Care to peruse my girls list?

(93 Posts)

We don't know the sex yet,but we have a very small boys list and will probbaly settle on one soon.Girls,I'm having more trouble with...
Will be a sibling to Skye and Arlo.

Opinions and suggestions please,I've looked at a lot of names (this is a very short list in comparison!) but I haven't found 'the one' yet, unless one of these grows on me....

Merryn (merry)

CognitiveOverload Mon 06-May-13 19:46:11

I like etta

Me too,I always have...I worry it's about to become popular though.
Could be the new Emma/Ella apparently. sad

TheRealFellatio Mon 06-May-13 19:53:27

I love Sylvie and Elsa but I am not keen on the rest.

CognitiveOverload Mon 06-May-13 19:54:36

Personally, I wouldn't worry about that. What about marron?

SurreyWithAFringeOnTop Mon 06-May-13 19:55:04

I love Sylvie, Etta and Elsa. Pippa is also very nice. Not keen on the others, sorry.

CognitiveOverload Mon 06-May-13 19:55:07

Vita is nice too.

KenDoddsDadsDog Mon 06-May-13 19:55:28

Elsa for me

OrangeFootedScrubfowl Mon 06-May-13 19:56:24

My favourites are Etta, Romy, and Merryn.

I do like Rita too though, and Elsa and Sylvie.

Love Sylvie - my gran was a Sylvia so was tempted but it didn't work with surname. Also like Vita.

ChasingStaplers Mon 06-May-13 19:58:01

Etta, Elsa or Merryn for me.

It's so favourite names are Maude,Agnes,Tabitha,Mildred,Ida,Mabel,Myrtle,Betsy,Agatha et al....
but I think they are too dissimilar to Skye.

I'm trying to balance between a name I love, and a name that won't sound completely odd next to her sisters.

Mivery Mon 06-May-13 20:00:12

I like Etta as well. What difference does it make if it becomes popular? If you do it now you'll be ahead of the trend :P

StrawberryMojito Mon 06-May-13 20:00:41

Nell, Ivy or Sylvie. All very pretty.

Rhine my aunt is a Sylvia...I'm hoping no one will pay much attention to the connection,as we haven't used any 'family' names at all- there are too many traditions in both our family's and if we used one,we'd have to use the others and then we'd have no say in our DC names at all grin

OrangeFootedScrubfowl Mon 06-May-13 20:02:47

Skye and Arlo go absolutely fine with Betsy, Tabitha, Ida, and maaaaaybe Mabel.

miv I was one of fecking dozens with my name at school,I hated it. I don't want a name that will end up being over popular.

Do you really think so orange??

Merryn/Merry is cute and I like Nell as a nn for Helena/Elinor. Like Sylvie. Zinnia and Rita are terrible, sorry.

Zinnia and Rita have been on and off the list a few times Remus wink
Nell wouldn't be a nn for anything, just Nell.

Etta or Elsa for me from your list.

Skye, Arlo and Irma
Skye, Arlo and Lorna
Skye, Arlo and Hebe
Skye, Arlo and Marissa
Skye, Arlo and Eden
Skye, Arlo and Juliet

VAVAV00M Mon 06-May-13 20:29:55

Have you posted under a different username before? I recognise the names and you were talking about IF you had a 3rd child, late 2011 ish time?

Congrats and Etta is my fav grin

VAVAV00M Mon 06-May-13 20:31:02

Early '11 I meant!

Juliet and Irma,I really like, and hadn't considered before smile thankyou!

I like Hebe too,but DP can't help himself with the Hebe Jeebies jokes hmm

RedlipsAndSlippers Mon 06-May-13 20:34:32

Love Merryn and Etta, in that order. Don't really like zinnia though.

VAVA Urm,yes, that may have been me...I'm normally some variation on Frigg...

I do love baby names grin and this will be my last it took me long enough to convince DP it was a wonderful idea,I think he'd keel over at the idea of DC4 so it neeeeeeds to be perfect.

miffybun73 Mon 06-May-13 20:36:53

If I heard the name Skye I'd think working class and the name Arlo, Upper class, would not in a million years expect them to be siblings.

Both lovely names, but surprised that they have been chosen by the same person.

I love Nell and Sylvie from your list smile

Snazzynewyear Mon 06-May-13 20:39:10

I like Romy and Pippa and think those go with the names of the other DC.

MortifiedAdams Mon 06-May-13 20:40:41

OP, I love all of your names and have all of them on a list as a possible sister to DD (Meg). DHs favourite is Pippa which means we will probably use that

5madthings Mon 06-May-13 20:44:40

Well Merryn is obviously the best name grin

I also like Sylvie, Ivy (had it on my list and dp said no). Like Nell and Etta and Elsa.

Also Esme, violet but I think its got popular... Bonnie, Felicity, Eden (one of dd's middle names).

Names are hard, I always think you need to see the baby to see what suits, my mil still complains that it took us a fortnight to name two of the madthings and a week for the others...

Put up a pic when baby arrives and then I shall be able to help more grin

You quite clearly have fabulous taste in names so an sure you will choose well!

Miffy they weren't chosen by the same person.
And I'm sad to see your post,it confirms my fears sad

DP chose DD's name (He's a bit of a hippy hmm) I never much liked it,but he was so sure and I really didn't have a favourite that he didn't hate.
I so wish I had stuck by Matilda (her mn). But by the time I realised I wouldn't grow to love it,she was too old for us to change it.
DP feels pretty horrible that he pushed me into using a name i didn't love so when we had DS I had the final say as I couldn't bear to get it 'wrong' again.

Aww,thanks fivemad grin

5madthings Mon 06-May-13 20:47:09

I like Skye and it makes me think of the isle of Skye. Matilda is lovely and again ruled out by my dp...

What about Iona?

invicta Mon 06-May-13 20:52:04

Love Elsa, and Sylvie is okay. Not keen on the others.

Well, Skye is a stunning place, dramatic, atmospheric and just downright beautiful. Maybe your Skye will visit sometime and be in awe of where her name came from. We almost named our son Blaven after a mountain on Skye but wimped out. I so wish we had done it tho.

rambososcar Mon 06-May-13 21:03:26

Sylvie - pretty and chic.

I know a Skye in RL who has a younger sister called Silver.

I love the name skye and will be the middle name for this one if its a girl.

I love Calla on your list, I love the flower.

And I hace a real soft spot for Merryn.

Also names I love on a similar vein are

Viviennemary Mon 06-May-13 21:27:10

I like Sylvia but not Sylvia so much.

Thankyou for your comments on DD's name smile Skye is indeed a beautiful place,I worked on an island close to it for a summer and visited often.
Iona and Islay are gorgeous too,and pretty names, but all I can think of is the smell of the whiskey in the morning from the distilerrys (sp?!) grin

5madthings Mon 06-May-13 21:39:50

Oh yes hazel is another we had on our list. Also I love Thalia, but as we have a Theo we couldnt use thalia!

Were you on Raasay Frigg? I worked beside a chap from Raasay for a while.

No,not Raasay, Colonsay.

blondieminx Mon 06-May-13 21:45:23

I like Etta and Elsa from your list smile

I love Thalia, and Thea and a few others with a Th sound....unfortunately DP has a very slight lisp that really comes into it's own when he tries to say those sounds. <pouts>

Exhaustipated Mon 06-May-13 22:28:06

Personally I really genuinely wouldn't think twice about siblings called Skye, Arlo and any of your choices! They are all interesting, slightly left field, quite current but not overly so.

My faves from this list are Etta and Merryn.

OrangeFootedScrubfowl Mon 06-May-13 22:34:28

What about Ailsa?

And yes I do honestly think the names I put from your 'cannot use' list could move easily to the 'can'.

<moves list about,squeezes in Betsy,Tabitha,Ida and Mabel>

I like Ailsa too actually....

Thankyou Exaustipated that's nice to hear!

sleepywombat Tue 07-May-13 05:05:07

I love the name Skye (Arlo, not so much) - definitely not lower class!

I vote Etta or Romy.

Kyrptonite Tue 07-May-13 05:15:30

Romy is lovely.

runningforme Tue 07-May-13 05:36:40

Romy is nice, the rest are just too old seems to be standard on MN

My first choice would be Merryn.
Second Etta.

Other suggestions:

Kerenza (love/affection - Cornish)

megarobotdiscoparty Tue 07-May-13 06:44:14

OP, we had a similar length list of names for our DS, none of which we adored but which were the only ones DH and I could agree on. We decided to try a name per week and call it to the bump to see which one stuck. I think there must be something about saying the names out loud because we got to the third on our list and couldn't get past it - it just felt right and we both fell in love with it! (we still have a back-up couple just in case it doesn't feel right for him when he arrives, but I can't imagine him being anything else at the moment!)

That's a really nice idea mega I think I'll try that!

Sparklytrumps Tue 07-May-13 09:59:54

Like ivy best

PinkApple86 Tue 07-May-13 11:52:14

Ivy is so nice. But remember Beyonce called her dd Blue Ivy. That could be a positive or negative for u.

Twinklestarstwinklestars Tue 07-May-13 11:56:22

Etta is nice and I don't know any, what about Elsie?

OrangeFootedScrubfowl Tue 07-May-13 12:59:04

Ha Mega we did that, DS came early and so we decided he just had to have the name the bump happened to be on at the time!

Merryn ,Etta , Romy And Sylvie are the front runners at the moment....

For middle names we like (due to family connections that might just please everyone!)

Mabel or Beatrice
Pip or Pippa

So firstname Mabel Pippa surname.
or some combination of the above four names...any thoughts on which sound best altogether?

Merryn (Merry) definatly. Although I don't want it becoming too popular, as it's the name I've chosen if we ever have another baby girl.

5madthings Wed 08-May-13 20:34:32

I dont will get massively popular, i keep seeing it mentioned on mnet but if you look at the name statistucs less than 30 chikdren a year are named merryn... I may have been checking since i named my dd merryn in 2010... Dont want it becoming really popular! grin

i like beatrice as a middle name but i think mabel is great, but could you have merryn mabel?

My merryn is merryn lola eden smile

That's good. I've never heard of another Merryn where we live. I love Beatrice for a middle name too. Merry-Bea. smile It wouldn't go with our sir name though. I love Wren for a MN but it won't go with Merryn.

5madthings Wed 08-May-13 20:52:55

Wren is nice and I notice you liked Clara on another thread, I always liked that and dp said no sad

DP said no to Clara too,and Cora. Meanie.

I do love Merryn and merry is such a sweet NN...and its one of those, popular on MN but not in RL names, lets hope the stats stay low!

Merryn Mabel pip(pa)
Merryn Beatrice pip(pa)

Merryn Pippa Mabel
Merryn Pippa Beatrice

5madthings Wed 08-May-13 22:02:13

I love Mabel but am not too sure on the two 'm' names, it seems a bit of a mouthful.. And I can't decide if it should be merryn Pippa Beatrice or merryn Beatrice Pippa.

Actually scrap that as I typed them I said them out loud...

Merry Beatrice pippa smile love that!

5madthings Wed 08-May-13 22:07:41

Merryn Mabel Pippa is growing on me.... Sorry not helpful blush

They are all lovely smile

Tis helpful...sort least they're all good rather than all awful!

5madthings Wed 08-May-13 22:25:05

Merryn Mabel is really growing on me having said it out loud a few times grin

AuntPittypat Wed 08-May-13 22:35:59

I love, love, love Agnes from your second list. And I think it goes very well with Skye and Arlo (although I know some people don't like to have two DCs with the same initial.
I also really like the name Skye and don't see it as working class at all. In fact, I like all the names you've mentioned so far (except maybe Zinnia). smile

miffybun73 Wed 08-May-13 22:42:44

UpTheFRIGGinDuff I feel awful, didn't mean to make you feel sad. As I said, both are lovely names and no reason why they have to match/go together in any way. Your children are individuals after all with their own characters and Skye is a really pretty name.

It's okay miffy I'm just a little hormonal grin

raisah Thu 09-May-13 02:30:37

Zinnia is a lovely underused flower name.
How about Eloise?

CheerfulYank Thu 09-May-13 02:52:48

I love Merryn. Beatrice and Mabel are also very sweet...I wanted Mabel for the one due in a few weeks, but DH has vetoed.

TheRealFellatio Thu 09-May-13 04:07:48

In 7 years time there will be two or three Merryns in every reception class, you mark my words.

That, and Seren. Two years ago I'd never hear of either of them and now they are the names that everyone on MN coos over every time they are mentioned. If being over-popular doesn't matter to you that's fine, but if it does I'd avoid.

mathanxiety Thu 09-May-13 04:43:44

I don't like Ivy, Hera, Calla or Nell (which reminds me of 'knell'). The rest are lovely and would go well with Skye and Arlo.

I especially like Romy, Elsa and Vita.

Romy Beatrice
Elsa Beatrice
Vita Mabel

TheRealFellatio Thu 09-May-13 05:03:22

Elsa is MY baby name, lovingly guarded through three PGs all of which have produced boys, the eldest of whom is now 20 and I refuse to allow it to become the nom du jour, even though I will never get to use it ever

That and Elspeth. I keep seeing them mentioned on here lately and they are mine I tell you - mine. grin I having been clining to the hope of putting pressure on whichever of my sons produces the first granddaughter to use it. hmm

Merryn is very pretty imo and goes well with your other DC names.

Zinnia, Sylvie and Rita and not nice, sorry.

JojoMags Thu 09-May-13 14:49:44

Sylvie, Elsa and Pippa are lovely. Nell is fine. Not keen on the others. What about Isla or Iona? Or if you like Merry you could have it as a nn for Meredith.

JojoMags Thu 09-May-13 14:50:58

Also Tabitha is gorgeous and I think it goes fine with your dds.

PickleSarnie Thu 09-May-13 15:51:31

Elsa. A million times Elsa.

I love it. It was my baby name. I have two boys and won't be having any more. Am going to get a goldfish or something just so I get to use the name.

I already mentioned up there ^ that Iona and Islay will forever be whiskey to me wink they are also gaining in popularity a little to fast for my liking.
I don't like Meredith.
I do like Merryn,so if I have a merry,she'll be a Merryn.
DP has vetoed Tabitha...Elsa is lovely, but I don't think it's going to be the one.

Front runners are still:

With MN's either Mabel or Beatrice and pip(pa)

It's a lovely feeling to have a nice short list grin

SilverBirdie Thu 09-May-13 16:05:29

<<Waves from Beady>>
Top three:

I like Pippa and Nell too.

ELsa is our no. 2 and Sylvie (dm is Sylvia) our no.3 choice for dd due in a few weeks.

So you got a bfp?? Horrah grin huge congrats

<<Waves madly back>>

Yes,a BFP! grin thanks.

Ooooh, you don't have long now! There will be pictures on FB,won't there?! grin

Of the baby,I mean...

AnAirOfHope Thu 09-May-13 16:23:58

Out of your list i like Merryn the best.

With the siblings names i would call new baby girl Matilda nn Tilly.

Skye and Tilly
Arlo and Tilly

I like Tilly blush

Skye's mn name is Matilda.
So that might be an odd thing to do in our case wink

SilverBirdie Thu 09-May-13 19:42:53

Of course frigg you know we're photo mad here. Millions of J on there grin

BikeRunSki Thu 09-May-13 20:22:44

Skye, Arlo and Gaia?

Hurray grin I love a nice squishy new baby pic!

No,not Gaia,a close friends child is named this. I'm happy with the names on my list now,I just need to decide the order of the MN's.....and choose a favorite of course!

ELR Thu 09-May-13 21:36:35

I love Tabitha and Etta

ELR Thu 09-May-13 21:39:35

Sorry just read your last comment from your short list I like Etta then merryn not too keen on the rest

georgettemagritte Fri 10-May-13 16:43:01

IMO the ones which go best with Skye and Arlo are:

but the one I most prefer is Merryn.

FetaCheeny Fri 10-May-13 16:54:04

Great selection of names! My favourites are:

- Sylvie (but much prefer sylvia with nn Sylvie)
- Merryn - BEAUTIFUL name
- Zinnia - Really pretty and unusual

I Think Calla is also pretty, but prefer Callia.
Not so keen on Ivy ot Nell.
