Florence, Maude, Mabel or Iris?

Ok, I have been back and forth on names for girls. This is my latest list. Not endorsed by DH although he has agreed that Florence and Mabel can be on the list. DS is George so I want it to have the same old-fashioned feel as George.

I know old-fashioned, granny names are not to everyone's taste but it is definitely my taste, so I would be grateful for your views on the names above. None are popular where I live. Maude and Mabel would raise eyebrows I suspect but this doesn't bother me in the slightest. Surname starts with "S" and so I think Iris might be tricky and Florence may also not flow as well. If I had my way, I would go with Maude but DH is currently saying no to this one although I am working on him.

Thanks!

Florence is lovely. That is favourite from your list. Mabel seems to be getting popular at the moment. Iris and Maude still rare. Personally I prefer Iris to Maude.

Bluestocking Wed 27-Feb-13 07:40:29

I like Mabel best from your list.

nicelyneurotic Wed 27-Feb-13 08:00:05

Iris and Mabel are the nicest

flossy101 Wed 27-Feb-13 08:01:01

Iris
Florence
Mabel
Maude

In that order!

TobyLerone Wed 27-Feb-13 08:03:28

I love them all. They were all on my lists for a baby girl 12 years ago and I was vetoed. DD got Iris as a middle name instead.

cashmere Wed 27-Feb-13 08:04:58

I know an Iris, Florence and Mabel and have a relative called Maud!

I like them all but in this order:-
Iris
Florence
Mabel
Maude

Have you considered Betsy, Olive, Agatha, Etta and Violet too? (know of all these)

emmyloo2 Wed 27-Feb-13 08:06:31

Thanks everyone. TobyLerone, Maude and Iris are currently getting vetoed. Mabel is a "maybe". The only one DH likes is Florence. Men - they have such poor taste don't they??

I am currently wheeling out the "I have to be pregnant for 9 months and give birth" excuse to justify why I should get the deciding vote.

emmyloo2 Wed 27-Feb-13 08:10:37

Cashmere - have considered Elizabeth (with nn Betsy). Olive was rejected by DH. I like Violet but it's a bit popular where we are from and it doesn't go with our surname very well.

Is Etta a nickname for something? I like that.

BeeBawBabbity Wed 27-Feb-13 08:13:41

Oh I love Maude(e), but it was also vetoed here sad.

Umlauf Wed 27-Feb-13 09:00:06

DH loves Florence, I'm not so keen. I love love love Iris. I was at school with a beautiful Maude but she changed her name when she went to uni as she hated it so much :-( Mabel is nice too but not my favourite.

ceramicunicorn Wed 27-Feb-13 09:11:53

My favourite is Maude too.

How about Winifred, Ursula, Flora, Ethel

telsa Wed 27-Feb-13 09:19:30

Mabel is lovely. Etta gets used as a name on its own, but could be a nn for Henrietta, Georgette, Marietta, Claudette, Rosetta, Violetta, Loretta.
Betsy is really lovely.

hatsybatsy Wed 27-Feb-13 09:22:49

friend has an etta who is just etta - think it does stand up quite well in its own right?

love all your names by the way.. am wondering whether hattie (harriet), connie (constance) and annabel might suit you?

hatsybatsy Wed 27-Feb-13 09:23:08

or clara - i love clara!!

WormCanner Wed 27-Feb-13 20:47:49

Mabel, no contest.

DickdastardlyAndMutley Wed 27-Feb-13 20:49:29

Mabel, Iris and Florence in that order!

nectarini1983 Wed 27-Feb-13 20:51:30

None... !!!!!are you having a baby or a pensioner! !!!!!?????

emmyloo2 Wed 27-Feb-13 22:27:52

Nectarin - it's true, I am giving birth to an 80 year old woman!! grin

nectarini1983 Wed 27-Feb-13 22:32:56

He he ;-).

ChompieMum Wed 27-Feb-13 22:37:44

Mabel. Florence is getting very popular

Squeakygate Wed 27-Feb-13 22:47:50

I love Iris. What about Patience?

ENormaSnob Wed 27-Feb-13 22:56:30

Iris, Florence nn florrie and Clara are all on my girls list for dc4.

echidnakid Wed 27-Feb-13 23:08:51

Mabel is the best IMHO. I really like Florence and Iris but not sure of the flow with an S surname. Maude is okay but it's not a name I instantly connect with.

echidnakid Wed 27-Feb-13 23:10:13

Martha is lovely too.

AgnesBligg Wed 27-Feb-13 23:18:49

Lovely names. I think Maude is beautiful.

birdofthenorth Wed 27-Feb-13 23:21:45

Brilliant list! Love Mabel, Maude & Iris, in that order. Less keen on Florence which always seems a little cooler to me. DD is Bess and had this one been a girl would probably have been Audrey, if that's up the same street. Friends have Edith, Ada, Cora and Elsie, on a similar vein.

bridgetsmum Wed 27-Feb-13 23:23:22

I love Florence, but probably cos we went there on honeymoon and its so beautifulsmile
I also quite like Maude

Gimmeechocolate Wed 27-Feb-13 23:31:19

I have an Iris and Mabel is our current favourite for DD3 so LOVE them! I also really like Florence and Maude but we know three or four Florence's already and DH has also vetoed Maude on the grounds that it sounds too much like mould sad DD2 is Hetty and I also love Ethel, Lilliah, Ada and Violet.

Gimmeechocolate Wed 27-Feb-13 23:32:43

Oh and DD3 ( if indeed it is a girl!) would have been Elsie but my brother got there first so now have a gorgeous niece called Elsie smile

meddie Wed 27-Feb-13 23:38:26

Ultimate old lady name... Fanny

Clary Thu 28-Feb-13 00:40:19

Oooh I always loved Mabel, DH vetoed it tho.

Florence was one of DS2's names if he had been a girl. (his middle names is George!)

I like Maude too tho it's a bit short with some surnames (Maud Smith hmmm)

Iris is more popular and I like it the least of yr list.

Other options: Agnes, Elsie, Edith, Constance, Verity, Cecilia?

LOL @ giving birth to a grandma grin, me too btw, my DD's name features on this thread

forgetmenots Thu 28-Feb-13 20:22:13

Can I suggest Martha? Lots of Marthas shortened to Maud 'back in the day'...

Out of these though I love Iris. Love Violet and Betsy too.

WhiteHairReally Thu 28-Feb-13 21:29:32

Love Maud. The child we didn't have would have been called Maud. Maudie is both sweet and feisty at the same time, and there aren't many around. Good Luck persuading your DH to be a little adventurous in the world of names.

baskingseals Thu 28-Feb-13 21:37:07

my favourite is Maude. always reminds me of the poem.

i prefer Marta to Martha. i don't really like Florence or Mabel. I do like Iris, but it is quite popular, which i don't think matters if you absolutely love the name.

emmyloo2 Thu 28-Feb-13 22:28:33

Thanks all. Love the suggestions of Martha and Audrey. Audrey would be on the top of my list being my grandmother's name except DH has vetoed it. He also said no to Martha. I can't decide whether I prefer Maude or Mabel but think I am going to struggle with getting DH on board with Maude whereas Mabel seems like a possibility. Florence is a definite yes from him but again I have concerns with the surname.

I laughed out aloud at Fanny! I would love someone just to call their daughter Fanny. Now that would take guts!

Baffledandbewildered Thu 28-Feb-13 22:30:20

My mother and grandmother are Florence maud !!!! Not one of each first and middle names

tootsietoo Thu 28-Feb-13 22:43:44

Ah, I have a 6 year old Florence. And then that Cameron man decided to give his baby the name, and Florence turned up with her Machine and they seem to be everywhere.

I loved Ottolie too.

How about being a generation ahead of the curve and going for Janet, Barbara or Beryl?

I like all your names.

DewDr0p Thu 28-Feb-13 22:48:23

I ADORE the name Iris. Please use that one (I have 3 boys so couldn't really get away with it!!)

I do also love Florence but the Cameron/machine thing is a slight downside. I don't know any Iris's but people seem fairly conservative in name choices where I live.

emmyloo2 Fri 01-Mar-13 03:15:10

Dewdrop - I love Iris as well, but our surname starts with an "S". It's a bit like Saneson. So Iris Saneson. Merges a bit I fear.....

Wishfulmakeupping Fri 01-Mar-13 04:21:21

Like Mabel best from list- also like Clara as suggested unthread

sleepywombat Fri 01-Mar-13 04:49:49

I like Maude, although think George & Maude sound a bit odd together (like same 'aw' sound).
I don't like Iris or Mabel, prefer Ivy or Amabel.
Florence a bit common compared to your others.

Also like Etta, Edie, Nancy, Ada, Joanie, Janet.

emmyloo2 Fri 01-Mar-13 05:26:23

Sleepywombat - Ivy was another I considered. I like this a lot. And Nancy is fantastic! I might add that to the lost.

Janet might be a little retro for me....

meggy22 Fri 01-Mar-13 11:36:56

Love florence or mabel, violet is also a favorite of mine

VodkaJelly Fri 01-Mar-13 17:55:49

My gran is called Maude, she was pushing me to call DD Maude - was never going to happen! Just reminds me of pensioners, same with Mabel.

Etta is nice

Blowninonabreeze Fri 01-Mar-13 18:01:59

I love your names.....
Am currently pg with dd3 who will be either Dorothy (Dot/Dotty) or Harriet (hettie/hattie) depending upon who convinces the other first between DH and I.

We both love Florence but can't have it due to our surname. I adore Maude but DH has vetoed it..... Might add Mabel into th mix and gauge reactions.....

Blowninonabreeze Fri 01-Mar-13 18:02:56

What about Nora or Nell (Eleanor)

forgetmenots Fri 01-Mar-13 18:37:01

Love Joan too, really chic

telsa Fri 01-Mar-13 19:07:28

No Iris won't go with an s surname,, but Nancy and Ivy are also grand.

titan Fri 01-Mar-13 19:11:00

All nice. Maude probably my favourite followed by Mabel. I know several babies called Florence - it seems to be getting quite popular.

FriggFRIGGisPoorlySick Fri 01-Mar-13 20:04:43

From my own ridiculously long list...

UnrequitedSkink Fri 01-Mar-13 20:07:52

I love Iris and DS2 would have been one, but for the 'S' surname thing. Maude is lovely too, had you considered Flora rather than Florence? It sounds so nice when you say it.

Also love Elsie.

I have a Florence & a Martha. Florence was nearly a Queenie & Martha was nearly Enid. DH said no to both!

MumOfTheMoos Fri 01-Mar-13 20:28:06

I think Iris is a lovely name!

PixelAteMyFace Fri 01-Mar-13 20:35:06

Another vote here for Clara and Flora.

Sorry, but I think Mabel is dire.

Maude is pretty if you are going to pronounce it the French way.

CheeseStrawWars Fri 01-Mar-13 20:36:47

Maude is too close to maudlin for my tastes.

WormCanner Fri 01-Mar-13 22:35:11

Pixel What, like Depeche Maude?

PixelAteMyFace Sat 02-Mar-13 14:28:02

Yes, more like that.

I`m not keen on Depeche as a first name though grin

SurreyWithAFringeOnTop Sat 02-Mar-13 20:19:37

I have an S surname, and had DS been a DD, I would have used Iris. Don't let that put you off - it is a gorgeous name.

Maude is lovely. Mabel is ok, Florence very overused IMO.

How about Martha? Also gorgeous.

jollygoose Sat 02-Mar-13 20:27:21

really like mabel or florence, not maud it sounds so hard

kaumana Sat 02-Mar-13 20:36:20

Iris would be my choice from your list, but having grown up with "an old lady name" I would think twice before choosing one. I can't count the times I've heard "ooh you don't look like a ......"
