Dh doesn't like it. And, it is way out from all the girls names I usually like....but I just can't get it out of my head. Think It's classically (sp?) beautiful.

(Not even pg yet btw...just musing!)

LittleBairn Mon 22-Apr-13 21:59:44

Love it, classical plus you can have a little Meri

ellesabe Mon 22-Apr-13 22:00:41

I love it...

jkklpu Mon 22-Apr-13 22:01:24

Grey's anatomy

FriedSprout Mon 22-Apr-13 22:09:52

Very beautiful, and would be lovely shortened too.

5madthings Mon 22-Apr-13 22:11:27

Love it, it was on my list, dp said no. My dd is called Merryn, do similar and can be shortened to merry smile

I think it is a bit unisex.

Merryn is pretty, yes.

ttcnumero3 Mon 22-Apr-13 23:04:17

I really don't like the name edith ...so I don't like that it's in there.

Family would shorten it so it's good that it has a nice short version...

PreciousPuddleduck Mon 22-Apr-13 23:06:41

Lovely name but reminds me if Meredith Kercher...

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Mon 22-Apr-13 23:08:08

Male name in Wales, I believe, if that affects your thoughts!

I hate it more than I hate any other name in the world. Sorry.

ttcnumero3 Mon 22-Apr-13 23:16:38

Well, the last 3 posts are very helpful in putting me off. My dh will be very grateful!!

frecklemum Mon 22-Apr-13 23:21:45

I have a Meredith- nn Merry. When we told people at 1st- we got some very luke warm responses- now she is 6- she really suits her name and we have only met one other. It is different, without being too weird plus people can pronounce it as well smile

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper Mon 22-Apr-13 23:27:47

I don't like it - can't pinpoint why. Neither the sound nor the way it looks written down.

I adore Merryn though, have always thought that was a lovely name.

jellybeans Mon 22-Apr-13 23:28:22

Reminded me of the sad news stories also. Right away.

DonDrapersAltrEgoBigglesDraper Mon 22-Apr-13 23:29:33

I really like Edith though - I have totally come round to this name. My old neighbour has a beautiful little brunette toddler called Edith and that has completely changed my opinion of it.

Edie is a sweet nickname, too.

KittenofDoom Mon 22-Apr-13 23:44:09

Not keen, I've encountered it almost exclusively as a surname, and I dislike surnames as names for girls.

Don't care for Merry as a nn either, sounds like a euphemism for pissed!

I like Judith though.

LeoandBoosmum Mon 22-Apr-13 23:47:00

Love it - it's one of my faves! Don't like any shortened versions though.

MummyBurrows Tue 23-Apr-13 00:09:58

When ever I see the name Meredith I instantly think of Meredith Brooks and start singing her "I'm a bitch..." Song in my head...Sorry! Aside from that,I can't say I'm keen on the name...its not girly enough for my liking but that's just me and my personal tastes in girls names!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams Tue 23-Apr-13 00:23:04

I like it, for girls and boys grin

I've never come across one shortened though, the only Meri I know is a Meriel.

ttcnumero3 Tue 23-Apr-13 09:59:50

I've never heard of it as a male name or as a surname... Ever. If I did, in real life, that alone would succeed in putting me off. Traditionally, I've always favoured girlie names .. Especially those ending in ie /y or a. So Meredith is a big deviation!

What I want is a name that is not too unusual/ made up but that is not well used....and is beautiful... ! I thought Meredith fitted that. Sounds like it depends greatly on what part of the UK you live in...

LittleBairn Tue 23-Apr-13 10:11:25

Never heard of it as a surname either, it's a traditional well established first name I would be surprised if many people thought it was a surname being used as a first name.

Hazelbrowneyes Tue 23-Apr-13 10:12:19

It's my favourite name ever.

KittenofDoom Tue 23-Apr-13 10:13:02

I love Judith/Judy too. I wish I had been brave enough to use it.

We really like it and it's top of our list for new baby.

But every other name we have chosen for our kids has immediately become more popular, and I have heard quite a few people mention it, on here and in RL, so I wouldn't place any bets on it being particularly unique!

BikeRunSki Tue 23-Apr-13 17:34:51

I think of it as a male name.

I know a lovely (female) Meredith aged 20. Great name - classy and feminine without being too girly! smile

SadPander Tue 23-Apr-13 18:30:50

Love it! (but would probably go for the Welsh spelling) Love Meri for short and have only heard it as a girls name where I live (South Wales), though I have heard others say it is traditionally a male name.

Personally I am moving slightly toward Meryn instead though as I do worry that people may associate the name with the murder - although I'm sure people you know would soon come to only associate it with your daughter, and that issue would fade.

intheshed Tue 23-Apr-13 23:04:46

I know a gorgeous little girl called Meredith, nicknamed Merry. It totally suits her. The parents are Welsh, so it clearly isn't always a male name in Wales!

It doesn't make me think of that awful case, I don't really understand that argument. For any name there are bound to have been/will be in the future, other people, with good or bad associations, with that name.

For example, I know a Jamie, the name doesn't make me think of the Jamie Bulger case. I know several little Madeleines, it doesn't make me think of Madeleine McCann. The name Rose doesn't remind me of Rose West. Etc etc....

frangipan Tue 23-Apr-13 23:11:55

grin at last grin I personally think it is beautiful.

NKinDXB Tue 23-Apr-13 23:29:25

It made the final 2 name choices for our DD and we ended up using it as middle name. She is Zoe Meredith Rose. Whenever we tell people it gets a favourable reaction, unusual but pretty.

saintmerryweather Tue 23-Apr-13 23:40:25

I love it, but one of my favourite names is edith. meri or edie as a nickname

sashh Wed 24-Apr-13 06:11:59

I like the name but it makes me think Kerchner.

sashh Wed 24-Apr-13 08:18:19

Kercher, not Kerchner. Poor woman I can't even spell her name right.

MsJupiterJones Wed 24-Apr-13 10:08:44

I think it's a beautiful name, I know a little Meredith (Merry). Surprised at the mixed reaction on here.

I love it - also love Rhiannon.

Alisvolatpropiis Wed 24-Apr-13 18:15:54

It's lovely.

I've only ever seen the actual Welsh spelling, Meredydd, used on men/ as a surname. It's also pronounced slightly differently.

Yika Wed 24-Apr-13 20:41:30

I think it's a lovely name, I love the feel and shape of it as I say it.

Ihatepeas Wed 24-Apr-13 23:36:44

Love it.. I know a two yr old Meredith known as Mezi or mez. Really suits her! Gorgeous name!!

I really really like it - as long as your surname isn't Blake.

JessieEssex Thu 25-Apr-13 15:21:15

I love it, was on our shortlist for DD2 (we went with Penelope in the end)
I do know a male Meredith but I wouldn't let that put you off.

gunsnraisins Thu 25-Apr-13 22:05:01

I have a Meredith, nn Merry. The only thing that bugs me is that lots of people think she's called Mary hmm. Although I'm sure that will change once she starts school.

I had the name on my list for a long time, before Meredith Kercher was tragically in the news. To me it felt wrong to not use it just because something bad happened to someone with the same name.

CitizenOscar Thu 25-Apr-13 22:40:20

It was my grandmother's name, and she was generally known as Merry. Which she wasn't, very (merry, I mean, character-wise), but that's the risk you run. I have to say aside from that I quite like it as a name. I think a Meredith could do anything, go anywhere.

DoctorAnge Thu 25-Apr-13 22:51:53

Simply beautiful name.

ttcnumero3 Fri 26-Apr-13 00:24:09

Overall,a very positive response! Will see if I can work on dh...grin

littleginger Fri 26-Apr-13 00:37:18

I used to hate this name - made me think of some old witch not a beautiful little baby but I've come full circle and actually love it.

I wouldn't bother about the likelihood of people thinking of the Meredith kercher story as once the name is linked to your daughter that is the most prominent that springs to mind. I know a Myra and had to have it pointed out to me that she unfortunately shares her names with Hindley!

sleepywombat Fri 26-Apr-13 05:29:29

I like it & would consider it if I ever had a dd. Its a surname in my family (great grandmother's), pronounced MerEDith rather than MERedith.

Beautiful! Ds4 was to be Meredith if he'd been a girl, but alas.... Would defo use it if I had dc5, but that's not happening.

weeblueberry Fri 26-Apr-13 11:45:18

My DP loves it but it was the name of one of my ex's so....

sashh Sat 27-Apr-13 08:24:14

Will see if I can work on dh

Do be aware that there is going to be a third trial for the murder of Meredith Kercher so there may be some publicity.

Although the last publicity seemed to ignore the poor woman in favor of the alleged murderers.

Rhubarbgarden Sat 27-Apr-13 08:34:36

I think it's beautiful.

outtolunchagain Sat 27-Apr-13 08:35:35

I love it

Tinker2013 Sun 28-Apr-13 06:54:27

Love it, also love nn as Merry. I'm due in 8 days and if I have a girl she will be called Meredith!

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit Sun 28-Apr-13 07:15:10

Love Meredith, gorgeous name. In fact am a bit envy I didn't think of it for did.

Svrider Sun 28-Apr-13 09:05:27

I think people will link it with kercher especially if there's going to be a 3rd trial
Fwiw a girl has started ds nursery called Madeleine
The whole mccann story is yet again a hot topic in the playground

I'd think again op, sorry

Laquila Sun 28-Apr-13 09:27:42

Certainly the Kercher tragedy wasn't the first thing I thought of.

It's a lovely name, and I've only ever heard it used as a girl's name (or a surname, pronounced MerEDith).

Love Merryn too, and Merriel.
