Straw poll: Do you prefer Elliot or Milo?

(74 Posts)

Please don't tell me if you hate them both, I would just really like to know which you prefer.

We only have a week left before we have to register our Ds, and for some reason, we just can't name him... We have whittled it down to these two!

OrlaKiely Mon 22-Apr-13 10:51:01

I like Elliott but Milo - isn't that from the Phantom Tollbooth? In which case pretty cool smile

It all depends on your surname, middle name, reasons etc.

I couldn't have a name without a good reason iyswim.

Guntie Mon 22-Apr-13 10:52:39

I prefer Milo :-)

katkoala Mon 22-Apr-13 10:53:06

Milo

Haylebop12 Mon 22-Apr-13 10:53:26

Elliot.

Although I know a lovely little Milo I can't get the tweenies connection out my head.

I like both for special reasons... Both personal, and literature related smile

Middle name is one syllable, shortened version of an old classic name, which was my Grandad's name, and surname is two syllable & begins with an 'H'.. .Pretty unusual name, so won't put it here!

Thanks for your reply smile

Cross posted with lots there. Thank you!... Yes the Tweenies confection is my main concern with Milo!

...or connection, even! Dam my fat fingers!

thermalsinapril Mon 22-Apr-13 11:02:44

I like both, it would be hard to choose one! But I think Elliot would sound better with your middle name and surname.

ben5 Mon 22-Apr-13 11:03:43

Milo is a drink!! Just be careful if you think he might want to travel to Oz one day

Elliot is lovely

Really ben5? I didn't know that! Thanks for letting me know!

I like both, but don't LOVE either!... Oh, what a faff... It was easy with Dd!

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 22-Apr-13 11:12:53

Love 'em both.
I couldn't choose.
DS2 is Elliot Milo grin

Well, what can I say Olivia... You clearly have fab taste! smile

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 22-Apr-13 11:16:23

PS congrats btw

Ah, thanks! He is a lovely little squishy nameless bundle!

«penguins tries hard to remain cool, while secretly feeling all excited that Olivia has commented on my fred! Am a step closer to royalty now, I feel!»

OrlaKiely Mon 22-Apr-13 11:29:25

Elliot Milo Mumsnet has a lovely ring to it grin

grin

MummyBurrows Mon 22-Apr-13 14:29:11

I personally prefer Elliot,I think it would sound better...Milo one syllable two syllable sounds a bit short iyswim, but Elliot one syllable two syllable seems to have a lovely ring to it smile xx

SirDoris Mon 22-Apr-13 14:35:36

Elliot

fussychica Mon 22-Apr-13 14:45:25

Elliot - from what you've said re middle & surnames

FortyFacedFuckers Mon 22-Apr-13 14:46:53

Milo was on my list when I had DS

Floralnomad Mon 22-Apr-13 14:48:23

Why don't you just give him a name you love ! Elliot if I had to choose from those two.

Blu Mon 22-Apr-13 14:52:01

Milo.

I met an Emil last night - a good blend of your choices, and pretty cool!

OliviaMumsnet (MNHQ) Mon 22-Apr-13 15:53:31

Elliot Milo Mumsnet has a lovely ring to it grin

grin

Manoodledo Mon 22-Apr-13 21:46:09

Elliot, but I'm biased because I have one.

MineOrk Mon 22-Apr-13 21:49:35

Elliot

LeChatRouge Mon 22-Apr-13 21:50:44

Milo, one of my favourite names. Cool dude, unusual but not too way out.

TheChaoGoesMu Mon 22-Apr-13 22:02:04

Milo. I love that name. Elliot is nice too, but Milo is my favourite.

Trill Mon 22-Apr-13 22:11:37

Elliot

Milo

pygmy Tue 23-Apr-13 02:45:05

Milo

DS 1 has middle name of Elliot. Couldn't use as first name as rhymes with siblings name.

DC2 if a boy when arrives will be Milo.

I don't think of twenties connection at all.

You wouldn't think of Bella as being a tweenie name or jake!

lottiegarbanzo Tue 23-Apr-13 04:30:50

Milo by a mile.

I'm of the can't stand surnames as first names persuasion. I think Milo is really lovely and a distinctive sound, not easily confused.

Auntlinny Tue 23-Apr-13 04:36:52

Elliot. Milo is the name of a sweet hot drink, not only in oz, but in nz too! A bit like using the name Cadbury

Gugglebum Tue 23-Apr-13 04:50:25

Milo for me too. I love that you could use Miles as a nn, the same way a Lily is often Lils.

scarecrow22 Tue 23-Apr-13 04:53:15

Milo.

gottogetup Tue 23-Apr-13 07:33:43

Milo by mile(o)'s x

BlueStarsAtNight Tue 23-Apr-13 08:09:24

Elliot. I like it better and sounds like it flows best with the middle name and surname syllables!

CPtart Tue 23-Apr-13 08:14:55

Elliot

Sorry for coming back to the thread late, but thank you for your replies... Right, well it looks pretty even, which is nice. Reassures me that neither is considered universally ridiculous!... Still undecided though! I think I am leaning towards Elliot, & DH is leaning towards Milo!

Bonsoir Tue 23-Apr-13 08:27:26

I hate Elliott.

OrbisNonSufficit Tue 23-Apr-13 08:47:32

Elliot. Milo is a chocolate drink...

Crikey bonsoir! Is there a reason, or that you just don't like the sound of it??

AtiaoftheJulii Tue 23-Apr-13 08:57:33

Love Milo, but it really doesn't work with my kids' surname, lol.

I dislike Elliot too, just one of those names that gives me an irrational yuck reaction.

Bonsoir Tue 23-Apr-13 09:53:38

Elliott sounds like a gay poodle. Awful.

williaminajetfighter Tue 23-Apr-13 22:15:23

Love Elliot. Cutest little boy on the TV show 30something from the late 80s. Always fanciest it after that.

Milo is FAR too popular!

mummytomoo Tue 23-Apr-13 22:22:30

Both are nice but I prefer Elliot. Good luck deciding!

barnet Tue 23-Apr-13 22:26:04

Elliot

Jojay Tue 23-Apr-13 22:26:06

Milo. I too don't like the surname as a first name thing.

And Eli is too feminine sounding to be a decent nickname...

Milo, definitely.

Milo. Totally different 'kind' of names IMO.

Oh dear!... We have narrowed it down to a gay poodle or hot chocolate... Poor kid!

We.are still undecided, but have to register him next Tuesdayshock

I think we will probably use the one we don't go for as another middle name!

Just out of interest, what 'kinds' of name do people think they are?... I realise I may ne over thinking this now!

Lozario Wed 24-Apr-13 21:17:07

Milo.

Slavetothechild Wed 24-Apr-13 21:19:16

I think they both sound like nice well mannered little boys smile . These sort of names make me think of children playing with wooden toys and wearing sweet linen sailor suits !! No idea why but you did ask smile

Milo is probably from a professional but slightly culturally unusual family. Maybe they listen to interesting music or spend their holidays digging ditches in Eastern Europe.

Elliott has a brother Lucas and sisters Lily and Ruby. His parents do what everyone else does.

Can you tell which I prefer? grin

Ha... I quite like that slavetothechild !

horry I think we are.somewhere between those two!grin

Thanks for everyone's replies... I'm not sure if i'll be brave enough top come back and tell everyone which we went for though!! smile

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Wed 24-Apr-13 22:19:57

Elliott.

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Wed 24-Apr-13 22:20:53

And Elliott Milo flows better than Milo Elliott, unless you are having Milo John Elliott or something.

Good point thedoctorofsnatch (brill name btw!)

We have booked our apt with the registrars, so not long 'til D-day!

Theironfistofarkus Fri 26-Apr-13 09:45:46

Milo, definitely.

Or doctrine, even!

We're booked to register him tomorrow... Still undecided. He'll be named after the registrar at this rate!!

Thanks for your input. Wish us luck! grin

Snazzynewyear Mon 29-Apr-13 21:21:46

Elliot. Do I get the casting vote? grin

MILO

Ikeameatballs Mon 29-Apr-13 21:24:41

Elliot. Love it.

Oscarandelliesmum Mon 29-Apr-13 21:24:53

Milo

rosieposey Mon 29-Apr-13 21:29:11

I have a Milo - it's a really lovely name. DS 2 was going to be Elliot but in the end i went with Caspar so i couldn't choose either grin If i was to have another DS (no chance) It would probably be Elliot but obviously i chose Milo first.

Elliot! HAS to be Elliot, such a beautiful name.

BTW is there a rule about the one or two L thing?

wiltingfast Mon 29-Apr-13 21:36:22

MILO

Milo milo milo milo!

Just do it ;)

blondieminx Mon 29-Apr-13 21:42:08

Elliott is more classic, Milo is getting quite popular. I think Milo is more likely to date, too.

EllenParsons Mon 29-Apr-13 21:43:26

Elliot. Lovely name smile

I also quite like Milo but I prefer Miles.

The variable spelling of El(l)iot(t) is a vote against.

Redorwhitejusthaveboth Mon 29-Apr-13 22:35:04

Milo smile I have a milo who is nearly 5 and every time I say his name I still feel all warm and glowey that he's got such a cool name... 1 person has mentioned the tweenies thing and 1 person the drink thing - and that's in 5 years.....grin

thermalsinapril Mon 29-Apr-13 23:05:59

I think Elliot Milo flows better than Milo Elliot.

Leafmould Mon 29-Apr-13 23:27:43

Miles is better than milo.

I agree.
