Baby girl is due in 3 weeks, her name was narrowed down to Arianna as long as it suited her but a "friend" of mine has just named her little girl this angry so know we are back to the drawing board... I did post earlier for thoughts on diff names but what do u think of the variations of arianna?

Astley Mon 29-Apr-13 14:29:23

I'd stick with Arianna! Never change the name you pick because someone else picks it. You'll be kicking yourself in a few years if you hardly see this friend and you use a name you don't love in the same way.

KittenofDoom Mon 29-Apr-13 14:31:58

What Astley said.

lottieandmia Mon 29-Apr-13 14:32:15

Arabella was on my shortlist. Did your friend know you were going to use this name? A bit mean of her... I would always say nobody owns a name but when it's a good friend and you are due around the same time it totally takes the p imo!

ncc85 Mon 29-Apr-13 14:38:47

I would love to still use it but we are very good friends (Ive known her for 15 years and see her every week).... in fact im worried that shell get annoyed that the name is still too similar confused

I know lottieandmia I casually mentioned that that was our planned name and she said oh i didnt realise!! I am a bit peeved but feel childish for feeling annoyed too lol

Astley Mon 29-Apr-13 14:41:04

Just say 'you know we'd picked this name too'. Then use it. You'll regret it otherwise. She doesn't own the name.

ncc85 Mon 29-Apr-13 14:47:29

You lot are ruthless lolwink

Gooseysgirl Mon 29-Apr-13 14:50:01

Use the name you had chosen

KittenofDoom Mon 29-Apr-13 14:50:09

Yes, do it. They will probably develop different nicknames or shortenings anyway (or one will).

Definitely use what you originally chose. You will regret otherwise.

telsa Mon 29-Apr-13 15:32:33

Go for Arrietty!

LeChatRouge Mon 29-Apr-13 15:34:06

I love Annabel or Annabella. Also, Aurelia is beautiful.

ZolaBuddleia Mon 29-Apr-13 17:22:33

Hhm, tricky if you see her all the time. I'm afraid I don't like any of your other suggestions, particularly Ariella (Tree Fu Tom and it makes me think areola).

Like LeChat's suggestion of Aurelia.

BNmum Mon 29-Apr-13 17:28:43

I'm with you telsa, I love Arrietty! grin

Still18atheart Mon 29-Apr-13 17:44:35

Stick with the original choice

Don't like the other 3 suggestions

fussychica Mon 29-Apr-13 18:42:45

Stick with your original choice. Not keen on the others.

MummyBurrows Mon 29-Apr-13 18:56:55

Stick with the orignal Arianna if its the name you love, quite a few people I know have kids with the same names even though they're all mates with each other!

But if you'd rather not have the same name then I'd choose Annabella/Annabelle from your list x

raisah Tue 30-Apr-13 05:15:23

Stick with the original because you may lose touch with this friend so go with the original plan. Another suggestion would be Anisa, it means good friend in Arabic.

Only choose something else as long as you love the new name as much as the original name, otherwise it will annoy you. From your list I really like Annabella. A previous poster's suggestion of Aurelia is lovely too.

thegreylady Tue 30-Apr-13 09:09:33

I know an Adriana if that helps at all but I love all the suggestions with Annabella best of all. Arabella reminds me of the rhyme about Arabella caterpillar which my dgc love smile

Stick with Arianna. I really wanted to call one of mine Ariane but DH wouldn't have it sad

dontblameme Tue 30-Apr-13 16:55:47

Funny, read your title and was going to jump in and suggest Arianna! I personally wouldn't use it if a 'friend' had, because I'd want my DD to be unique. (I have a stupid common name.) Alyssa, Amelie, Aurora?

LucyLucas Tue 30-Apr-13 18:09:59

Arianna is the nicest name there-use it. You chose it as well and you will regret it otherwise. This sounds stupid but when I read that I got really annoyed for you. I would hate it if that happened to me. Do it anyway. She may be annoyed, but it's not 'her name' and if you like it you should use it.

xyla Tue 30-Apr-13 18:21:12

Use it! Even if the girls become close and grow up together, it won't matter that they have the same name. Really. Would it matter to you if you had a close friend of the same name?

AngiBolen Tue 30-Apr-13 18:28:39

I think Arabella or Annabella are lightly nicer than Arianna.

I only wanted a name starting and ending in an A for DD. Other names I liked were Anastasia, Anoushka, Annalise, Aurelia, & Saskia, Tatiana, Claudia.

Think about what it might be shortened to. Arabella = Bella, Annabella = Anna or Bella. What diminutive do you like best?

I like Arabella. I'm also a fan of Ariadne

Repeatedlydoingthetwist Tue 30-Apr-13 20:15:17

Weirdly enough I have Arianna earmarked for my little lady to be, and my greatest fear is that someone will someone name their baby this before she arrives. I feel better reading all of the 'name her that anyway' posts here! Having said that I would like a back up, and I think I really like Aurelia, but am unsure of pronunciation. Am I right in thinking its Or-ray-lee-a?!! (Dodgy phonetics, sorry!)

mrsvandertramp Tue 30-Apr-13 20:21:00

That's how I'd pronounce Aurelia. Another similar name is Allegra.

Ariane is a version of Arianna which can be pronounced differently, and, quite honestly, is nicer <not biased>

Laquila Wed 01-May-13 07:36:29

I LOVE Aurelia (either pronounced Oh-RAY-lia or maybe Oh-RELL-lia).

I do like Arianne too and think that if that was your first choice you should stick with it, but I can understand why ou might not really want to now.

FWIW, I much prefer Annabel or Annabella to Arabella. I also like Amabel and Amalia.

Gwennan Wed 01-May-13 10:43:16

How about:
Oriana (o-RYAH-nah, according to the Internet)

The Daily Mail reliably informs me that Imogen Thomas has named her baby Ariana Siena so don't be surprised if it peaks a bit amongst those that like to read trashy celeb magazines!

I want to tell you to stick to your guns but if you live near your friend and your girls are likely to be in the same school, it'd annoy me.

I like Arabella and Annabel (but Annabella is too frilly for me and I'm not sure about Ariella).

Thank you for ur advice girlies.... decided to go for something completely dif in the end and put it to bed once and for all!! smile

ncc85 Thu 09-May-13 20:55:04

Oh and laquila my great grandma was Amabel but another friend called her daughter that.... its my fault for being the last to have babies lol

JennyMakkers Thu 09-May-13 22:31:25

I like Arianne more than Arianna - that extra a at the end ruins it. Same with Annabel / Annabella -
Arabella makes me think of Arabella Buckley from the Enid Blyton books! Not keen. What's short for Arabella? Arry? Prefer Annabella to Arabella. What was the other name again? Ariella. Again, I'd make it simpler by sticking to Ariel (pronounced Aree-elle)

BaconAndAvocado Tue 04-Jun-13 14:32:29

Arabella is an extremely gorgeous name. When we were considering it for our DD it was termed an "aspirational" name on here.

What's wrong with having aspirations I say?!

ariane5 Tue 04-Jun-13 14:40:14

If you like arianna atick with it!

Lovely name smile

ariane5 Tue 04-Jun-13 14:40:50

Stick not atick!
