Do you know any girls which name Lila is prounanced this way?

shelli135 Fri 03-May-13 18:11:59

Nope, I think it would get pretty irritating having to correct people all the time.

KobayashiMaru Fri 03-May-13 18:12:15

Wouldn't most people say Lie-la? Lion is not lee-on, like is not leek.....

BikeRunSki Fri 03-May-13 18:15:16

Ermm no, because the letters "Lila" do not make the sound "Leela" but "Lie-la".

starfishmummy Fri 03-May-13 18:21:39

No. She will spend a lifetime correcting people and wishing she was called Jane

ChewingOnLifesGristle Fri 03-May-13 18:25:53

No. Agree about the correcting likely to become wearing.

idalia Fri 03-May-13 18:27:03

How would you prounanced name Lisa?

Bowlersarm Fri 03-May-13 18:28:45

Ah good point OP. But then again how would you pronounce Liza?

CajaDeLaMemoria Fri 03-May-13 18:30:32

No. But I do know a Leela. Named after Futurama, I presume.

Bonsoir Fri 03-May-13 18:33:56

"Leela" is a horrible name.

Cloverer Fri 03-May-13 18:34:21

I think if you want Leela I would spell it Leela, Lela or Lelah.

Lila - L-ai-la

Leila - L-ay-la

MyNameIsSuz Sat 04-May-13 09:15:14

It's German for purple, and that's pronounced like leela. I guess anyone German would automatically pronounce it that way? That's not terribly helpful is it...

EuroShaggleton Sat 04-May-13 09:17:24

I like Leela. But I prefer Lila (pronounced Lye-la).

devonsmummy Sat 04-May-13 09:20:41

Only lila I know is Lie-la

andadietcoke Sat 04-May-13 09:21:43

I know a Leela - spelt like that.

AuntieStella Sat 04-May-13 09:24:42

Leela would be the way to spell it in UK (Doctor Who influence?)

Swanlike Sat 04-May-13 09:27:09

I have a Leila, which is pronounced Leela, in a similar way that Sheila is pronounced Sheela. It's a family name and has always been pronounced that way. People often think it's pronounced Layla as that's a more common name.

JohnSnowsTie Sat 04-May-13 09:29:58

I used to know a Leila who pronounced it Leela.

lljkk Sat 04-May-13 09:32:55

I would spell it Leela if I wanted it said Leela.

DeputyDeputyChiefOfStaff Sat 04-May-13 09:33:08

I knew someone at primary school whose name was pronounced Leela, but I can't remember how she spelt it. I always thought it was a pretty name.

magpieC Sat 04-May-13 09:33:45

I know a Lila pronounced Leela - her parents are Austrian and, as has been said, it's German for purple.

cantreachmytoes Sat 04-May-13 09:41:19

I know a Lila pronounced Leela. It didn't occur to me that you'd say it any other way - and she does not have big problems with it. The way to make the "I" sound "ih" would be to write it Lilla.
As its a name of Arabic origin, there isn't a correct English way of writing it anyway, so best keep it simple.

(I have a friend called Anna. Simple name, right? She has to often spell it so that there are two "Ns" and to make sure it ends with and "a" not an "e".)

Swanlike Sat 04-May-13 09:46:52

So would you all assume that Sheila should be pronounced Shayla? The name, pronunciation and spelling have been in my family for at least 4 generations.

galwaygirl Sat 04-May-13 09:48:18

It's also the Swedish for purple and pronounced Leela too.
I think it depends where you live, the the UK people would probably say Lie-la but elsewhere in Europe you might get Leela.

wigglesrock Sat 04-May-13 10:32:54

I know a Liela pronounced Leela. If I saw the name written down I'd ask how to pronounce it, I'd have 3 different ways. People usually only need telling once, I have a Sofia, she's almost 8 and we had a few what now pronunciations a few times but certainly not enough to piss either her or me off.

wigglesrock Sat 04-May-13 10:34:17

or Lila even blush I can't use my phone - touch screen and fat fingers - the enemy of technology

Kittykatmacbill Sat 04-May-13 14:13:00

Leela makes me think of futrama! It's quite nice spelt like that.

I would assume that Lila would be pronounced like lilac - same root word I guess?

Friend has just named her daughter Mila (nicknamed Smila, obviously that caught on but it's very sweet!) pronounced My-la, like Lila would be. However, because of Mila Kunis, everyone thinks it's Mee-La. oops.

MakingAnotherList Sat 04-May-13 14:30:21

I would pronounce it Leela.
I would do so because of Lilo and Stitch blush

raisah Mon 06-May-13 08:16:31

Leela is an Indian girls name and is spelt & pronounced as such. if you want people to pronounce it as Leela then spell it that way to avoid the constant mispronounciation. Leela is a name in its own right.

Coffee1Sugar Mon 06-May-13 11:40:04

I know a Leila who pronounces it as "leela"

SailorJupiter Mon 06-May-13 11:46:57

I know a lila pronounced lie-la and it's mispronounced more often than not, she gets leela, layla and lill-a all the time, rarely lie-la first time!

Also know a Leila (leela)

nonamenewname Fri 10-May-13 12:38:49

I wanted to have Lila (pronounced 'lie-la'), but I was fairly certain this would be "wrong": I know two Lilas (pronounced 'lee-la') - one Spanish, one Swiss. Clearly there's not one right way, and I agree with the pp who said that the pronunciation you like will prob be assumed everywhere but the UK!

(Btw, I didn't have Lila, but that's because I had a boy instead grin)

Littlehousesomewhere Fri 10-May-13 12:51:14

I think Lila would be pronounced Lilla.

I think Lyla is pronounced Lie-la.

I think Leila and Layla are pronounced Lay-la.

I think Leela would be pronounced Lee-la.

Saying that, people would eventually get use to the pronunciation. So calling Lila 'Lee-la' will be fine.

BackforGood Fri 10-May-13 13:00:17

I do think she would have to go through life correcting people on a daily basis, which isn't something I would wish upon any of my dc.

Cookethenook Fri 10-May-13 15:52:11

I don't know anyone in real life, but the pronunciation 'Leela' reminds me of Futurama. I think it's lovely though.

siluria Fri 10-May-13 16:29:55

I know a Leila pronounced Leela. She loves her name.

narmada Fri 10-May-13 22:33:29

I love Lila, pronounced lee-la, and know several. Go for it !

LiloLils Sat 11-May-13 07:43:10

My name is lyla, pronounced lie-la. I get all sorts of mispronounciations all the time but its kind of funny. I've got to the point where I no longer correct people. Then laugh my arse off when they finally realise their mistake after calling me Leela for months.

For the record I love my name as its unusual. It's Arabic for "beautiful night"

LiloLils Sat 11-May-13 07:47:21

Oh and in answer to your original post, personally I would go for the name that sounds most like the spelling. So Leela for Leela. There's no need to cause undue confusion on you LO's name...which will last a lifetime, I promise!

nooka Sat 11-May-13 17:21:43

In my family there is s small Lila pronounced Lie-la and a small Mila pronounced like Miller. I've not heard that either of them have any particular problems.

Leela to me is very Futerama now, although I loved the Dr Who character (and Louise Jamieson).

hurricanemum Sat 11-May-13 17:23:29

I taught a girl - pronounced as you want and spelt Leala

Wouldntyouliketoknow Sat 11-May-13 18:29:01

I always assumed Lila was pronounced Lee-la blush It's like Mila.

I'd go for it - Lila looks nicer than Leela and no matter how you spell it someone will always get it wrong IME!
