Still not settled on names and due any moment- don't know what flavour. Trying for traditional Scottish names that are not too popular, but not to far out, and work well outside of Scotland.

Girls names we find easier and the shortlist is only:
- Flora
- Ishbel

Boys, we are still struggling a bit- like lots of names but not sure we LOVE them. The shortlist is:
- Ranald (current forerunner)
- Archie (possibly too popular both south and north of the border)
- Hamish (stupidly tried this on 3 Scottish male friends some months ago- think they are still rolling round the floor laughing confused)
- Murdo
- Cameron (not sure about surnames as first names)

So, what d'ya reckon???

Love Ishbel and Ranald. Also love Hamish but seems like the reaction wasn't great grin

pictish Thu 11-Apr-13 18:49:26

Flora was my mother's name. I love it.

Out of the boy's names I like Hamish the best...I know a couple of Hamishes, and our ds1 would have been one were it not for the fact that one of them is already in the family.

My least fave is Cameron as round here (Edinburgh and Lothians) it's a (sorry to say it) chavvy name.

Cameron will always be found getting up to no good with Jayden and Kyle.

MissAnnersley Thu 11-Apr-13 18:49:50

I love Ishbel and Ranald too.

I think Hamish is a lovely name - I know two in RL, both Scottish.

Geordieminx Thu 11-Apr-13 18:51:52

What about Fraser? Or Euan? Or Struan?

Love Ishbel... I was going to be a Flora.. 6 months later the margarine came out... I'm glad I'm not a Flora.

Heather?

Ishbel is gorgeous. Can't tell you how much I love it! smile

The boys' names aren't doing much for me, sorry. I like Cameron but not whilst that idiot is PM.

StrangeGlue Thu 11-Apr-13 18:56:20

Flora, ranald and hamish

Ishbel is unusual but has that forever spelling it out and still getting Isabel on paperwork etc problem

FriggFRIGG Thu 11-Apr-13 19:01:57

Ishbel and Hamish are my favourite by far.

Please not Murdo...all I hear is murder...

Kittykatmacbill Thu 11-Apr-13 19:23:18

Love ishbel and hamish, archie is cute but archibald is nice too.

What about Fraser?

shellyf Thu 11-Apr-13 20:14:50

Flora and Hamish or Hector

mum47 Thu 11-Apr-13 20:16:45

Love Flora. DS has a friend called Hamish, he is a lovely, cheeky boy and I love his name.

dubai71 Thu 11-Apr-13 21:17:15

Thank you very much ladies. Was going slightly mad just saying the names to ourselves so really helpful to get your input. Am pleased to see Ranald seems to have gone down well. Pictish- love your comments grin, Cameron now firmly off the shortlist! Kitty & Geordie- I also like Fraser but cannot use it as a first name for family reasons. Thanks again!

MacaroniSaysShetlandPony Thu 11-Apr-13 21:27:31

How about Ailsa?

picnicbasketcase Thu 11-Apr-13 21:30:31

I like Flora, Archie and Hamish.

forgetmenots Thu 11-Apr-13 22:57:55

I'm using Angus and I like a lot of your names, Ishbel is lovely smile I also like Eilish (as opposed to Eilidh).

Love Archie, Hamish and Murdo. Not keen on Cameron or Ranald.

I also had Magnus, Struan, Ruairidh and Lachlan on my lists if that helps smile

Noggie Thu 11-Apr-13 23:12:32

Love your names- ESP like Ranald and flora grin

LoganMummy Thu 11-Apr-13 23:14:27

Love Ruaridh, Archie, Lachlan and Logan.

I used to love Cameron but I can't stand Cammy so that's a no.

thistlelicker Thu 11-Apr-13 23:23:48

My
Dog is Hamish

DessieLou Thu 11-Apr-13 23:29:02

Ishbel is nice but not keen on flora, I'm afraid. I like Cameron from your boys list but had no idea it is considered chavvy in some parts. How about Fifer instead?

DessieLou Thu 11-Apr-13 23:30:07

Or Brodie? I know a very cute wee Brodie!

pinkr Fri 12-Apr-13 23:06:22

If our wee one was a boy the name was Fergus!

forgetmenots Fri 12-Apr-13 23:10:57

Love it pinkr, on my list smile

Blondie1984 Fri 12-Apr-13 23:20:01

If I ever have a little girl I will call her Iona

pinkr Sat 13-Apr-13 02:52:40

Fergus is traditional but under used and the only boy name we could agree one! grin

thistlelicker Sat 13-Apr-13 04:24:37

Has anyone mentioned mhairi ? Spelling prob wrong

raisah Sat 13-Apr-13 04:29:17

Love your names apart from Murdo.
More suggestions:
Elspeth
Catriona

dementedma Sat 13-Apr-13 22:12:22

Wouldn't have said Ranald was Scottish, but its OK.Cameron is horrible.
For boys, I like Angus, Ruaridh, Iain,Alastair,
For girls, Iona, Flora, Ailish, Ishbel

peggyblackett Sat 13-Apr-13 22:15:23

Callum? Hamish? Sandy? ( nn for Alexander)

holeinmytights Sun 14-Apr-13 11:52:38

The ishbel i knew was nicknamed Pishbel. Sorry. Flora v pretty though.

TidyDancer Sun 14-Apr-13 12:05:15

The only name on your list that I like is Flora.

JollyPurpleGiant Sun 14-Apr-13 12:05:25

I love Murdo and Flora.

DS is Harris. DC2 might be Ramsay.

Geordieminx Sun 14-Apr-13 12:07:14

I think kids always come up with "nicknames" Flora.. Spreads easily? wink

My cousin is called Belinda.. Only found out a few years ago she hated her name because she got called "bell-ender" at school shock

MrsMaryCooper Sun 14-Apr-13 12:07:39

I like Ishbel

(Elspeth is nice too and similar)

I like Archie & Cameron. I am in quite a good catchment area in Edinburgh and there are a few Camerons here too - so not chavvy in my opinion.

TheGirlOnTheLanding Sun 14-Apr-13 12:11:36

Love Ishbel, Hamish and Archie but Archie is a really quite popular at the moment so you may be better steering clear.

How about Innes, Keir, or my favourite, Gregor?

TigerSwallowtail Sun 14-Apr-13 12:15:23

Cameron is the only one I like.

LadyBeagleEyes Sun 14-Apr-13 12:19:15

I was going to say Fraser but I see you've ruled that out.
How about Ruaridh, my second choice for ds who is a Fraser.
I also love Ishbel.

Theas18 Sun 14-Apr-13 12:21:20

Ishbel is nice but remember isobel and all the variations are very popular in the UK

ItsYonliMe Sun 14-Apr-13 12:28:24

All the names you have suggested are lovely (although Cameron is a bit overused IMO). A bit more unusual is Harris and my cousin has just called her son Garve - that's nice and unusual too.

BNmum Sun 14-Apr-13 13:47:33

Flora is nice as is Elspeth that has also been mentioned.

I like Hamish for boy but maybe i'm missing something if others have laughed their socks of when you suggested it. What about Vaughn (not sure if Scottish or welsh origin)? Monty (Montgomery)?
