even more irritating if it wasn't short for anything.

raisah Sat 06-Jul-13 12:11:02

Jaya & Jayoti are Indian girls names which can be shortened to Jay.

berrycake Sun 07-Jul-13 06:42:13

Can't believe so many people here are hating on it; it's the name of a bird, and I think would be a lovely name for your DD.

Wbdn28 Mon 08-Jul-13 11:29:27

It's quite nice, although I'd go for something longer with Jay as nickname.

MikeLitoris Mon 08-Jul-13 11:38:50

Dd1 has Jaye as her middle name.

I never use it now since finding out it is the nickname exp used for his OW.
