Tabitha - Do not mind cat associations, like nicknames Tabbi, Tab/s, Tabster etc.

Matilda - lovely but do not like nicknames Matty or Tilly.

...Was just wondering on others opinions, which would you go for?

BabyRoger Tue 05-Mar-13 21:54:40

I prefer Tabitha.

Thanks guys!

Tabitha would be a serious contender if I had another girlsmile

TenthMuse Tue 05-Mar-13 22:08:37

Definitely Tabitha - love it.

I'd go for Mathilda, but Tabitha is a beautiful name. Tabi is sweet. I know two Tabithas and they are both lovely. I also know a Mathilda and she's lovely too.

I like Matilda best.

Gimmeechocolate Tue 05-Mar-13 22:23:46

I'd go for Matilda. I know one that is shortened to Dilly and another shortened to Tilda.

SingingSands Tue 05-Mar-13 22:32:28

I know sisters called Matilda and Tabitha! Both lovely names, hard to choose between them, but my personal fav is Tabitha smile

IJustWoreMyTrenchcoat Tue 05-Mar-13 23:36:43

I love Mattie as a nickname for Matilda, but prefer Tabitha as a name. Matilda is lovely, but Tabitha sounds a bit fresher to my ears.

Matilda! I always wanted to be the girl from the books

Frettchen Tue 05-Mar-13 23:56:56

I love both names. Tabitha is my absolute favourite, with Tibby as a nn, and if for any reason I was put off Tabitha then Matilda would be my second choice.

Startail Wed 06-Mar-13 00:03:22

Matilda, I can't get past the vision of either a tabby cat or a rath posh, but totally air headed teen.

Startail Wed 06-Mar-13 00:04:03

Rather, stupid touch screens.

ripsishere Wed 06-Mar-13 00:09:20

Matilda by a million miles. HTH.

Tabitha because Matilda is mine if I have another dd

BeeBopDingALing Wed 06-Mar-13 00:52:33

Both are really nice.

MoonHare Thu 07-Mar-13 17:35:52

Ooooh we had exactly this dilema and chose Tabitha. I think it's less of mouthful and passed the playground test in that respect, it's also less common. So glad we went with it, she's 2 now and suits it completely.

mummabug Thu 07-Mar-13 19:54:34

thanks so much guys for your help...must admit I am veering toward Tabitha! Thanks MoonHare lovely to hear from you having had exact same conundrum!!

Coconutty Thu 07-Mar-13 19:55:59

Dislike Tabby as a NN though quite like Dilly so would go for Matilda.

mummabug Thu 07-Mar-13 19:56:23

I like cats...don't mind the connotation at all.

But when it comes to something like 'Jemima' I immediately think 'Puddleduck' and would never use it! Love the name Felix as well...perhaps I am duck prejudiced ha ha!

mummabug Thu 07-Mar-13 19:58:47

I wasn't aware of Dilly as a nn for Matilda (sounds like a nn for a dildo...eek!)

I like nicknames Tabs, Tabster, Tibby and don't mind Tabbi....whereas can't get to grips with any Matilda nicknames. Matt/Matti/Tilly/Tilda..I like Tilda but it seems more just like a name than an easy-flowing nickname iyswim?

MoonHare Thu 07-Mar-13 20:36:36

Tabitha rocks! You won't regret it.

CharlieBoo Thu 07-Mar-13 21:17:27

Much prefer Matilda.

mummabug Fri 08-Mar-13 23:13:33

Thanks everyone for your help xxx

anonymosity Fri 08-Mar-13 23:46:43

I like Tabitha best as I've encountered many many Matildas since my DC were born and no Tabithas at all.

mummabug Fri 08-Mar-13 23:53:57

Being less popular is always a massive bonus, I was a bit worried as Matilda seems to be rising up the top 100 every year....thanks anon x

thezebrawearspurple Sat 09-Mar-13 01:15:58

Matilda is a lovely name, it's recent popularity a bit of a turn off, still lovely though. Tabitha is beautifulsmile

PearlyWhites Sat 09-Mar-13 01:27:08

I have a Matilda, we call her tilda like the rice grin

mummabug Sat 09-Mar-13 02:31:05

Tilda is definitely the nicest nn for Matilda (imo) smile

OkayHazel Sat 09-Mar-13 16:12:44

Agreed Mummabug. Tilda Swinton is a glorious namesake too!

williaminajetfighter Sat 09-Mar-13 23:01:28

Wow OP those were our top two names when i had DD 6 years ago. In the end we went for Matilda but primarily call her Tilda or Tildy. Never Tilly.

Tabitha is fab but I come from a family with lisps and the 'bith' would have caused a lifetime of lisps!

Glad I did go with Matilda in the end. I think it's strong and Teutonic and as others have said love the namesake re Tilda Swinton. Matilda v popular at the moment but I think it ages well.

squoosh Sat 09-Mar-13 23:43:53

Tabitha by a million miles.

Still18atheart Sun 10-Mar-13 00:15:16

Matilida, loved the roald dahl story

hate tabitha, there was a girl at my school called that and she was horrid so i don't like the connatations the name has to me

Skygirls Sun 10-Mar-13 00:22:32

Love Tabitha. Beautiful and unusual. No others would have the same name in the classroom. There are 3 Matilda's in my DS class at school, but no Tabithas.
Both are nice names though.

mummabug Sun 10-Mar-13 09:23:02

Oooh williaminajetfighter I do like the nn Tildy for Matilda.

Still18atheart, I well know the feeling of some pleb ruining a name for you forever! And yes, love Tilda Swinton smile

Thanks everyone am defo swaying even more after your help! x

zingally Sun 10-Mar-13 17:49:03
