Girl's name Minnie could be short for?

Please help me find a girl's name that Minnie could be short for. My 4 kids and I love the name but DH won't agree unless we find a "sensible" name it could be short for. He has already discounted Willamina (my favourite), Jasmine, Minerva(!) and a few others that sound too similar to Malina (2nd daughter's name). DH is Indian and I am English so names that fit into both cultures would be brilliant (the other 4 kids names fit into both). Failing that, perhaps names that Marnie/Mani could be short for as I quite like that too, but again, DH thinks it's too much of a nickname and wants a long version. PLEASE help as baby number 5 is now 4 weeks old and I have to register her next week!

I really wouldn't.

Slang for vulva where I live.

Girls names with "min" in them here. Mina/Meena is a bit more elegant than Minnie, but it is very similar sounding to your older dd.

Here's a similar list for girls names with 'man' in them, Amanda being the most obvious.

Marnie is a name in it's own right, the root is Marina, but that is way too similar to Malina! Personally I'd look for a name that didn't begin with M or have a long 'ee' sound.

Miranda

If you do it don't ever move to Cumbria, girl version of Willy here.

MooMooMama Tue 23-Apr-13 17:42:49

Tehmina? I think it's a Persian name - that could be shortened to Minnie?

Hedwig3 Tue 23-Apr-13 17:46:37

The one I know is Minesha.

VBisme Tue 23-Apr-13 17:51:09

As she's the youngest you could just nickname her Minnie anyway.

It doesn't need to link to a name.smile

NaturalBlondeYeahRight Tue 23-Apr-13 18:01:55

Minnie is a nickname for Amelia (Minnie driver)

TwinTum Tue 23-Apr-13 18:06:52

I know a Minnie short for Dominique
Dominica
Araminta

xigris Tue 23-Apr-13 18:09:26

Minerva? I love Minnie <do not answer that Nick!> smile

xigris Tue 23-Apr-13 18:11:51

D'oh! Didn't see that you'd discounted Minerva. Sorry. What about Ameena for the Indian connection?

Bananasinfadedpjs Tue 23-Apr-13 18:16:07

Always Mary-Anne or Marianne in my family, shortened to Minnie. But perhaps that is a bit similar too?

nextphase Tue 23-Apr-13 18:17:49

Not meeting the Indian connection, but I know an Imogen who goes by Minnie for family and close friends

sunshine401 Tue 23-Apr-13 18:22:21

I thought Minnie was from Mary?? However could be very wrong. When I was at school Many moons ago, one of my friends was known as "Minnie" but her real name was Mary-Rose.

Astley Tue 23-Apr-13 19:00:00

Minetta

millymae Tue 23-Apr-13 19:17:31

I 'googled' and Minnie showed up as a shortened version of Minissha and Hermione. A bit more digging revealed that there is an Indian actress called Minissha Lamba.

Tickledyellow Tue 23-Apr-13 19:30:08

I also know an Imogen who gets shortened to Minnie. She is 7 and likes having her formal name and her nickname too

jaminthemiddle Tue 23-Apr-13 19:32:23

I know a Marnie - full name marianna.

BJC44 Tue 23-Apr-13 20:37:26

Minnie is beautiful! I think it would be a sensible nickname for Melanie. That has a modern and timeless feel to it and it bit more substance for her when she is an adult. I also know a Millie that is shortened form for Emelia. Close enough if he doesn't like Minnie.

TiggerWearsATriteSmile Tue 23-Apr-13 20:44:09

Amelia is lovely.
As another poster suggested, name her whatever you like and call her Minnie anyway.
I call DD2 Tilly and it isn't remotely similar to her very old Irish name, it's just a NN.

TeaAndCakeOrDeath Tue 23-Apr-13 22:03:37

Er*min*trude smile

TeaAndCakeOrDeath Tue 23-Apr-13 22:04:38

Er min trude

Do check that it isn't a word for female genitqls in your area- it is round here. A Minnie started in my ds's school in year 2, and had a very difficult time for a while.

TeaAndCakeOrDeath Tue 23-Apr-13 22:06:26

Or Yasmin?

Rockinhippy Tue 23-Apr-13 22:06:55

Our friends DD is a Minnie, her full name is Jasmine

MacaYoniAndCheese Tue 23-Apr-13 22:11:22

I think Minnie is a lovely name smile. Go for it!

Autocorrect wanted to change Minnie to Amino...should you want to pursue scientific names grin.

OutragedFromLeeds Tue 23-Apr-13 22:13:37

How about Yoni?

MacaYoniAndCheese Tue 23-Apr-13 22:15:52

Ooh...even better!

AgathaPinchBottom Tue 23-Apr-13 22:17:28

I have a friend called Minnie - it's short for Mariah

Minge.

grin

Mariannesmum Tue 23-Apr-13 23:18:02

Minnie is a gorgeous nickname. I would second any of the Mary names as a formal option.

My Dd Marianne is known as Minnie by family and friends.
She may prefer Mari or Marnie as nicknames when she is older. Always good to have options.

mylittlepuds Wed 24-Apr-13 01:53:54

It means female bits where I live blush

MyShoofly Wed 24-Apr-13 02:40:07

Minuette?

Minnie....all I can think of is the mouse. Sorry.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper Wed 24-Apr-13 03:01:03

I think your DH is wise/kind to insist on a longer name, since Minnie has very definite connotations for a lot of people.

I'd never heard of the Minnie-as-slang-for-vulva thing until I came onto MN, but apparently it's extremely widespread.

Panzee Wed 24-Apr-13 03:54:41

Is Mnnie a name for vulva because of the Mickey/penis association? smile

CheerfulYank Wed 24-Apr-13 03:57:33

Jessamine?
Araminta?
Marnie short for Margaret?

Gugglebum Wed 24-Apr-13 04:42:10

I was also going to say Amelia, and I know of a Jessamine who goes by Minnie sometimes. ( pn Jess-uh-min or Jess-uh-meen)

Amsr Fri 26-Apr-13 10:15:06

Still love Wilhelmina/Willamina best! Hoping I can persuade DH. Would it be wrong to spell it the second way?

amessagetoyouYoni Fri 26-Apr-13 10:51:34

The only little Minnie I know is Mia on her birth cert.

fussychica Fri 26-Apr-13 14:42:54

Mouse - sorry not helpful

NotAnotherPackedLunch Fri 26-Apr-13 14:48:33

Fanjomina?
Please don't do this to your daughter no matter how nice a name Minnie seems.
