Excellent name

XBenedict Thu 07-Mar-13 20:03:16

Love it!

FiveGoMadInDorset Thu 07-Mar-13 20:03:17

I really like it.

BinarySolo Thu 07-Mar-13 20:04:40

One of my pet ducks is called Margot, as was my baby massage doll. I loved The Good Life.

Mintyy Thu 07-Mar-13 20:04:52

Fabulous name!

I knew a real life Margot in the 70s (when I was a child, I hasten to add). Very "Good Life".

louisianablue2000 Thu 07-Mar-13 20:05:08

Proper name. I love celebrities that use proper names. Far cooler than naming them after a fruit.

Snazzynewyear Thu 07-Mar-13 20:05:33

I like it!

Ginebra Thu 07-Mar-13 20:05:37

what is their first child called?

ceramicunicorn Thu 07-Mar-13 20:06:48

Lovely name

salvadory Thu 07-Mar-13 20:09:30

Their first child is Lyra. Glad to hear you all like it, my 1 year old DD is also a Margot, I love it smile

KB02 Thu 07-Mar-13 20:14:08

Love it

everlong Thu 07-Mar-13 20:19:16

Lovely. I imagine a little French girl.

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick Thu 07-Mar-13 20:33:44

I love that makes me think of a little girl in a book...

Love it, was on my girls' list.

I don't like it - all I can think of is the lady from the good life!
At least it is actually a name though and they haven't called her mars bar or something equally ridiculous!

BeeBopDingALing Thu 07-Mar-13 20:55:35

LuluLovesYou Thu 07-Mar-13 20:57:34

Oh cute Lyra and Margot go nicely! I didn't even know she was preggers.

EchoBitch Thu 07-Mar-13 21:01:59

Almost as bad as Morag.

Chubfuddler Thu 07-Mar-13 21:02:11

I love it. Margot Fontaine, Margot Ledbetter.

ClaraBean Thu 07-Mar-13 21:15:00

I love Margot (and Morag!), I see a few of them popping up now, beautiful name. Not so keen on Lyra, but they make a lovely sibset!

MadBraLady Thu 07-Mar-13 21:15:27

Penelope Keith is such a great comic actress to have made that character so appealing. The others all had nice characters to play.

mrsshackleton Thu 07-Mar-13 21:19:35

Horrible name, hugely in vogue with various Sloanes of my acquaintance right now.

EchoBitch Thu 07-Mar-13 21:39:13

Morag's get called Mogie.

Almost as bad as Senga.

Rhubarbgarden Thu 07-Mar-13 22:07:47

Love it. Was on my shortlist.

mummanj Thu 07-Mar-13 22:08:40

I think Margot may think her sister has the better name. Not to my taste. But lovely couple. Congrats to them.

bootsycollins Fri 08-Mar-13 01:03:41

Love it, I've just read Gone Girl which has a character called Go, was quite far into the book when I discovered her full name was Margot, it had been really bugging me (thicko emoticon).

SaggyOldClothCatpuss Fri 08-Mar-13 01:35:46

Isn't it short for Margaret?

Maebe Fri 08-Mar-13 10:37:25

Suprisingly, it's lovely. I always expect celebrities to call their children stupid names but Margot is gorgeous. And I love Lyra too.

DessieLou Fri 08-Mar-13 22:43:28

ooooh, nice! Lyra & Margot sounds great. :-)

LynetteScavo Fri 08-Mar-13 22:51:29

I like Margot better than Lyra.

Weirdly I would spell Margot Margo, because it's more like Mango than Magot. Told you it was weird.

Gomez Fri 08-Mar-13 22:52:38

Hideous. Trying too hard.

noddyholder Fri 08-Mar-13 22:54:32

BabyRoger Fri 08-Mar-13 22:55:41

Oh I really don't like it. I don't think Margot is a nice sounding name at all. It's almost as bad as Ethel.

OkayHazel Fri 08-Mar-13 23:45:31

Love it! And I like Morag too :D

It's a lovely name.

anonymosity Fri 08-Mar-13 23:47:47

Lovely. And not overly-over done.

MummyPig24 Sat 09-Mar-13 20:44:09

Love Lyra, hate Margot!

mayanna123 Sun 10-Mar-13 07:33:23

Margot pronounced the French way (mar-go) or the German way (mar-got)? Not sure I like either that much.

mewkins Sun 10-Mar-13 21:59:24

Yy the Good Life. Also when I hear it in my head it's said with Lloyd Grosman's accent...

SanityClause Sun 10-Mar-13 22:00:39

I have a good friend called Margot. It's a lovely name.

jkklpu Sun 10-Mar-13 22:39:07

I like it but prefer Margaux spelling

SaggyOldClothCatpuss Sun 10-Mar-13 23:06:30

Surely Margaux is a plural? Like gateaux?

WinkyWankyWonkyPeppa Sun 10-Mar-13 23:15:43

I agree with LouisianaBlue Simples grin

toobreathless Tue 12-Mar-13 00:14:37

LOVE it & would use it myself but you would be hard pushed to find a name that sounds worse with our surname which starts with an M and is pretty close to Mason!

Sasparillo Tue 12-Mar-13 23:35:19

No, I really dislike the name Margot! Lyra isnt much better, but I agree with pp, at Least it's not Apple or Satsuma! Lol, each to their own, I'm sure she will grow up to suit her name perfectly x

Bibs123 Mon 18-Mar-13 21:11:42

I am amazed at how many hideous names are popular on mumsnet.

aquashiv Mon 18-Mar-13 22:06:13

Sounds rather bleugh but am sure as its their baby and the baby will be lovely it will become lovely like all names do.

Mollydoggerson Mon 18-Mar-13 22:11:53

arabesque Mon 15-Apr-13 13:25:46

Only just realised they've had a second child, called Margot, and thought 'I bet there's a thread about it on MN'.

I think it's a lovely name - pretty and retro but a change from all the Sophies, Evies and Rubys currently floating around. It reminds me of childhood books and, of course, the beautiful Margot Fonteyn.

I agree it's also nice when a celeb doesn't turn themselves inside out to find some unusual, never been used before, really stupid name to land their child with.

Still18atheart Mon 15-Apr-13 19:35:17

I like it

Although reckon she could have been conceived whilst watching the Good Life

Still18atheart Mon 15-Apr-13 19:35:47

Lyra on the other hand sounds too much like lycra

MummyBurrows Mon 15-Apr-13 23:30:43

I agree with Bibs123...

I think Margot is awful. Lyra not much better either but I've lost pretty much all faith in celebs giving their offspring a reletively normal, pretty name...the "old/classic" names are coming back into "fashion" and circulation but I think some are better off as middle names rather than first names...don't get me wrong, some of the newer, mordern names aren't much better, worse infact in some cases, especially celebs kids names choices, like Apple,Sparrow and Buddy Bear for example!

thermalsinapril Mon 15-Apr-13 23:46:24

outtolunchagain Mon 15-Apr-13 23:58:39

Love it ,I think it's a beautiful name

nooka Tue 16-Apr-13 03:46:13

I think it's very nice, classic without being too try hard.

For those being very blunt you might want to note that the OP's dd is also called Margot and perhaps be slightly gentler.

3boysgirlontheway Tue 16-Apr-13 07:01:28

Not a name I would choose, but, it's okay.

MummyBurrows Tue 16-Apr-13 14:10:10

Nobody wants to cause offence to anyone who has a certain name or called their DC a certain name but if we all argeed and thought/said every name under the sun that ever gets suggested or mentioned was lovely and nice then the world would be a very boring place smile Plus name choices are very much an "each to their own" thing in reality. I know I wouldn't call my child half the names I've had suggested to me on my thread but then there's people that would never call their child the name(s) I've come out with either lol. There will always be people that will love a name and others that will hate it. Its just a case of varying personal taste and I'm sure the OP didn't expect everyone to say what a lovely name it is just because its a name they chose for their child but she,and obviously sophie dahl and jamie cullum, love the name and that's all that really matters, not the opinions of a bunch of strangers on a forum smile xx

LilyBolero Tue 16-Apr-13 14:10:35

Love it!

LilyBolero Tue 16-Apr-13 14:11:32

Apart from the Good Life (which I loved anyway), it makes me think of Margot Frank, Anne Frank's older sister.

elQuintoConyo Tue 16-Apr-13 14:15:37

I can just hear a very dismissive "Jerry!"said in a cutlglass accent.

It's a name that always makes me smile, so for that reason: fabulous, imvho grin

mawbroon Tue 16-Apr-13 14:25:23

I'm so behind!! I had no idea they were a couple!

rowtunda Tue 16-Apr-13 19:44:53

Love it - would be on my list but unfortunately it is the name of my hairdressers dog!

shesariver Tue 16-Apr-13 22:56:15

Sorry I will have to go against the grain here but I think its awful.

frutilla Wed 17-Apr-13 02:13:14

Sounds nice, but written it reminds me of maggot.

DandyDan Wed 17-Apr-13 21:57:20

First thought - lovely name
Second thought - Margot Frank, Anne's sister.
Third thought - Margot Fonteyn

Definitely didn't think "Margo Leadbetter" - that is a slightly different name anyway.
