What are your opinions on these names? X

tumbletumble Thu 04-Jul-13 21:53:52

I like them all. Sophia is my favourite.

PrincessOfChina Thu 04-Jul-13 21:55:22

I prefer Elizabeth. Lots of nickname possibilities.

Sophia and Emily are pretty dull to me.

Wishfulmakeupping Thu 04-Jul-13 21:56:21

Elizabeth

rundontwalk Thu 04-Jul-13 21:59:42

Elizabeth, then Sophia. Emily is inoffensive but wouldn't be on my list.

Mrsindecision Thu 04-Jul-13 22:05:14

Sophia
Elizabeth

Emily

Sophia is my DD's name so I love it. Elizabeth is classic and so pretty. Emily also lovely, very popular at mo.

Beamur Thu 04-Jul-13 22:06:26

I like them all.
My order of preference would be Elizabeth, Sophia then Emily.

marinka458 Thu 04-Jul-13 22:24:24

Thanks for your comments girls, any more? How would you pronounce Eliza? Like Elizabeth (ee) or like Liza (eye) Minelli? smile

Elquota Thu 04-Jul-13 22:25:52

Sophia is my favourite, then Emily.

Not so keen on Elizabeth.

marinka458 Thu 04-Jul-13 22:26:29

Can you also say why you prefer one name over the other, please?

miffybun73 Thu 04-Jul-13 22:32:45

All lovely, but I like Emily best. My DD - age 3 is called Emily and it is my favourite girls' name - I only have one daughter.

HarumScarum Thu 04-Jul-13 22:44:50

Elizabeth is classic and classy.

Emily is mid-90s and a bit dull.

Sophia is what people call their daughters if they liked Sophie but didn't want three in the class (but it won't make any difference because there probably still will be).

marinka458 Thu 04-Jul-13 22:57:50

HarumScarum, that's very to the point smile

All, how about between Sophie and Elizabeth?

Happymum22 Thu 04-Jul-13 23:03:29

They are all lovely. I think Sophia best for me. I find it pretty, feminine, strong and for some reason I really am unsure on Sophie, but love Sophia. I find them very different, oddly!

Elizabeth IMO is quite old fashioned and I don't like the sounds. I like Libby, but hate Lizzie or Eliza. I find the z sound sharp. I also dislike Beth as I find it quite a harsh sound.

Emily, I like this, but it is very commonly used. It just seems a dull option.

I have a Sophia, we didnt realise quite how popular it was when we chose it 7 months ago. It just wasnt on our radar until she was born.

Now both Sophia and Sophie seem to be everywhere.

Emily and Elizabeth are both lovely. I love Eliza pronounced like Eliza Minelli, I also like Beth.

Similar names, Eleanor Charlotte Emme (with the accent on the e)

formicadinosaur Thu 04-Jul-13 23:11:06

All lovely. Emily I have a soft spot for BUT Elizabeth can have so many fab nicknames including my fave Betty or betsy.

Elquota Fri 05-Jul-13 00:33:55

Sophia is an elegant-sounding name with a lovely meaning "wisdom". Emily could suit any age. Elizabeth is rather staid and dull compared to the other two.

PeriodMath Fri 05-Jul-13 00:35:17

I like Emily best.

Sophia is a bit faddy and very now. Sophie far better.

Mrsindecision Fri 05-Jul-13 07:11:17

PeriodMath, I'm not quite sure how a name of an early Christian martyr that has been popular since the Middle Ages and used throughout the Western World by many including Royalty can be described as "faddy"?

Umlauf Fri 05-Jul-13 07:13:47

Emily is my favourite girls name ever. Elizabeth is really nice with lots of good nicknames, Sophia I'm not so keen on, I prefer Sophie.

FetaCheeny Fri 05-Jul-13 08:35:00

Elizabeth is my fave, so many lovely
nn's. my fave nn would be Beth. I find Sophia and Emily a bit dull but out of the two I'd probably vote Emily as I detest the nn Soph!

Yonihadtoask Fri 05-Jul-13 08:41:53

I like them all.

Depends on the surname. I wouldn't choose Elizabeth with a long surname.

TalkativeJim Fri 05-Jul-13 08:52:02

Sophia top choice

Elizabeth and Emily both a long way below!

Reasons: I've always really liked Sophie/Sophia. Classic, pretty, and with a slight European air about it - a bit like Anna. Of course that's just personal preference! I think it's an intelligent sounding name.

Have never liked Emily. I think it sounds prim and proper and a bit boring.

Have also never liked Elizabeth, although I can see that it's a good, classic, versatile name. I think it's because to me (child of the 70s) it was one of the go-to middle names - everyone I knew either had Louise, Sarah or Elizabeth as a middle name, after Helen/Debbie/Lisa etc.!!

PrincessKitKat Fri 05-Jul-13 09:15:58

I love Elizabeth & the name can mature with your DD if she wants - Ellie might choose to be a Beth when she's older etc.
Emily is lovely but a bit meh.
All names ending in 'a' are a no-no for me - living so close to Birmingham they come out with a harsh 'ya' at the end not 'a' <shudder>

MadameJosephine Fri 05-Jul-13 12:38:09

Definitely Elizabeth for me. Emily is a bit too wishy washy and Sophia, although a beautiful name, is far too popular at the moment. Also agree that Elizabeth has fab nickname potential, my personal favourite is Libby.

Queazy Fri 05-Jul-13 14:16:15

Sophia - absolutely lovely smile x

SugarMouse1 Fri 05-Jul-13 14:19:11

How about:

Emmeline
Amelia
Seraphina
Elise
Eloise
Celine

I have a Sofia, she gets Fia as a nickname, I know quite a lot of Emilys and prefer Emma. Elizabeth is nice, but just nice, I don't love it.

TallulahBetty Fri 05-Jul-13 19:51:59

Sophia is lovely.
Elizabeth is ok.
Emily is dullsville, sorry.

exoticfruits Fri 05-Jul-13 19:57:39

All lovely- Elizabeth my favourite.

BlackMogul Fri 05-Jul-13 20:03:58

Why choose names that loads of other little girls will have? Elizabeth best of the bunch but the Queen is nearly 90 so Elizabeth has a very old and staid image. Emily is everywhere and non individual and Sophia is Italian, as in Sophia Coppola or Sophia Loren. Not too bad but Sophie is common.

marinka458 Fri 05-Jul-13 20:19:21

Thank you all! Just wanted to summarise but added a few more names. Could you rate these?
Elizabeth
Isabella
Emma
Emily
Sophie

exoticfruits Fri 05-Jul-13 20:29:14

They are all classic names- the age of the Queen has nothing to do with it.
I like them all- the order you have is fine.

HarumScarum Fri 05-Jul-13 20:32:01

Isabella - see under Sophie and Sophia only with Isabel

Emma - due a revival, IMO

Iusedtowearmakeup Fri 05-Jul-13 21:16:37

I think Sophia is a beautiful name - the best by far. I'm not a huge fan of Elizabeth for a baby, I think it's too grown up. I think Emily is perfectly pleasant but maybe a little bland.
