Hi. We are down to three names: Tessa, Electra, or Soraya pronounced with 'ray' not 'rye'. I also love Medea but too much like DD's name.

Last name is Spanish and ends with 'a' so names with 'a' ending seem to work.

All opinions welcomed!!

All opinions welcome.

Wow I love Electra!

williaminajetfighter Sun 23-Jun-13 12:59:49

Thx pink. Love names fro m Greek mythology....

ghosteditor Sun 23-Jun-13 13:01:14

I'm a big fan of Tessa; not so much Electra, and I've never encountered Soraya before and am not keep.

Maribel's my favourite Spanish name fwiw grin

BackforGood Sun 23-Jun-13 13:01:54

Of those, I only like Tessa.

noblegiraffe Sun 23-Jun-13 13:04:47

Tessa, because it is the most normal.

Electra didn't have a great family life from what I remember of the myth. Also, reminiscent of that crap Daredevil film so people will spell it wrong with a k.

ifancyashandy Sun 23-Jun-13 13:05:48

Soraya, then Tessa.

Electra is a bit too 'stripper' for me.

williaminajetfighter Sun 23-Jun-13 13:05:55

Shit, Daredevil, I forgot. Ditto Carmen Electra. Sigh!!

TwasBrillig Sun 23-Jun-13 13:06:07

Only Tessa from that list.

combinearvester Sun 23-Jun-13 13:12:09

Erm isn't Electra the equivalent of calling your son Oedipus? Or have I remembered that wrong...
Medea killed her kids right?

What the hell did Soraya do then grin

Sanjifair Sun 23-Jun-13 13:26:01

I like Tessa best. I like Soraya too, but will she continually have to correct people's pronounciation? I would say Sor - eye- ah if you hadn't mentioned it.

williaminajetfighter Sun 23-Jun-13 13:30:01

I know... Electra complex etc. sadly very few in Greek mythology come out unscathed!!

noblegiraffe Sun 23-Jun-13 13:39:00

Penelope does ok in the long run, struggling to think of any others!

fussychica Sun 23-Jun-13 16:26:10

Tessa for me.
How about Samira, Alanna, Alicia, Elvira or Cara

Coconutty Sun 23-Jun-13 16:28:28

Soraya isn't too bad. Electra is too strippery for my taste too. Tessa okay but not a pretty name imvho.

FingersCrossedLegsNot Sun 23-Jun-13 16:29:09

Love love love Tessa

zingally Sun 23-Jun-13 19:56:29

I only like Tessa of those. The rest are too... "out there". Electra is chavvy stripper and Soraya is... not nice sounding.

Imscarlet Sun 23-Jun-13 20:02:05

I like Tessa the best out of those, but I don't think it is a strong name.

YoungBritishPissArtist Sun 23-Jun-13 20:04:33

Is Soraya a Spanish name? I've only known Sorayas who are Persian/Arabic in ancestry and they all pronounced it Sor - eye - a.

If you pronounced it 'ray', you may have to correct people a lot.

FetaCheeny Sun 23-Jun-13 20:05:11

Only Tessa, Soraya sounds like surveyer to me, and Electra is stripperish. I would prefer Soraya pronounced Sor-eye-ah.

Rhubarbgarden Sun 23-Jun-13 20:06:17

Soraya ive never heard but very pretty.

Dont know why electra sounds a bit stripperish.

williaminajetfighter Sun 23-Jun-13 20:22:27

Thx everyone. I think it's going to be back to the drawing board for me.

Soraya I prefer as 'ray-a' but you're right -- it's generally pronounced SoRYEah which is, sadly, too much like psoriasis. Electra now sounds less like cool artist and more like stripper superhero and Tessa I still like but may be a bit wet.

Frig. It'll probably end up being Isabella or Evie or ADD MOST POPULAR GIRL NAME OF THE YEAR HERE....

Elquota Sun 23-Jun-13 20:27:51

Tessa, as nickname for Teresa.

Sticking with mythology

baskingseals Sun 23-Jun-13 21:46:22

I really like Soraya, even pronounced with the rye sound.
What about

Winterfel Sun 23-Jun-13 21:49:56

Soraya is fab!

FreedomOfTheTess Mon 24-Jun-13 10:02:24

Tessa gets my vote.

NB: I'm a Tess, I'm not wet!

JacqueslePeacock Mon 24-Jun-13 10:54:41

Tessa is nice.

Clawdy Mon 24-Jun-13 10:59:02

Tessa is sweet. Medea would have been a very odd choice...as someone else said, she murdered her children.

TwentiethCenturyGirl Mon 24-Jun-13 11:00:10

Tessa is lovely - I really like it. I don't mind Soraya either.

I really don't like Electra though - sorry. It sounds like a washing machine or vacuum cleaner!

Yonihadtoask Mon 24-Jun-13 11:03:02

I like tessa, but our last dog wad named that.

Not sure on Electra.

Soraya is good, a little exotic.

CheeseStrawWars Mon 24-Jun-13 11:09:33

squoosh Mon 24-Jun-13 11:31:00

Electra is a bit too 90's Vegas stripper.

Soraya sounds like a meat substitute.

Tessa is nice, although I prefer Tess.

TarkaTheOtter Mon 24-Jun-13 12:33:01

What about Allegra?

williaminajetfighter Mon 24-Jun-13 16:12:43

thanks for everyone's comments- Squoosh you made me laugh! Have totally ruled out Electra thanks to being too strippery/cartoony.

I LOVE Medea as I went to high school with a girl named that and she was beautiful and very cool. But I get that about the meaning.

With Soraya all I can think about is a soya-based meat substitute.

I used to work in branding, looking at new names for products etc. That was hard. This is even harder!! Thanks everyone for your ideas...

TallulahBetty Mon 24-Jun-13 21:23:54

Hate Tessa. Love Electra. Only like Soraya pronounced with "rye".

Turniptwirl Mon 24-Jun-13 21:31:00

Dammit now I'm trying to remember where I know a Soraya from!

I vote for Tessa btw

bugsybill Tue 25-Jun-13 01:38:15

I quite like Electra. Doesn't strike me as stripperish but I know a lovely 6 year old one.

Tessa is nice.

I wouldn't use Soraya due to pronunciation issues.

How about Saphira, Astra, Zhora, Thora, Isra?

Anri Tue 25-Jun-13 17:41:03

I really want to like Electra, but all I can think of is the Electra complex. Not a good association.

Soraya is fine, but I just prefer Tessa, and I suspect that if you used Soraya with that pronunciation your child would have to correct people a lot.

kelda Tue 25-Jun-13 17:42:39

Actually Carmen is far nicer then Electra.

Tessa/Theresa is lovely.

lollydollydrop Fri 28-Jun-13 22:00:01

mixedmamameansbusiness Sat 29-Jun-13 19:57:53

I don't like Electra, it seems a little crap sci fi film. I live the others though.

eatyourveg Sat 29-Jun-13 20:23:17

Electra sounds like a women's razor to me

I'm not really keen on any of them but would pick Tessa if I had to choose

kipplin Sat 29-Jun-13 21:22:13

Tessa/Tess. Lovely.

tumbletumble Sat 29-Jun-13 21:24:09

Onetwo34 Sat 29-Jun-13 21:26:48

Electra would just end up as Ellie anyway.

I like Soraya, but would have used the 'eye' not the 'ay' prn.

Theresa is Ok.
