Baby is due thursday, what do people like - elodie, or ottilie? Alice is middle name. One set of in laws prefer elodie, the others ottilie. HELP!
Also nicknames advice please......

derektheladyhamster Tue 21-May-13 18:30:58

I like Ottilie, probably with Tilly as a nn, but I'm not a nn type of person, more of a shortening person, so my Ottilie would probably end up being Ottie

Elodie- ottillie sounds too like utterly in a northern accent.

ilooklikegrotbagstoday Tue 21-May-13 18:34:17

Whichever you chose, both are beautiful!

MrsMagpieCovetsShinyThings Tue 21-May-13 18:36:05

I love Elodie. I'd prob turn it into Ely for a nn.

ilooklikegrotbagstoday Tue 21-May-13 18:36:16

farmersdaughter Tue 21-May-13 18:40:20

Ottilie is just divine!

Ottilie Alice is smashing!

adds to list blush

AThingInYourLife Tue 21-May-13 18:41:32

ReluctantBeing Tue 21-May-13 18:44:31

Hahahahahahaha! Really?

Aethelfleda Tue 21-May-13 18:52:11

It depends upon which you would be happy yelling across a crowded playground in years to come. They are both pretty but very much "of the moment' names which in years to come will date them as being 2010 decades babies. This may not matter to you, but either are highly likely to be misspelled as they grow up in all sorts of ways....

TenthMuse Tue 21-May-13 19:27:07

Both are lovely! Would go for Ottilie, as Elodie seems very much on the up at the moment (seems to be the new Amelie here in North London).

Really like Ottilie Alice.

ukfirestorm Tue 21-May-13 19:30:39

@reluctant being, yes really x

ukfirestorm Tue 21-May-13 19:32:22

This point in preganancy is terrifying. feels like a time bomb!

JennyEnglishTwo Tue 21-May-13 19:33:06

Ottilie is very frilly and I don't like the OTT sound. I think a lot of people would muRRRRRRRder it. I can imagine it sounding almost nice said with a soft accent but the vast majority of people would hammer it.

Elodie is safer, and stronger somehow. I also like Eluned (welsh). It seems your taste.

ukfirestorm Tue 21-May-13 19:35:05

Eluned is interesting, not heard that one

ZolaBuddleia Tue 21-May-13 19:35:11

Prefer Elodie, but would hate it to be shortened to Ellie.

EarlGreyTeabag Tue 21-May-13 19:36:27

Elodie here too.

Ottile. DS was being that or Penelope if he were a girl. I did have to convince DP it was a real name though... confused

NowPlayingZone Tue 21-May-13 19:40:48

Elodie, but they're both nice.

Letticetheslug Tue 21-May-13 19:42:34

Elodie, definitely. Although the moment you see her , you may well change your mind...

ChasingStaplers Tue 21-May-13 19:43:06

Elodie is lovely.

Ottilie is just meh.

Foosyerdoos Tue 21-May-13 19:43:11

Prefer Elodie, I also like Eloise.

AmandinePoulain Tue 21-May-13 19:45:52

I've got an Elodie smile

I had no idea it was 'up and coming', I picked it because I liked it when I saw it in the French baby names book (I've got a French dh).

(I've also got an Amelie, so you could say that yes, it is the new Amelie wink grin)

Foosyerdoos Tue 21-May-13 19:53:05

I wanted to call Dd Amandine Amandine but was vetoed by Dh.

ukfirestorm Tue 21-May-13 20:03:19

amandine also nice

AmandinePoulain Tue 21-May-13 20:05:25

I never knew my MN nn would get me a baby named after me grin

Still, my nn is far nicer than my actual name at least wink grin

AlwaysWashing Tue 21-May-13 20:05:41

Both lovely!

olivertheoctopus Tue 21-May-13 21:00:17

Ooh, both v pretty. Sorry, that doesn't help at all. Maybe Ottilie has the edge for me.

Rtfairy Tue 21-May-13 21:02:33

Definitely Elodie Alice. Lovely smile

mum2jakie Tue 21-May-13 21:04:04

Another vote for Elodie. Good luck! x

FranKatzenjammer Tue 21-May-13 21:04:28

girliefriend Tue 21-May-13 21:06:15

Elodie smile

VBisme Tue 21-May-13 21:06:45

Love elodie, but not elodie Alice. Not at all find of ottilie.

Suttyshotty Tue 21-May-13 21:07:03

Why don't you wait and see what she looks like? My DS looked nothing at all like the name we had in mind and he ended up being called something which was not even on our list...because that's what he looked like. Good luck with your new love bundle, whatever she is calledgrin

EleanorFarjeon Tue 21-May-13 21:09:27

I love them both and they were both on my list.

Elodie though, is becoming very, very popular. So for that reason, I'd go for Ottilie.

ChippingInLovesSpring Tue 21-May-13 21:09:44

Elodie - for sure.

Ottilie - is too much little 'utterly' grin

ukfirestorm Tue 21-May-13 21:13:41

Partner just threw marcy in the mix!

jamtoast12 Tue 21-May-13 21:17:01

Sorry but really really dislike both... Elodie sounds like you've missed the m off melody? Made up even? Plus likely to get Ellie? I've never heard of ottilie for which i think of otters sorry. I think you may seriously regret these in the future.

jamtoast12 Tue 21-May-13 21:17:39

Marcy is nice spelt as Marcie smile

Sorry hope my first post not too negative.

ukfirestorm Tue 21-May-13 21:21:14

No not too negative, don't worry, all opinions valid.

Decoy Tue 21-May-13 22:21:26

Elodie, definitely.

Ottilie sounds a bit like oddly.

sleepingbeautiful Wed 22-May-13 03:52:41

Ottilie. Lovely.
The word Elodie sounds 'wrong' to me. Plus may well have her merge into the reams of Ellies.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell Wed 22-May-13 04:00:59

Elodie lovely, but she will just be another Ellie/Ella. Ottilie I think is also very pretty, but I have the same reservations about her being "Otterly" in school.

Amandine is a pastry, isn't it? And not loving the alliteration, although I adore Alice as a middle name.

I think of your list, Elodie is the way to go, but it will be trendy.

cafecito Wed 22-May-13 04:03:36

AmandinePoulain Wed 22-May-13 06:53:35

Elodie isn't 'made up' hmm, it's existed since at least the 9th century!

scarecrow22 Wed 22-May-13 07:11:10

Ottilie or Marcie. I have a hard to spell name and now hugely favour names that are spelt as they are pronounced - and for your soon-to-be DD's sake pronounced as they are spelt.
many congratulations and good luck

ukfirestorm Wed 22-May-13 07:22:25

ottilie or ottiline though?

Don't like those names, sorry. Good luck for the birth though.

pascalia Sat 25-May-13 02:00:44

howcomes Sat 25-May-13 02:07:15

Elodie is a beautiful sounding name.

moreyear Sat 25-May-13 02:22:52

I love Elodie but prefer Ottilie with Alice.

GW297 Sat 25-May-13 17:42:04

Both are beautiful! I like Elodie slightly more though I think.

Elodie. And exactly how popular is too popular? I don't know of any Elodies in RL.

Leonas Sat 25-May-13 18:48:00

Eloise is beautiful!

Leonas Sat 25-May-13 18:49:20

*Elodie - stupid autocorrect!

Still18atheart Sat 25-May-13 19:07:20

I love love love Elodie

Don't like Ottilie not even sure how you pronounce it

thezebrawearspurple Sat 25-May-13 20:00:52

Elodie is beautifulsmile

nickrhodesjewel Sat 25-May-13 20:02:45

Elodie, definitely.

Squidwoman Sat 25-May-13 23:25:06

Elodie!!! Definitely. I am an Elodie. I love my name and so does everyone I meet. I'm 41 and have only ever met one other. (I'm half French - it's French but quite rare there too). I do have to say "Melodie without the M" quite a lot.

Squidwoman Sat 25-May-13 23:29:05

Also I've never had my same shortened to Ellie. Only one person (sister) calls me El. And my council tax bill came the other day and they had spelt my name LODELODIE.... because I had said it and immediately spelt it out for them. Idiots.

Squidwoman Sat 25-May-13 23:29:27

I mean my name

Moxiegirl Sat 25-May-13 23:36:02

Love Ottilie.

Elodie is lovely. My favourite French name is Maelle (pronounced My-el). Think it's a Breton name.

Have a friend with an elodie, deedee for short. Its a lovley name.

PixelAteMyFace Sat 25-May-13 23:53:38

Elodie, definitely, very pretty name.

Ottilie makes me think of furry creatures that swim, sorry!

AmandinePoulain Sun 26-May-13 05:35:00

grin Squid, I'll have to warn dd2 to watch out for idiots when she needs to spell her name out wink

I love Ottilie in French but in an English accent I think it just sounds like "utterly" and that put me off using it for my daughters

3boysgirlontheway Sun 26-May-13 06:47:59

I love Elodie, it is so pretty.

theboutiquemummy Sun 26-May-13 06:59:12

Why is everyone calling their child ottilie ?

Elodie is more unusual

Yonionekanobe Sun 26-May-13 08:03:23

I'd never heard of Ottilie until there was an actress in something at Christmas called Ottilie nn. Otto. I really like it and added it to our girls' names list but DH vetoed it immediately. No idea it was getting so popular.

I think Ottilie Alice is lovely.

Elodie is also a nice name, but I know a baby Elodie whose mother is a horrible snob so very unreasonably that's put me off it.

amandine07 Sun 26-May-13 09:29:05

Oooh I love Elodie- beautiful!

amandine07 Sun 26-May-13 09:31:25

Not really heard of Ottilie- only Odile which is kind of similar.
Personally, sounds too much like "otter" and potential annoying spelling issues.
I would go for Elodie!

OrangeFootedScrubfowl Sun 26-May-13 09:34:54

Do you think you will shorten the names? To what?

Squid that is funny!

Squidwoman Sun 26-May-13 15:09:09

@ Amandine07 and AmandinePoulain I love the name Amandine but you have to say it with a French accent! I also like Amelie and Magalie (in French). My sister is called Emeline which I like too.
I'm having a boy in Sept and we want to call him Atticus. I love it even though it doesn't really work in French. Tant pis!

SoupDragon Sun 26-May-13 15:13:41

MummytoMog Sun 26-May-13 15:18:39

I'd rather have Ottoline than ottilie. I know rather too many Elodies now to really like it. Are you set in a French name? I love Melusine but probs doesn't work with Alice.

AmandinePoulain Sun 26-May-13 17:29:17

Squid, I also have an Amelie. I love Emeline but thought it sounded too similar to Amelie for dd2. Amandine isn't my real name though, I wish it was, I hate my first name hmm

Lebkuchenlover Sun 26-May-13 21:33:18

Love Ottilie!

ukfirestorm Mon 27-May-13 11:43:06

God thanks for all the comments, we have taken a left turn and now we are deciding between -
Marcy Elodie
Elodie Alice and
Marcie Ottilie

diddl Mon 27-May-13 11:57:02

Marcie by far the best name imo.

Quite like Marcie Alice tbh.

amandine07 Mon 27-May-13 13:08:47

Elodie Alice is lovely!

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee Mon 27-May-13 14:06:47

How about Elodie Marcy?

ukfirestorm Mon 27-May-13 15:11:29

Maybe smile

Squidwoman Mon 27-May-13 15:59:32

Depends on the surname....

lovemybabyboy Mon 27-May-13 19:30:08

Ottilie. Love it.

MrsSchadenfreude Mon 27-May-13 19:45:15

How about Marnie? Marnie Alice is nice.

Badvoc Mon 27-May-13 19:48:00

What about Anouk or Manon?

ukfirestorm Mon 27-May-13 20:26:37

well this one is now four days overdue, maybe she wont show up till we name her/

tilbatilba Mon 27-May-13 21:59:52

Otillie is just beautiful !

ukfirestorm Tue 28-May-13 09:53:28

Is Elodie too popular, should we go Marcy elodie? {Its a double barrelled surname - C-L

Mehrida Tue 28-May-13 10:06:03

I can't believe Otillie is so popular. Certainly not up here in the wilds of Scotland it's not.

My lovely gran was Otillia, nn Tilly. The kindest, gentlest person I've ever known so I'm a bit biased on your name choices!

All the best with your forthcoming arrival.

JumpingJackSprat Tue 28-May-13 10:12:52

Otillia is nice, otillie is not imo. i like elodie out of your choices. dont like marcie i prefer marie, marcie looks like a misspelling to me.

ZolaBuddleia Tue 28-May-13 13:44:37

Love Manon.

CalamityJones Tue 28-May-13 13:49:51

Ottilie is a really beautiful name. Best of luck!

allinatizz Tue 28-May-13 13:55:55

"Why is everyone calling their child Ottilie?"

The only person I've ever heard of who called their child Ottilie is me (and DH grin ). Love it, naturally, but also think Elodie is beautiful.

FWIW we didn't even have a list of names before DD was born and it just jumped out of the book at us when she was a few hours old. Since naming DD we have heard of one or two others, but usually they are 90 year old Grannies (Like Mehrida's Gran). We just liked it.

Is is getting popular then? We must have started a trend!

GW297 Tue 28-May-13 14:58:33

I only know one Elodie and no Ottilies!

BerryLellow Tue 28-May-13 15:18:16

I like both smile

They aren't that popular, it's just more unusual sounding than evie, grace, lily etc so you remember when you hear it IMO.

French girls' names always sound so lovely I think. But then I have Cornish named boys so I have no experience in this field grin

Emsmaman Tue 28-May-13 15:20:11

Elodie was on our shortlist smile
I think you will have a lot of people mishearing and saying Emily though, as Emily is super popular at the moment!

Turniptwirl Tue 28-May-13 19:23:44

ukfirestorm Thu 30-May-13 08:46:46

The longer this pregnancy goes on the more we change our minds,
worried elodie is too popular, and that ottilie sound too much like utterly so:
So we are looking now at Merryn, Tansy, Julliette, and Serena.

ukfirestorm Thu 30-May-13 08:47:21

If this baby does hurry up we will be stuck with consuela or marigold!

jamtoast12 Thu 30-May-13 09:24:49

Merryn and Julliette are lovely! Good luck with birth smile

ZolaBuddleia Thu 30-May-13 10:04:27

Not a fan of Tansy or Serena. Any spelling of Juliet is lovely. Merryn feels a bit JR Tolkien to me.

TenthMuse Thu 30-May-13 11:57:41

Merryn would be my pick from your other choices - great name. How about Merryn Juliette?

ukfirestorm Thu 30-May-13 12:05:49

Like that.

calypso2008 Thu 30-May-13 12:10:08

Ottile is a gorgeous name. Elodie is also nice.

Congratulations and good luck with the birth smile

calypso2008 Thu 30-May-13 12:11:19

Why don't you wait 'til you see her, then look at her little face and decide!

ukfirestorm Thu 30-May-13 12:19:48

good idea. but then she might be niceface cutehead!

calypso2008 Thu 30-May-13 13:24:36

Or, Oh-my-sweet-baby-cutie-blue-eyes! grin

Maybe you should decide before smile

1789 Thu 30-May-13 16:56:31

my sister has an elodie, an ottilie and an agatha!

scarecrow22 Thu 30-May-13 19:02:50

Juliette every time smile ( though she will spend her life spelling it out if she stays in England....Juliet being more "obvious" spelling).
good luck with LO

RubyGrace17 Thu 30-May-13 19:36:34

I love Elodie. If I didn't already have an Eloisa, I'd consider it if we ever had another baby! Good luck!

IsThisAGoodIdea Mon 03-Jun-13 16:02:47

Ottilie sounds like utterly to me.

chickieno1 Mon 03-Jun-13 21:34:49

Elodie or Juliette.

Good luck with birth

MrsSchadenfreude Mon 03-Jun-13 22:07:04

There are three Serenas in DD2's class (and the rest seem to be called Sophia or Megan). Juliette is nice. Tansy is hideous.

scarecrow22 Wed 19-Jun-13 10:17:31

Can we ask what you chose? One of your options is my name so more than usually curious!
Hope you and LO happily united now
