Is Monty Fox a cool name or too out there for real life?

We have been calling the bump Monty ever since we found out it was a boy and now hubby seriously likes the idea of it as a name - obviously would be Montgomery on birth certificate. With surname Fox I think you need a few syllables and part of me thinks it could work: good nickname, traditional but not popular and could work from playroom to boardroom. But I don't know if I have the courage to go through with it! Fwiw other options are Sebastian (which I love but is same initial as hubby and also name of good friend's baby so I'm not sure) and Douglas. Middle name will be Patrick after FIL.

Any advice much appreciated!

soaccidentprone Mon 08-Apr-13 16:08:51

I love itgrin

BottledWaterandFags Mon 08-Apr-13 16:09:58

I love Douglas!!

I'm sorry but Monty Fox sounds like the head master of a posh boarding school which might form the backdrop for a teenagers programme about a crime fighting schoolboy duo.

PipkinsPal Mon 08-Apr-13 16:11:26

I'm not too keen. I knew a dog called Monty and he was horrible. Used to roll around in cowpats. Sorry, name association again.

NumberOneNumpty Mon 08-Apr-13 16:22:49

Montgomery Fox is a brilliant name. It's the sort of name cool detectives in crime novels have. And Monty would make a refreshing change to all the Alfies, Charlies, Harrys etc. out there whilst being a proper known name.

dothraki Mon 08-Apr-13 16:33:26

Ha - I thought cool detective too - or superhero grin - much cooler than ^

elvisola Mon 08-Apr-13 16:40:27

Montgomery Fox is a great name!

Coconutty Mon 08-Apr-13 16:42:31

I kinda like it.

Mumcentreplus Mon 08-Apr-13 16:48:01

Spy name..grin

BNmum Mon 08-Apr-13 16:50:39

Love it, you should definitely go with it! Ditto above sounds like cool detective.

ZolaBuddleia Mon 08-Apr-13 16:53:28

Absolutely love it! Fox is a fab surname. envy

LifeIsBetterInFlipFlops Mon 08-Apr-13 16:56:04

Love it...once I realised Fox was surname - I think it's great (and I have traditional taste in names).

Montgomery Fox is a James Bond name - it's great.

Mumcentreplus Mon 08-Apr-13 17:00:23

The names Fox...Monty..Fox..<twiddles tache >

BuggedByJake Mon 08-Apr-13 17:03:08

Love it. I really like Monty but dh thought it was too 'try hard'. Monty Fox is a brilliant name grin

MolotovCocktail Mon 08-Apr-13 17:04:24

It is very cool to my ears, but I can only see it working if Monty is in a 'naice' school, and not the kind of shit comprehensive I went to, IYSWIM. Very much depends on your/his social circle.

Really, really like Patrick, too smile

2beornot Mon 08-Apr-13 17:06:41

I love it. Wish I had a surname that was cool!

That's fab. I know a Sandy Fox as well, which has the same sound to it. (she is also fab)smile

dizzyhoneybee Mon 08-Apr-13 17:07:32

go for it smile

BuggedByJake Mon 08-Apr-13 17:07:59

actually this is the best name I've heared in ages & a bit envy I can't use it.

dizzyhoneybee Mon 08-Apr-13 17:08:04

though, as an afterthought, be prepared for comments from people you know about "The Full Monty" grin

BuggedByJake Mon 08-Apr-13 17:09:09

Oh dizzy don't spoil it smile

NadiaWadia Mon 08-Apr-13 17:09:41

I'm not trying to be mean, but it could be seen as sounding like a glove puppet or cartoon character? Just the combination with your surname. Sebastian is great, BTW, and doesn't give this impression.

Caladria Mon 08-Apr-13 17:10:13

Douglas Fox has a magnificent 1940s detective ring to it.

MinnieBar Mon 08-Apr-13 17:10:25

Go for it!

WheresMyCow Mon 08-Apr-13 17:10:34

I like it grin

DioneTheDiabolist Mon 08-Apr-13 17:10:53

Oh I love it. It's pithy and memorable. If I were an employer I would certainly interview a Monty Fox.grin

Tigerbomb Mon 08-Apr-13 18:03:04

Monty Fox rocks.

skratta Mon 08-Apr-13 18:08:32

Love it..
I have a friend called Isaiah Storm. I always liked his name and am very jealous if anyone who has a cool nickname! We have Horan like that one direction guy sadly and it won't ever sound cool.

harleyd Mon 08-Apr-13 18:10:04

thats gotta be the best name ive seen on here. ever.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Mon 08-Apr-13 18:12:10

Monty Fox is a brilliant, cool name - Seb Fox is cool too, don't like Douglas.

3rdnparty Mon 08-Apr-13 18:13:33

love Monty and Montgomery Fox is fab- but there are a few Montys around here (w London) if that matters grin definitely not out there.

Also love Douglas fox but not so keen on Doug as a nn

catgirl1976 Mon 08-Apr-13 20:03:02

Brilliant name

5eggstremelychocaletymadeggs Mon 08-Apr-13 20:05:00

Absolutely love it!!! Fabulous name grin

TSSDNCOP Mon 08-Apr-13 20:08:40

Monty Fox has to be the coolest name ever.

DS would want to be his bestie, he loves a good name.

StoickTheVast Mon 08-Apr-13 20:09:34

I really like it.

It sort of sounds like a character in a book, though.

MERLYPUSS Mon 08-Apr-13 20:18:55

Montgommery Fox does sound like an action hero. Could he live up to his name? IMHO it is a bit Bear Grills - all rock climbing and killing his own dinner. Eitherr that or a Sherlock Holmes type.
It's a great name.
Not sure on the other 2.

ChompieMum Mon 08-Apr-13 20:22:37

Am a lone voice but I think it is ok if you are quite posh maybe but otherwise not.

Uppermid Mon 08-Apr-13 20:23:53

Fab name. I know a monty and he's a great kid

nectarini1983 Mon 08-Apr-13 20:24:49

Makes a nice change from Alfie/ Riley bla bla bla....

MrsGeologist Mon 08-Apr-13 20:25:23

Doooo iiiiiiit! It's an amazing name!

Viviennemary Mon 08-Apr-13 20:26:05

Douglas is a lot better than Monty. Monty is a pet's name.

bluebump Mon 08-Apr-13 20:43:51

My DS's surname is Fox, he has his first name and ended up with two middle names so all together it writes as T.H.E Fox. We didn't plan it, in fact my dad only spotted it days after we'd announce it - the lady registering him noticed too. (That'll out me!)

I love Monty Fox, it sounds great.

Mellymog Mon 08-Apr-13 20:46:05

I really like it. If he was in my class i would expect him to be a character.

sarahbean123 Mon 08-Apr-13 20:46:44

Awesome name!

aoife24 Mon 08-Apr-13 20:53:00

Monty Fox is indeed a very cool name, go for it, you know you want to!

tethersend Mon 08-Apr-13 20:54:47

Agreed; best name to ever grace this topic.

Monty Fox is a wonderful name! Douglas is awful though...

Ham69 Mon 08-Apr-13 21:52:37

Monty Fox- love it!

chicaguapa Mon 08-Apr-13 21:57:26

I like Monty Fox and Dougie Fox. They both sound quite American though.

KittenOfDoom Mon 08-Apr-13 23:03:45

Terrific name!

There's also Montague to get Monty (which I think is where the expression 'full monty' comes from - wasn't it a tailors/menswear shop, Montague Burton I think)

PelvicFloorClenchReminder Mon 08-Apr-13 23:07:59

I love Montgomery Fox so much I'm actually wishing it was my name grin Go for it!

Or Montmerency Fox?

He might need a teeny tiny baby monocle as a first present.
Possible a tiddley silver topped cane?
And you definitely need to sharpie on a moustache by about day three.

I love the name

catgirl1976 Mon 08-Apr-13 23:44:30

It's so good I am actually considering leaving DH, finding a man named Fox, marrying him and bringing forth a boy child just so I can use it grin

colditz Mon 08-Apr-13 23:53:27

Actually that is really really cool. Montgomery Fox, Private Investigator. Montgomery Fox, Olympic Champion. Dr Montgomery Fox.

I like it.

sashh Tue 09-Apr-13 04:46:00

I love it. It's the kind of name you can take anywhere and fit in.

Apparentlychilled Tue 09-Apr-13 04:51:21

I love it! And if he doesn't like it when he gets older, he can use his middle name. (Which isn't meant as a dig, I gave DS a name my DH was 90% about, on the basis that he got a v classic middle name to use if he didn't like his first name when he got bigger).

Go for it!

ScumbagCollegeDropout Tue 09-Apr-13 05:33:59

Love it!

Brilliant name smile

dizzyhoneybee Tue 09-Apr-13 07:33:04

If you do go for the name then you must buy him this

Bonsoir Tue 09-Apr-13 07:38:22

Monty isn't cool. Sebastian, Douglas and Patrick are not cool either.

Idreamofjeanie Tue 09-Apr-13 12:11:33

Wow, thank you so much for all the responses! Feeling a lot more comfortable about the name now although I take on board the comments that it's a name he'll have to live up to. Still have 4 weeks to go before we meet him and make the final decision.

Dizzyhoneybee - I am going to order that babygro right now!

ChompieMum Tue 09-Apr-13 13:29:09

I agree with Bonsoir. They are nice posh names so if that is what you are looking for they are great.

Good luck with the birth! Hope it all goes well.

MandragoraWurzelstock Tue 09-Apr-13 13:31:58

I like Montgomery but not Monty as it sounds very pretentious to me. Just associations - sorry.

rockinhippy Tue 09-Apr-13 13:42:56

Montgomery Fox has a real film star/Scientific genius ring to it - he's destined for greatness - GO FOR IT!!!

Rosebelle Tue 09-Apr-13 13:46:24

Montgomery Fox is an ah-maaaah-zing name!

Definitely definitely.

Douglas Fox doesn't "go". Doug Fox odd sounding and looking. Sebastian and Patrick - no.

Monty Fox is fabulous. if you were suggesting Fox as a middle name I might think that was try-hard but if your surname is actually Fox it is too good for words.

Montgomery/Monty Fox has winner's name written all over it. It is a positive, happy, powerful name. I do not think it is "too much" (if you knew me as a person in RL, my friends and fam would tell you I am the kind of person who tweaks things endlessly to get them "just right"... looks at 100 shades of white to get the "right white"... can tell if a picture is a millemetre off balance when nobody else can (the spirit rule is my best friend for proving me right so often!) Anyway, what I am trying to say is that I really think it's a great name without being too this, or too that. It's just a great name. and you can definitely get away with it and what's more you should. smile

Rosebelle Tue 09-Apr-13 13:48:17

PS I meant no to Patrick as a first name - it's a superfine middle name smile

Chocoflump Tue 09-Apr-13 14:00:12

LOVE it!!!

badtime Tue 09-Apr-13 16:23:04

I think Montague Fox sounds better than Montgomery.

fussychica Wed 10-Apr-13 17:28:31

yellowhousewithareddoor Wed 10-Apr-13 17:41:45

Pixieonthemoor Wed 10-Apr-13 20:00:17

Love this name! My ds is Lucian Fox (first, middle)

GmawFox Wed 09-Oct-13 04:45:43

I just had to let you know -- my youngest son who is now a successful graphic artist is named Montey Charles Fox. Montey is from my mother's family name - Montgomery and Charles is from his grandfather's name. We always got comments about how people really liked his name. And one last thing - he is a really cool guy.

RoadToTuapeka Wed 09-Oct-13 08:32:56

I love it too! Was not a fan of Montgomery but actually paired with Fox it's great.

Oriunda Wed 09-Oct-13 12:25:53

I love it. Great ring to it.

daughterofafarmer Wed 09-Oct-13 19:08:03

Amazballs name! I know a Freddie Fox and I thought that was cool, Monty is even better!

RoseHoney Wed 09-Oct-13 19:14:42

Did you go for the name in the end?
I love it but you do know its the name of the man in that kids film, big fat liar? grin

Coupon Thu 10-Oct-13 09:24:08

Reminds me of Michael J. Fox so I think it sounds quite film star ish.

capercaillie Thu 17-Oct-13 08:03:27

Also love Douglas and that also goes well with Fox.

Ehhn Thu 17-Oct-13 08:10:58

Just don't use Patrick as an alternative or else you'll have pat the fox... (Haven't read thread, realise this joke may have been made. Sorry...)

Cool name. Loving fox as surname. Lucky you!
