Wannabuyawatch Tue 11-Jun-13 15:22:53

Don´t know if DC3 is a boy or girl yet. 2 ds are called Louis & Oscar, so if its a girl, I want a strong, cool name.
Not keen at all on overly girly names Bella, Billy, Milly, Zilly, Bella, Mella, Molly, Lilly, Mia, Maya...you know what I mean! Beautiful for some, just not for me...
So far I like Mimi (family reasons), Clara (my husband is Spanish) and Indie.
Any other clever MN suggestions?

Straong names for girls for me are Elizabeth, Frances, C/Katherine, Louisa.

We chose Sophia for our girl - means wisdom. I apply the "high court judge" test - i.e. could you see a judge called by that name. Counts out the more "cutesy" ones. If we'd had another girl, we had chosen Isobel as the next name. I also like Alannah (there's a series of childrens books called "Song of the Lionness" where the female protagonist is called Alannah that I really liked as a child), Hypatia (female librarian and philosopher in ancient Alexandria) or Portia (strong female character in the Shakespeare play "Merchant of Venice").

VinegarDrinker Tue 11-Jun-13 15:49:47

I agree with the classic suggestions: Elizabeth, Catherine, Alexandra etc.

<tangent> my Grandma is Molly and about the fiercest woman imaginable so I always pmsl at it being cutesy/soft! <tangent>

Wannabuyawatch Tue 11-Jun-13 15:57:12

I do think Agnes is nice, and Ines. OK, am cringeing at sounding sad but would like some "cool" factor to the name that you don´t really get with Elizabeth, Francesca etc - Like someone saying, "I know this family who called their daughter a really cool name..." <goes and crawls under the bed>
I quite like Roxy??

VinegarDrinker Tue 11-Jun-13 15:58:51

Are you a jazz fan btw?

Wannabuyawatch Tue 11-Jun-13 15:58:56

PS Mumsnet is great isn´t it? I am currently on bed rest for low placenta and bleeding so this is a brilliant way to pass the time!

Love Clara. Could consider:

Nancy
Agatha
Penelope

Ramona

Paloma

I'm sort of lol-ing at not wanting girly names but then liking Mimi.

Anyway, if I could pick and DH wasn't his usual arse of a self I'd go with Ramona.

Hester, Violet, Ingrid, Astrid have an edge to them at the moment.

rootypig Tue 11-Jun-13 16:22:55

Anna - such a beautiful, strong name

magentastardust Tue 11-Jun-13 16:23:52

Well I would put both Mimi and Clara very much along side your girly name examples upthread! We have a Mia and she gets called Mimi.

I think Clara is a lovely name. What about Esme or Eliza or Zoe or Zara or Hannah or Megan?

JoinTheDots Tue 11-Jun-13 16:28:28

Love Clara, also like Alana, Scarlett, Mariella and Caelin at the moment for what I would consider strong names (all subjective of course)

Sorry, not sure where the Roxy came from in my post. I meant Clara.

AmandaPandtheTantrumofDoom Tue 11-Jun-13 16:37:58

Not keen on Mimi or Roxy personally, they fall well into the group of cute frilly names to me. Don't hate those names - one of our two has a name which is borderline for that - but you specifically said you didn't want it.

For strong, I would look for names that don't end in an ie/y or an a sound. Although some do and still sound strong to me.

My ideas, off the top of my head:

Meredith
Miriam
Margaret
Cordelia
Emmeline
Vivienne
Virginia
Juliet/Julie
Helen
Agnes

Greek goddesses are cool and powerful. I like Hera and Artemis.

If you want strong and self sufficient, avoid all names that are diminutive of boys' names as they sound like they come second to the boys (thinking Henrietta, Georgina, Geraldine, Charlotte) even though some are lovely.

Also what about more modern names, that used to be surnames, like Cameron (as in Diaz)?

Jocasta
Josephine
Ignatia
Persephone

Wallison Tue 11-Jun-13 16:50:12

Hermione could also reasonably be shortened to Mimi, couldn't it? Always think of that as a strong but feminine name. Womanly, rather than girly.

Joskar Tue 11-Jun-13 16:53:17

Hester
Edith
Beatrice
Margaret (Meg, Maggie etc)
Elizabeth (Beth, Betty, Eliza etc)
Rachel

But then I like really old fashioned names.

Hecate, Mignon, Storm and Vashti are terrible ideas.

Roxanne is one of my best friends and she has had a life blighted with folk singing "that" song at her.

Lorna

Mimi sounds like a poodle (I do like poodles though).

Wallison Tue 11-Jun-13 16:53:57

Or how about Thalia, if we're going Greek influenced?

I really like Cordelia and Juliet. Used to know a very cool woman called Juliet and much prefer it to Julie.

Yes, have always had my eye on Violet but I think dh might faint with horror! He would want to call a DD after his mother who is called Carmen - quite cool in UK, bit boringly common in Spain (where we live) Plus I don´t think I could bear to give MIL the satisfaction!

I like Mimi for (kind of sad) family reasons, so am not applying non-girlyness rule to that one.

I like Emmy too or Leonie??

I guess "coolness" for names is so subjective. I would never say Judith or Elizabeth were cool, but then again, there are names that are just too try-hard cool - I had a neighbour in London with a ds called Tiger-Max! urgh

Wannabuyawatch Tue 11-Jun-13 17:09:01

Wondering if suggestions for Beryl and Cheryl are ironic?? That´s quite cool in itself... ha ha.

2nd choice and I think a great strong but not bonkers name is Medea. Knew a girl at school named that. From Greek mythology. Pronounced Me-day-ah

Iusedtowearmakeup Tue 11-Jun-13 21:48:49

Shouldn't that be Emmeline?

elQuintoConyo Tue 11-Jun-13 21:53:43

Ooh, my name keeps popping up, lovely!

I'm also in Spain. If DS had been a girl Maribel was top.of the list by FAAAAAAR! It's a combination of Maria and Isabel, we liked the femininity of it but didn't think it was too frilly - others may disagree you have my permission Mimi as nn would work, I suppose.

Carla
Veronica (maybe nicer with Spanish accent)
Maria del Mar - shortened to Mar
Maria del Luz - shortened to Malu
Alba

Belen makes me think 'bellend' (sorry!)
Montserrat a bit odd for the UK family?

Top of our 'wishlist' was Izaskun, it's Basque (as is DH) but it would cause no end of problems for my family!

Good luck!

EuphemiaLennox Tue 11-Jun-13 22:01:10

Mimi is horribly twee and wet.

I know one Mimi and hate saying it, it sounds like a silly sound you'd make to mimic someone going on and on IYSWIM?

Strong names:

Miranda
Helena
Juliet
Victoria (but not Vicky so best avoided)
Camilla

Carmen is also strong and rather cool. Why don't you make your MIL and DH bhappy and get a cool name Into the bargain?? Win win all round and you get brownie points.

As I keep mentioning, I know Mimi sounds girly, but has some strong and emotional family connections so is still on my list!!

Belen sounding like Bell End - that is brilliant! It means Bethlehem in Spanish so a bit weird IMO. Definitely don´t want to give MIL satisfaction of Carmen as she is already incredibly overbearing and wants my boys to call her Mama!!

I have to bear in mind names pronounced in a Spanish accent, so Juno is cool but wouldn´t really translate. I originally liked the name Caspar for my ds but it means dandruff in Spanish!

Lucia is beautiful...

I would avoid Maria/Sophia/Isabella/Lucia if you live in Spain as they are sooooo common there at the moment? Not many names translate that well - my DD is an Ines and it's always mispronounced/mis-spelt in the UK, which may be a consideration if you're ever going to live here.

Haven't read whole thread but if my Dc3 had been a girl (he wasn't) she'd have been Lucia or Anna.

I was going to suggest Ruth but doesn't really work well in Spanish. I also knew a really cool beautiful Danish girl once called Lone (pronounced Lona and no reason not to spell it like that?). Marnie is also strong and would work with Spanish accent. Also Marina.

minimuffin Fri 14-Jun-13 23:50:21

Love Clara btw

HibiscusIsland Sat 15-Jun-13 11:11:02

Mimi is in the same bracket as Mella, Molly, Lilly, Mia, Maya I would think. I like Clara. Not keen on Indie.

Bodicea Sat 15-Jun-13 22:30:19

Strong and cool? Hmm

Lana
Josephine - can call her joe
Rosalyn, rosamund - roz
Catherine -cat
Charlotte - Charlie
Samantha- Sam
Danielle - Danny

As you can see I like girls names that sound a bit boyish or can be shortened to boyish as sounds a bit sassy

Indie is indeed a name - a shortened version of many Asian names Inderveer, Inderjit, Inderpal etc.

Thank you for loads of brilliant suggestions. Can´t believe how many negative comments there have been about Mimi though. I have said 3 times that I like Mimi for personal family reasons (which are actually quite sad) and that I know it is girly!!

Ladyflip Mon 17-Jun-13 16:01:09

Just met a Zuleika. Very strong, cool and different but may not translate to Spanish. She's known as Zulu for short.
